  • Patent number: 4387564
Abstract: There is disclosed an improved upper-stage rocket motor/engine assembly of the type which comprises in combination with the basic rocket engine/motor and rigid or fixed nozzle thereof one or more telescoping nestible-extendible truncated cone-shaped collars of rigid structural form, and a further deployable perimetrically attached skirt formed of sheet metal or the like which is pleat-folded inwardly from an initial truncated cone-shaped configuration into a generally planar configuration. The assembly when inoperative is stowed within the basic engine/motor and nozzle profile; but in association with engine/motor firing the extendible components thereof are progressively deployed in accord with an improved technique to provide the desired extended length and plume exiting diameter/area nozzle effect.

  • Patent number: 4354347
Abstract: This disclosure is directed toward combined cycle power plants which include at least one gas turbine and one steam turbine thermally coupled through a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). Exhaust gas from the gas turbine is used to heat feedwater into steam for the steam turbine. One optimum criterion is to design the HRSG so that the exit temperature of the exhaust gas is at a minimum without the occurrence of sulfur condensation on the economizer tube bundles. The allowable minimum temperature varies with the sulfur content of the fuel and, hence, it would be desirable to be able to adjust the tube surface temperature as necessary in accordance with the sulfur content of the gas turbine fuel.

  • Patent number: 4347893
Abstract: An oil heated motorcycle handlebar construction is enclosed utilizing an oil line extending from the engine or oil pump of the motorcycle engine to carry the warm oil to a sealed conduit defined along the interior of the handlebars. The intake line extends from the point of entry into the handlebars to the outermost end of one handle. An exit line is included extending from the outermost end of the opposite handle to carry the oil from the handlebar interior back to the oil tank of the conventional motorcycle engine. The intake line and the oil line include an intermediate aperture in order to minimize the heating of the portions of the handlebars adjacent to the gripping sections during operation of the motorcycle during the warmer months. Access to the interior of the oil chamber defined within the handlebars is provided by removable stoppers in the outer ends of each of the arms of the handlebar.

  • Patent number: 4334833
Abstract: A four-stage gas compressor including: a double-acting piston operable by pressurized oil and provided with first and second hollow opposed piston rods the first of which is connected to a first-stage piston and the second of which is connected to a second-stage piston; said first and second-stage pistons being arranged to slide in first and second jackets respectively and being a sliding fit upon first and second cylindrical bodies respectively; said first and second cylindrical bodies respectively being fixed to first and second opposed heads; a first axial suction and delivery duct leading to an end face of said first cylindrical body, a third stage chamber being defined between said end face and one face of the double-acting piston; and a second axial suction and delivery duct leading to an end face of said second cylindrical body, a fourth stage chamber being defined between said end face of said second cylindrical body and the other face of the double-acting piston.

  • Patent number: 4325679
Abstract: A hermetic refrigeration compressor has a two-stage oil pump in the vertically aligned crankshaft that is journaled in a combination thrust and radial bearing at the bottom of the crankshaft. The oil passes upward through an axial passage in the crankshaft and then outward through a radial passage which comprises the first stage of the pump. The oil then passes through a wide and shallow groove around most of the periphery of the crankshaft and is then returned through a second radial passage to another vertical passage offset from the axis of the crankshaft to move the oil upward to lubricate the various moving parts of the compressor.
