  • Patent number: 4410382
Abstract: A telltale structure which includes an elongate base tape with a pressure sensitive adhesive coating on the inner surface to engage the surface of an object to be studied.Bonded to the outer surface of the base tape is an elongate overlay tape which contains a plurality of longitudinally spaced apertures.Captured between the juxtaposed portion of the tapes are the inner end portions of thin, flexible streamers which have the free outer portions thereof within the confines of the apertures, whereby said outer portions can be acted upon by a fluid medium flowing over the surface of the object to be studied. In producing the telltale structure, a continuous length of streamer material is laminated between the two tapes to provide streamer portions which are exposed in the apertures in the overlay tape, and one end of each exposed portion is then severed to provide the aforesaid free outer portions.

  • Patent number: 4410386
Abstract: A process and chemical composition for laminating a photograph or lithograph onto canvas are disclosed whereby the resulting product appears similar to an oil painting, as well as providing improved depth. The process involves stripping a photograph or lithograph from a substantial portion of its backing, followed by application of the chemical composition to the photograph. The chemical composition includes a surfactant and an optical brightener such as a fluorescent whitening agent, and can include a sensitizer and stabilizer. The treated photograph or lithograph is then bonded to a textured backing at elevated temperature and pressure.

  • Patent number: 4409045
Abstract: Method and apparatus for fabricating and seaming two-piece containers such as frustoconical cups and the like are provided which include a two-piece mandrel having retractable tip or nose piece which is coaxial in its relation to the main body of the mandrel in its extended position and retracts to an offset position. The retraction/extension path is configured to constrain the surface of the tip or nose piece to impart a progressive sealing pressure to a portion of the container side seam against the reaction surface of a seam clamp. The tip also has vacuum porting for holding a bottom blank during the container forming process and acts to seal the bottom blank in the container bottom curl and in the case of effecting heat sealed seams in the container, to position the bottom blank so as to preclude heat damage to the bottom wet line area of the container.

  • Patent number: 4409063
Abstract: Apparatus and process for hot-stamping molded plastic containers in which the container is moved past a heated die having a platen with a printing die, the die being universally movable so that linear uniform pressure is exerted between a confronting container surface and die surface. As the container moves across the die surface, it is rotated so that foil which is pinched between the container and die is transferred onto the surface of the rotatable container. The uniform linear pressure between container and die, transfers foil to the accompaniment of rotation of the container so that defect-free lamination of foil is transferred onto the container surface to form decorative or alpha numeric information. The operation is continuous, with successively spaced containers moving into printing position relatively to the die, where the hot-stamping operation is repeated. Containers are automatically removed after printing, and successive containers supplied either manually or automatically.

  • Patent number: 4407685
Abstract: A release film is coated with a thin layer of metal by, for example, a vapor deposition process. The film is then stretched over a composite object, made, e.g., of fiberglass-epoxy or graphite-epoxy, which one desires to metallize. A treatment involving either vacuum or pressure and that may involve heat is used to transfer the thin metal layer to the composite object. The stretchable film is then peeled off the object, leaving a metal coating bonded to the object. The epoxy resin or other adhesive in the composite material gives structural integrity to the object as well as provides a bond for the metal, so that the composite object may be molded and metallized in one step. Alternatively, a two-step process of molding then metallizing or metallizing then molding can be employed.

  • Patent number: 4407220
Abstract: A machine for applying a layer of cement along the outer circumference of a tire for the purposes of retreading the tire, the machine comprises an air blower for removing dust adhered to the tire after the buffing process, a tire cart carrier which automatically raises the tire into spraying position and a spray head which applies a layer of cement on the outer circumference of the tire as the tire is rotated upon the tire cart carrier. The cement spraying machine is enclosed within a vent hood which is associated with a blower to vent all fumes from the spraying area. The tire cart carrier comprises a rotating support structure for contacting the upper bead of the tire and a weighted centering beam which contacts the lower bead of the tire as the tire cart carrier is raised into spraying position. • Patent number: 4406721
Abstract: A machine and method for applying heat shrink labels or the like to articles such as containers having cylindrical body portions and an end portion or portions adjoining the body portion and sloping inwardly therefrom. The label has a length such that its leading end overlaps the trailing end and a seam is formed at the overlap. The label is secured to the article by adhesive between the leading end and the container and by adhesive between the overlapping leading end and trailing end. The label is of a width such that it projects beyond the junction or junctions of the end portion or portions with the body portion, resulting in free standing edge or edges which are then heat shrunk onto the container. To provide pressure in forming the seam of the free standing edge or edges, a tongue or tongues are interposed between the article and the intended seam which provide a continuation of the body of the article.

  • Patent number: 4405403
Abstract: An article-holding turret which is particularly suitable for rotatably conveying large objects. A friction brake is fixed to a pawl plate, and these axially mounted structures are oscillated by a rack and pinion assembly driven from a turret index shuttle. A ratchet and spindle assembly is coaxially mounted on the turret's central shaft, and caused to periodically index through desired angular intervals by a pawl carried on the pawl plate. The forward rotation of the ratchet and spindle assembly is accompanied by a commensurate rotation of the friction brake, thereby minimizing rotational drive forces required during this segment. An auxiliary pawl and bracket assembly prevents retrogression of the ratchet and spindle during the reverse oscillation of the friction brake assembly.
