  • Patent number: 9992314
Abstract: Techniques are described for automatic device mode switching. In an implementation an electronic device provides a variety of functionality through multiple modes of the electronic device. The electronic device may be configured to toggle between modes when inserted into or removed from a corresponding mounting device. In an implementation, one operational mode may be automatically activated upon insertion of the electronic device into the mounting device. Another operational mode may be automatically activated when the electronic device is removed from the mounting device. In another implementation, multiple modes of an electronic device may be associated with multiple orientations of the device. An orientation detector may provide signals indicative of orientation, which when detected causes automatic activation of an associated operational mode.

  • Patent number: 8929858
Abstract: A banded billing system for telecommunication service is disclosed. A carrier's billing system maintains in data storage a banded-pricing schedule that divides a continuum of minutes of use into a series of contiguous, mutually-exclusive minute-ranges and that specifies for each minutes-range a respective cost. At the end of a billing period, the billing system determines a number of minutes of telecommunication service used by a given subscriber during the billing period. The billing system then queries the banded-pricing schedule to determine which minute-range the number of minutes falls into, and to determine the cost specified by the banded-pricing schedule for that minute-range. The billing system then bills the determined cost to the subscriber, for use of the telecommunication service in the billing period.

  • Patent number: 8914081
Abstract: Consideration of Quality of Service is taken into account during the establishment of a sleep cycle in a mobile station providing real-time services. Upon the mobile station's identification of a need for a real-time service to enter into sleep mode, a request conveying that need is sent to the base station. The base station replies with a start frame number and other sleep parameters. Thereafter the mobile station enters sleep mode comprising sleep intervals interleaved with listening intervals. To prevent transmission packets from being buffered at the mobile station for an excessive period of time due to attempts to transmit packets to the base station during a sleep interval, the length of the sleep interval is set so as not to exceed the maximum latency value reflecting the QoS of the real-time service negotiated during establishment of the real-time services.

  • Patent number: 8874091
Abstract: An improved approach to mobile device capability management is described herein where a capability management device is provided at a mobile communication network. Upon change of a mobile device capability, a related notification is sent to the capability management device which applies a policy decision whether to track the capability change at the network side or not. Should the decision be ‘yes’, the capability management device starts a device management session to collect further information on a mobile device capability change beyond the information made available with the mobile device capability change notification. After retrieval of the mobile device capability change information, the capability management device will update its mobile device capability state accordingly.

  • Patent number: 8843136
Abstract: In a mobile communications network, drifts in timing of user equipment in soft handover may be accounted for by measuring the offset between the current timing of the user equipment and the first significant path of downlink frames from cells of the active set at first and second instances. Differences in the respective offsets from the first and second instances may be calculated to determine if the drift is unidirectional in time for all cells of the active set. A unidirectional drift in the offsets is indicative of a drift in timing of the user equipment, allowing the current timing to be momentarily unfrozen and updated.

  • Patent number: 8831675
Abstract: A mobile communication device (102) contains both a WAN modem (122) and a PAN modem (134) which operate on interfering radio frequencies. To mitigate interference, and still permit real-time communication operation, the PAN is prevented from transmitting while the WAN is receiving (714). The PAN carries the real-time data via an active link (144) between the PAN modem and a remote device (142). The active link uses a retransmission protocol, which allows recovery of suppressed packets within a given period. The PAN modem is disabled for periods shorter than a maximum time which guarantees success transmission or retransmission of the PAN data. To further aid successful operation of the PAN retransmission operation, the WAN base station aggregates data into a single downlink burst.

  • Patent number: 8750183
Abstract: A mobile device-to-HTTP protocol gateway (MHG) which translates between Wireless Mobile Originated commands from an SMSC, and an application server on the Internet. A wireless Internet gateway establishes communications with one or more relevant SMSCs using standard format SMPP commands, and the MHG utilizes HTTP protocol POST messages to post short messages originated at the mobile device to a particular URL. Return results are received by the MHG via HTTP protocol messages, translated to SMPP messages, and forwarded back to the SMSC for delivery to the mobile device. The wireless Internet Gateway communicates with the MHG using RMI protocol commands. An MHG in the present invention enables a developer to create mobile applications using standard web development tools. The MHG allows standard format command messages to be used throughout the pathway between a mobile device and an application program on a web IP server at a particular URL.

  • Patent number: 8718691
Abstract: Systems and methods for assigning short codes to provide uniformity among wireless carriers. In the systems and methods, a Universal Short Code (USC) Administrator maintains a list of short codes and their lease status so that SMS messages sent to a particular short code may be routed to the proper holder of the short code. A network facilitator is in communication with both the USC Administrator and at least one wireless carrier to route the SMS message to the proper holder of the short code. The short code may be leased for a specified period of time so that the short code can be reassigned after expiration of the lease.

  • Patent number: 8712405
Abstract: A method for providing a neighborhood or local cordless service comprises the steps of receiving subscriber neighborhood zone selection input so that a mobile telephone equipped subscriber may place or receive calls for a fixed rate, for example, per month without having to pay radio frequency air time charges any time they are located within their selected subscribed-to zones. If the subscribed-to zones are adjacent to one another and the mobile subscriber roams from one zone to another, the subscriber may continue their free call uninterrupted and without paying air time charges.

  • Patent number: 8700042
Abstract: Successfully decoded data received from a mobile terminal as well as the transmission format of that data is relayed over the backhaul from a base station receiver that successfully decoded the mobile terminal's transmission to the base stations in the mobile terminal's active set that presumably were unable to decode the mobile terminal's transmission due to inadequate signal-to-noise ratio. A base station that receives this transmission from the relaying base station that did'successfully decode and demodulate the mobile terminal's transmission is then able to reconstruct the data and subtract it from the total interference, thereby increasing the signal-to-noise ratio at this base station for its in-cell processing.

  • Patent number: 8670745
Abstract: The signaling interface between a wireless network message center and a prepaid control platform is enhanced by addition of one or more parameters useful in supporting special accounting treatments for user message communications through a wireless network, for example, a ConnectedAddressList, an ExceptionIndicator and/or a PolicyOverrideIndicator. The ConnectedAddressList and PolicyOverrideIndicator can be used to allow a prepaid wireless service provider to offer a wide variety of free or specially priced messaging buckets to its subscribers (or to a select group of its subscribers). User messages may be delivered for free, for example, if they are going to or coming from other customers of the service provider. The ExceptionIndicator can be used to block application of such buckets, e.g. to enable premium pricing, for international delivery or the like.
