  • Patent number: 4073425
Abstract: A double-contact rivet is formed from wire portions cut from wire supplies. The wire portions are aligned so that outer portions of electric contact material are located on either side of a central portion of support material, and the two outer portions are cold-welded to the central portion. One end of the body so formed is punched to provide a contact head while the bead formed by the cold-welding at the other end is pressed to a substantially flat ring form and hardened by rapid cooling. The hardened ring bead is cleanly cut from the remainder of the rivet.

  • Patent number: 4073428
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for soldering abutting ends of links of chains of precious metals. The soldering is accomplished by applying solder to the abutting ends, continuously feeding the chain onto a rotating surface such as a rotating table, heating the chain to melt the solder, and removing the chain from the table. The chain is fed at a slightly higher rate than the rational speed of the table to cause the links to be pushed into each other to avoid tensions from developing in said links during the heating step.

  • Patent number: 4073424
Abstract: An apparatus for automatically positioning a wire bonding machine at a second bond position is provided with a plurality of individually adjustable second bond positioning devices set at second bond positions and cooperable with second bond positioning actuating means. After positioning a semiconductor at a first bond position and completing a first bond, the second bond actuating means cooperating with a second bond positioning device automatically moves the semiconductor to a second bond position. After completing the second bond, the second bond positioning actuating means is released permitting the semiconductor to return to a first bond position as another second bond positioning device is cycled into active position.

  • Patent number: 4071183
Abstract: A fabricated article, including a portion of non-uniform sectional thickness, is provided through an improved method employing a plurality of cooperating, particularly shaped and sized sheet metal members or member portions which, in an article including a cavity, generally define selected inner and outer surfaces of the article. Also employed is at least one particularly shaped and sized insert member to provide increased sectional thickness in a selected portion. The sheet metal members or member portions and the insert member are assembled at bonding surfaces so that the sheet metal members or member portions retain the insert between them. Thereafter, the assembly is fabricated into the article by solid state diffusion bonding at the bonding surfaces.

  • Patent number: 4069961
Abstract: A contacting head for making a wire connection, particularly an aluminum or gold wire connection on an integrated circuit by ultrasonic or thermocompression bonding, in which a contacting arm is provided with a concave contacting tool or a capillary, and supplies ultrasonic or heat energy. The concave contacting tool has a gripper, or the capillary has a wire clamping device for effecting a feed or clamping of the wire during movement of the contacting arm. A driving unit provides for threading the wire through a wire guiding device which is entirely enclosed, and through the concave contacting tool or the capillary. The driving unit also provides for controlling the wire tension and produces a gas stream in the enclosed wire guiding device. A magnetic arrangement with a permanent magnet and a non-ferrous core provides for electrodynamic contact pressure control of the contacting arm and for control of the gripper.

  • Patent number: 4068792
Abstract: A device is described for masking the gold connector tabs located along the edges of printed circuit boards to prevent the connectors from becoming solder coated during wave solder operations. The device is comprised of a pair of angle sections coupled to each other by tensioning means. The sections are easily applied to the circuit board assembly without scratching the gold contacts. Moreover, they provide stiffness to the board and a dam to prevent solder from flowing over the board and damaging the electrical components mounted thereon during wave soldering. The device is easily removable from the circuit boards after soldering and is reusable. Finally, the device of the present invention is characterized by long life, reasonable cost and ease of use.

  • Patent number: 4066203
Abstract: A method of electrically and hydraulically connecting a conductor bar having a plurality of hollow water-cooled conductors involves compressing the conductor bar and shims of brazing material in a connector clip formed of a pair of mating clip members. Brazing shims (strips and bands) are placed in desired positions, and then the components are heated and hydraulically compressed. The conductor bar and brazing material assembly is sized for a tight fit in one dimension, but oversized in another dimension so that compression results in a desired distribution of the molten brazing material. During compression, the clip members are secured from relative motion, other than displacement toward one another, and air is passed through the hollow conductors to prevent the accumulation of brazing material in the open ends thereof. In addition to the clip members, the connector device includes a water inlet member with a stem that is inserted between and brazed to the clip members after the compression step.
