Patent number: 5050363Abstract: An architectural rail system usable in doors, windows, and building walls for supporting and framing panels. Hollow aluminum rails are formed with internal ribs that form tracks for the slidable reception of ballistic steel strips or panels. The rails are thus structurally and ballistically reinforced against penetration by small caliber projectiles fired from rifles and/or pistols. The rail panel-framing system is useful where security against armed attack is a consideration, e.g. in banks, cashier stations at movie theatres, area ticket windows, fast food restaurants, etc.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1990Date of Patent: September 24, 1991Inventor: James P. Patent number: 4989382Abstract: A connector assembly is described for concrete structural elements, such as concrete crypt modules for mausoleum structures. The connector assembly includes a top corner member connectable to a concrete structural element with a horizontal top plate extending along the top of the structural element and a vertical edge plate extending down one side of the structural element. The vertical edge plate has an inwardly stepped portion extending downwardly from the top of the structural element and terminating in a horizontal shelf portion and the horizontal top plate has a recess adapted to extend into the concrete. One edge of the recess and the top end of the vertical edge plate have opposed interlock projections. The assembly also includes an interlock plate means having projections for engaging the opposed interlock projections and one edge of the plate means has a downwardly projecting flange terminating above the corner member shelf portion.Type: GrantFiled: November 27, 1989Date of Patent: February 5, 1991Inventor: John R. Patent number: 4987707Abstract: The vaulted building structure comprises a shell (1) made of a composite construction material and formed of arcuate elements (4) of a uniform width having their ends (5) mounted on a base (3). The shell (1) is shaped as a cylindrical vault of which the vertical axis of symmetry includes a vault ridge (2). The ends (5) of the arcuate elements (4) are hingedly braced to the base (3) for rotation about a horizontal axis parallel with the vertical plane of symmetry. The convex outer surface of each arcuate element (4) has its curvature gradually diminishing lengthwise of the arcuate element (4) towards its ends (5) and ridge (2) for levelling out strains generated in the shell (1) upon rotation of the ends (5) of the arcuate elements (4).Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 1989Date of Patent: January 29, 1991Inventors: Vasily P. Kiselev, Nikolai P. Klimenko, Alexandr A. Zakharov

Patent number: 4987708Abstract: The invention is for an anchor for securely mounting an article of furniture to a support surface. The anchor comprises a shank having a head at one end thereof and abutment means longitudinally spaced away from the head, and a mechanical fastener that is movably secured to the shank between the head and the abutment means. The anchor further comprises means for attaching the article of furniture to the shank, said means being adapted to be mounted to the article of furniture and having an opening received over the head of the shank. The anchor also comprises means positioned between the article attaching means and the head of the shank for selectively retaining the article attaching means on the shank. The mechanical fastener is adjusted to bear against the article attaching means to securely mount the article of furniture to the support surface.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 1989Date of Patent: January 29, 1991Assignee: Herman Miller, Inc.Inventor: Jeffrey S. Patent number: 4958961Abstract: A rod-shaped tension member formed of fiber reinforced composite material is utilized as an anchoring rod in foundation and mining construction, or as a reinforcing member in concrete and prestressed concrete construction. At least, in an axially extending region where it is to receive an anchoring member, such as a rod, the tension member has a continuous helical thread formed of alternating ribs and recesses. The anchoring member has a corresponding thread so that it can be screwed onto the tension member thread. An intermediate layer is provided between the threaded regions of the tension member and the anchoring nut, and is formed of a material affording large plastic deformation relative to the tension member when slight stress increases occur at overload conditions.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1989Date of Patent: September 25, 1990Assignee: Dyckerhoff & Widmann AktiengesellschaftInventors: Thomas Herbst, Dieter Jungwirth

Patent number: 4932169Abstract: An inflatable structure comprises a double wall pneumatic envelope including top and bottom panels. The inflatable structure also includes a central mast and a series of peripheral poles. A central portion of the bottom panel is mounted to a top end of the mast, whereas the bottom end of the mast is secured to the ground. The poles are connected at their upper and lower ends respectively to peripheral portions of the envelope and to the ground. An unrestrained lens-shaped double wall envelope submitted therein with pneumatic pressure tends normally to undergo a reduction of its perimeter while its vertical thickens so as to adopt a sphere shape. Mere pneumatic pressure provided in the envelope thus causes the double wall envelope to inflate, the top panel being supported by the pneumatic pressure in an inflated position, whereas the peripheral portions of the envelope are supported, spaced apart from the ground, by the pneumatic pressure and by the poles.Type: GrantFiled: November 1, 1989Date of Patent: June 12, 1990Inventor: Robert Charbonneau
