  • Patent number: 5961230
Abstract: A printer, in particular of the type used for printing cheques with magnetic ink, comprises a control device for advancing a ribbon at a velocity substantially equal to the velocity of documents. The velocity of documents and the ribbon are controlled by an electronic unit which drives respectively a first motor and a second motor. The control device includes a presser means comprised of a pair of rollers urged against a motor driven roller. This arrangement enables the precise control of the velocity at which the ribbon is advanced. Downstream of the control device, the combined action of a first temporary take up device outside the cartridge and a second permanent take up device inside the cartridge assures the insertion of used ribbon into the cartridge and its winding around a reel by means of a third motor timely controlled by the electronic unit.

  • Patent number: 5961227
Abstract: The number of pulses N corresponding to the gradation level of a print dot is read out from a table and stored in a counter 63 (S1). The first pulse is applied to the heating elements for the duration T.sub.1 (S4) and is stopped for the duration T.sub.off (S6). The number of pulses N is read out and restored in the counter after the subtraction of 1 therefrom (S7). The second pulse is applied for the duration T.sub.2 (S9) and then interrupted for the duration T.sub.off (S11). The number of pulses N is read out and, after 1 subtracted therefrom, is restored (S12). If the number of pulses N read out is not zero, the step for the application of pulses for the duration T.sub.2 (S9) and subsequent steps are repeated. If the number of pulses N is zero, the application of pulses is terminated (S13).

  • Patent number: 5957596
Abstract: The present invention relates to a label printing apparatus for printing image data onto a tape. The label printing apparatus has a memory for storing image data to be printed onto the tape, a print head for recording the image data dot wise onto the tape in subsequent printing cycles, a platen for conveying the recording medium relative to the print head and means for determining the number of dots to be activated in each printing cycle. In order to obtain high print quality, a speed adjuster is provided to control the speed of the platen in response to the number of image data stored in the memory and the number of dots to be activated in the present printing cycle. The present invention also relates to a method for controlling the platen and the print head to avoid misalignment of subsequent printing lines, when the platen must stop due to lack of data in the memory.

  • Patent number: 5957052
Abstract: A printing machine roller, especially an ink roller, and preferably an ink distributor roller, with a coating of the entire outer cylindrical surface. The coating consists of a support matrix of a good heat-conducting and low-wear metal, e.g., nickel or aluminum-silicon alloy and graphite or plastic particles, e.g., of polyester, inlaid into the metal matrix. The coating is produced by thermal spraying, preferably plasma spraying or flame spraying. The residual porosity of the coating can be varied within wide limits based on process requirements. This residual porosity also permits the ink-friendliness to be varied within wide limits via sealing with an ink-friendly plastic. The roughness of such layers can be adjusted virtually as desired to the individual requirements of the offset process.

  • Patent number: 5957048
Abstract: This invention is a clamping strip attached to a flexible sheet, such as screen printing fabric, that is shaped to enable it to lock into a channel. The strip comprises a first and a second leg joined to each other at an approximately right angle. The first leg is of a size so as to position into the recess on one side of the channel leaving enough room for at least one thickness of the flexible sheet. The second leg is of a size so as to position within the channel at the same time as the first leg is positioned. The flexible sheet is affixed to the strip and wraps around the first leg inside the recess and continues over a rounded edge above the recess. With the strip and attached flexible sheet positioned into the channel with the flexible sheet wrapped over the rounded edge, a pulling or tensioning of the flexible sheet will cause the strip and flexible sheet to become locked in the channel.

  • Patent number: 5951181
Abstract: A plurality of spaced-apart deflector guides are positioned over the input platen of a printer. They are suspended from an elongated media shield which extends laterally across an input media path such that a leading edge of media can easily fit under both the media shield and deflector guides. Each deflector guide has a plurality of downward facing surfaces such as ribs for directing the media toward an input slot defined by a top surface of the input platen, a terminal edge of the deflector guides, and a terminal edge of the media shield. The spaces between the deflector guides are wide enough to allow both hands to be placed directly on the media adjacent to or between two deflector guides for easy manual manipulation of a leading edge of the media into general alignment with the input slot where it can be gripped between the main pick roller and opposing pinch wheels for feeding into a print zone on the printer. The invention is applicable to both sheet feed and rollfeed printer devices.
