  • Patent number: 11174359
Abstract: Composite material can include a matrix material, a fiber dispersed in the matrix material, and an ultraviolet (UV)-light sensitive mechanophore grafted to a surface of the fiber. A method for making a fiber-reinforced polymer composite can include contacting a fiber in a first solution, rinsing and then drying intermediate fiber, contacting dried fiber in a third solution, rinsing, and then drying the rinsed fiber thereby generating functionalized fiber that is sensitive to ultraviolet light. The functionalized fiber can be combined with a polymer matrix material, cured, and irradiated, thereby generating a fiber-reinforced polymer composite.

  • Patent number: 11168185
Abstract: Provided is a process for preparing a PVDC additive blend in which an additive is blended with PVDC under high shear blending to produce a highly uniform blend in which the additive is homogeneously distributed throughout the PVDC. It has been found that performing high shear blending in multiple successive stages in which the concentration of the additive in the blend is reduced in each successive stage helps in prove the uniformity of the PVDC additive blend. For example, the high shear blending may be carried out in 2 to 6 stages, and in particular, from 2 to 4 stages. Also provided is a PVDC additive blend having a uniform blend of PVDC and an additive, such as a blend of a PVDC copolymer of vinylidene chloride and methyl acrylate and a fluorescing agent, such as 2,2?(2,5-thiophenylendiyl)bis(5-tert-butylbenzoxazole).

  • Patent number: 11168201
Abstract: A silica-blended resin varnish contains a silica sol with a high dispersibility that is dispersed in a ketone organic solvent, in a nitrogen atom-containing polymer. The particles have an average size of 5 to 100 nm and have a carbon-carbon unsaturated bond-containing organic group and an alkoxy group bonded to surfaces thereof. The carbon-carbon unsaturated bond-containing organic group is bonded at 0.5 to 2.0 groups per unit area (nm2) of the particle surfaces. The alkoxy group is bonded at 0.1 to 2.0 groups per unit area (nm2) of the particle surfaces. The molar ratio of {(the carbon-carbon unsaturated bond-containing organic group)/(the alkoxy group)} is 0.5 to 5.0. The carbon-carbon unsaturated bond-containing organic group may be a phenyl group-containing organic group or a (meth)acryloyl group-containing organic group.

  • Patent number: 11161967
Abstract: A powder composition suitable for use in selective laser sintering for printing an object. The powder composition includes a first fraction including a plurality of polyaryletherketone (PAEK) particles having a mean diameter less than 30 microns, a second fraction having a plurality of polyaryletherketone (PAEK) particles having a mean diameter greater than 30 microns, and a third fraction having a plurality of carbon fibers. The first fraction and the second fraction are formed by an air classification separation performed on a pulverized powder. After the separation, the first fraction, the second fraction, and the third fraction are blended in a high intensity mixer. The powder composition when used in selective laser sinter results in parts with increased tensile strength and reduced surface roughness, among other improvements, as compared to similar powders omitting the first fraction. The PAEK may include polyetherketoneketone (PEKK).
