Patent number: 4289268Abstract: A foldable carton having side walls and end walls hingedly connected together along their side edges, and a bottom panel hingedly connected to the lower edge of each wall. The bottom panels of two adjacent side and end walls are hingedly connected together and the bottom panels of the other two adjacent side and end walls are also hingedly connected together. The bottom panels move from a location between the side and end walls, when the carton is collapsed, to a location perpendicular to the side and end walls when the carton is erected. One of the bottom panels is larger than the others, and overlies and is supported by the other bottom panels when the carton is in erect condition. The larger panel has a hinge line along which it bends during its movement when the carton is folded and unfolded between its collapsed and erect conditions. The hinge line of the larger panel extends at an acute angle to the hinge between the larger bottom panel and its respective carton wall.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1980Date of Patent: September 15, 1981Assignee: The Paige Company Containers, Inc.Inventor: Richard E. Patent number: 4289267Abstract: An eight-sided foldable container having a bottom of the glued-automatic variety is disclosed. The container is constructed from a single sheet of foldable material which comprises eight side panels, a plurality of which are provided with bottom panels which extend angularly downwardly from the side panels via fold lines. These bottom panels are folded inwardly at their respective fold lines toward the center of the formed container such that two pairs are bonded together so as to enable the remaining bottom panels to interlock with and be supported by said bonded bottom panels, thereby forming a container bottom capable of supporting substantial weight, as well as being folded to a relatively flat condition. The blanks used for the construction of the container are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1980Date of Patent: September 15, 1981Assignee: Arkay Packaging CorporationInventor: Larry Mayea

Patent number: 4289266Abstract: A carrier for one or more stackable articles formed from a paperboard blank of generally rectangular configuration. The blank is folded about a score line intermediate its short ends so that adjacent regions are divergent at an angle. A pair of aligned slots in each adjacent region serve as a hand-hold. The blank further has confronting side panels extending downwardly from the adjacent, divergent regions, and panel portions cut from the side panels are folded toward one another along score lines adjacent free ends of the blank in formation of openings in the side panels, and are fastened to one another in provision of a bottom for the carrier. An article may be carried singly, or several stacked upon one another while supported on the bottom and projecting through, and retained within blank portions that define, the side-panel openings.Type: GrantFiled: December 19, 1979Date of Patent: September 15, 1981Assignee: American Can CompanyInventor: Raymond V. Patent number: 4284228Abstract: A packing container e.g. for sterile milk is manufactured from laminated material which is folded and sealed to the desired container shape. In the seal, cut surfaces facing towards the inside will occur which have to be sealed so as to prevent the central paper layer of the material from absorbing some of the contents. Usually this is done by means of a strip of a plastic material which is impermeable to liquid. When the packing material is sterilized and exposed to high temperatures these strips are often damaged, because the moisture present in the paper layer of the laminate is converted into vapor and penetrates the strip softened by the heat. In accordance with the invention the seal is now ventilated with the help of ducts extending through the seal in such a manner that the vapor can escape to the surrounding air without affecting the sealing strip which thus remains intact and can fulfil its intended sealing function.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1979Date of Patent: August 18, 1981Assignee: Tetra Pak International ABInventor: Renato Cetrelli

Patent number: 4281787Abstract: A coated paperboard container and a blank for constructing same are disclosed as including a body portion having a side seam flap secured adjacent the edge portion of one of four side panels and an upper end that is closed by a folded top end closure which includes closure panels having a construction that enhances foldability and sealing. Front and back triangular gable panels of the top end closure are each flanked by a pair of triangular fold-back panels that have different sizes than each other so as to facilitate folding of the sealed top end closure from a vertical position in a direction toward the smaller of the fold-back panels. The lower score line portions adjacent the smaller inner roof panel are formed wider than the other score lines so as to further enhance the folding of the top sealed panels in the direction of the gable side bearing the side seam flap upper extension.Type: GrantFiled: October 17, 1979Date of Patent: August 4, 1981Assignee: Ex-Cell-O CorporationInventor: Warren R.
