Abstract: Attrition mills and propeller shaft assemblies therefor are described having features for enhanced installation and maintenance. Some embodiments include propellers having enhanced material processing characteristics.
Abstract: One or more twin screw pumps prevent backflow of wetted powder and jamming of powder eductors. A twin screw pump at an exit of a powder eductor produces a vacuum in the eductor to prevent backflow. A twin screw pump in a liquid input line produces a strong liquid stream through the eductor. A viscous or recycled fluid bypasses the eductor or is pumped through the eductor using the twin screw pump in the eductor liquid input line. The twin screw pump at the eductor output reduces the eductor exit pressure and draws a viscous liquid stream from the eductor. The powder-laden stream is directed for processing or recycling.
Abstract: A container for bone cement includes a first member defining a chamber, which contains a first ingredient. The chamber also includes a second member movably coupled to the first member. The second member includes a mixing device that is movably disposed within the first chamber, and the second member defines a second chamber containing a second ingredient. The container additional includes an opening device that selectively opens the second chamber and allows the second ingredient to enter from the second chamber into the first chamber. The mixing device is movable within the first chamber to promote mixing of the first ingredient and the second ingredient to prepare the bone cement. A corresponding method of preparing bone cement is also disclosed.
Abstract: A contact tray for use in a mass transfer or heat exchange column and having a tray deck with an inlet area and a remotely positioned outlet for respectively receiving liquid on the tray deck and then removing the liquid after it has flowed across the tray deck and interacted with another fluid on and above the tray deck. A plurality of barriers are positioned between the inlet area and the outlet. The barriers each have spaced-apart pickets and openings in the spacing between adjacent ones of the pickets. The pickets impede the flow of the liquid and increase the upstream liquid loading on the tray deck as the liquid flows from the inlet area, through the openings, and then into the outlet. At low liquid flow rates, this increase in the liquid loading may significantly increase the vapor handling capacity of the tray.
Abstract: High pressure injection apparatus (2) for addition of a liquid formulation into a melt stream comprises a first pump which is arranged to accurately meter the liquid formulation (including highly loaded formulations comprising solids comprising particles of relatively large size) and a second pump which boosts the pressure of the formulation to that of the melt stream into which it is to be injected. In an embodiment, the apparatus includes a tank (4) for initially receiving liquid formulation. The tank is subjected to ambient temperature and pressure and need not be stirred or otherwise agitated. The tank is arranged to deliver the formulation via pipe (6) into a first pump (8) (which may be a diaphragm pump or a progressing cavity pump). The pump is arranged to work at a pressure up to 120 bar to boost pressure. Downstream of pump (8), a pipe (10) is arranged to deliver formulation from the pump (8) to a gear pump (12), driven by a motor (13). The gear pump acts to meter the liquid formulation.
