  • Patent number: 4193264
Abstract: A vacuum motor operatively connected to a slave cylinder operates same via pressure differential variations across a reciprocatable vacuum motor piston to pump working fluid from a reservoir to an accumulator through two one way valves. The pressure differential variation can be derived from gear changing of the vehicle, induced through a three way electromagnetic valve controlled by a circuit characterized by either an unstable multivibrator, a dual stable multivibrator, a thyristor or a self maintaining relay, or induced through a purely mechanically operated valve characterized by lost motion and snap action position maintain devices. A pressure relief valve may be provided which dumps excessive pressurized fluid in the accumulator and returns same to the reservoir.

  • Patent number: 4193265
Abstract: A transducer for converting the energy of ocean currents to the energy of a high-pressure fluid comprises a plurality of transducer units each including a sea-water channel, a plenum room overlying the channel, an impeller rotatably disposed in the channel and plenum room and rotatable by a sea-water flow through the channel, and a converter mechanism operatively coupled with the shaft of the impeller for producing a high-pressure fluid in response to revolution of the impeller. To prevent pressurized air in the plenum room for leaking out of the transducer unit when the transducer is joggled underwater as in stormy conditions, a pair of air-trapping chambers are located one on each side of the plenum room and open toward the channel for receiving any air which has escaped from the plenum room through the channel.

Abstract: The improved design of a closed toroidal circuit enabling various arrangements of bladed converter members or elements, with many of them standardized for the economical manufacture of various types of converters. The shapes of the outer and inner walls of the toroidal circuit in a radial converter plane are determined by a construction trapezoid and construction rectangle, respectively, that are specified by a system of rectangular coordinates and which have their corners rounded by arcs of specified radii. The outer and inner walls are tangent to an infinite number of circles the diameter of each of which is formulated in relation to the distance of the circle center from the converter axis and the maximum radius of the circuit.

  • Patent number: 4189917
Abstract: The air hammer is of the type employing a body having a first portion with a central bore and a piston reciprocable in the bore by pressurized air under control of an automatic valve. The body has a second or muffler portion which embraces the first portion and is operative to muffle the noise created by exhaust air from the bore. The muffler portion is provided with pressurized air passage means through which the pressurized air must pass for causing operation of the piston. The passage means are so arranged that removal of the muffler portion from the body disrupts the supply of pressurized air to the piston and thereby renders the hammer inoperative. Headers are provided on the ends of the body and are drawn tightly against the ends of the muffler portion by tie bolts which extend through through-passages, respectively, in the muffler portion.

  • Patent number: 4189921
Abstract: A hydraulic controller for a hydrostatic transmission to control a number of functions of a variable displacement pump or motor of the transmission. A valve includes a spool biased in one direction by a spring and in the opposite direction by fluid pressure in a chamber communicating with the charge pump. A variable orifice communicates the chamber with a drain. The size of the orifice is controlled electrically by a signal representative of swashplate position. Depending upon the pressure of the fluid in the chamber, the valve will directly vary the pressure ported from the charge pump to the standard controller. A needle roller has one end in contact with the end of the spool communicating with the chamber. A high pressure signal is provided via a shuttle valve across the high and low pressure conduits of the transmission to the other end of the needle roller.

  • Patent number: 4188859
Abstract: A fluid driven mechanism in the form of a fluid motor or fluid pump which is transmissionless, wherein speed and power are selectively varied by the operator through corresponding adjustment in the orientation of angularly disposed power transmitting structure. A large capacity unrestricted rotating fluid distributor vortically and cyclically directs ingress fluid successively to a series of pistons which is power-related to the power transmitting structure. The fluid distributor is uniquely caused to float during its rotation by oppositely imposed fluid under pressure within aligned eccentric chambers, each chamber being formed partly in the rotating distributor and partly in adjacent stationary structure.

  • Patent number: 4188787
Abstract: Disclosed are methods and apparatus for controlling the flow of hydraulic fluid to and from a work cylinder. The disclosed system includes a reversible variable displacement pump interconnected between a work cylinder and a selector valve which may connect the pump with any of a plurality of fluid reservoirs. The fluid reservoirs contain hydraulic fluid at variable pressures so that the pressure at the work cylinder may be raised to pressures well above the pressure differential capacity of the pump at maximum flow rate by selectively increasing the pressure on the reservoir side of the pump. The system includes means for controlling the pressure at each port of the pump so that the pressue on the output port is always greater than the pressure on the input port regardless of the direction of flow through the pump and regardless of pressures at other points in the system.
