    Abstract: A holding device or "cradle" for holding a coil of sheet material so that the material can be unrolled from the coil and cut to length. The cradle takes the form of an open-topped tray having side walls and an end wall, the side walls supporting two horizontally disposed rollers upon which the coil is super-imposed. A third roller projects through the annular coil and is spring biased into contact with the interior of the coil to retain the coil in position. The unrolled sheet material is guided by the curved bottom onto a scoring or cutting bed which has spaced, parallel non-marring surfaces which are raised above the surface of the bed to define a cutting space therebetween. An upper score guide is moveable away from the scoring bed to accommodate the entry of sheet material therebetween and is moveable downwardly into contact with the sheet material to clamp the sheet material in position for cutting and to provide an elongated cutting edge which is aligned with the space between the non-marring surfaces.

    Abstract: A spool-like member for being removably attached to the drive wheels of a vehicle. One end of a flexible cable is attached to the spool-like member. The other end of the cable is attached to a fixed object such as a tree or rock. Rotation of the drive wheels will cause the cable to wind around the spool-like member and will cause the vehicle to be drawn toward the fixed object. The spool-like member can be removed from the drive wheels regardless of whether the cable is fully wound onto the spool-like member or not. The drive wheels can be removed from the vehicle without removing the spool-like members from the drive wheels.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for dispensing flexible materials from multiple coils which are stacked in coaxial alignment upon a rotatable turntable so that the open inner eye of each coil is vertically oriented. For dispensing, the top most coil is clamped between a snubber roll on the outer periphery, and an expandable core which is positioned within the inner eye and activated to provide gripping engagement therewith. Since the expandable core is flexible, it conforms to the shape of the inner eye, thus readily adapting the invention for use with coils which are noncircular or irregularly formed. In a preferred form, the expandable core and snubber roll are coactively connected components of the floating arm assembly which is completely separable from both the turntable and the pay-out assembly. As thus constructed, the floating arm assembly drifts horizontally to follow the irregular motion resulting from rotation of off-centered coils.

Splines (40) on the piston (1) intermesh with teeth (42a) of a take off part (42) which is laterally spaced and in side by side relationship with the piston. By rotation of the piston (1) an output shaft (44) of the take off part (42) is rotated. In a modification of the take off part instead of being in side by side relationship is an extension of the piston and the track is of variable curved portions.

    Abstract: A mechanism for dispensing a measuring tape into the wraps of a length of cloth that is being wound onto a mandrel has a carriage that is mounted for reciprocal movement along a guide extending transversely to the length of the cloth. The carriage has means for rotatably mounting two rolls of tape so that when one is exhausted the other quickly may be utilized and the first replaced while the second is being dispensed. The mechanism has a drive wheel which is driven by engagement with the cloth being wound, or a part of the cloth winding machine, for positively reciprocating the carriage so that the only tension of the measuring tape is that required to unwind the roll.

    Abstract: This relates to a dancer roll assembly wherein there are a pair of dancer roll assemblies disposed in side-by-side relation and each vertically disposed. Each dancer roll assembly includes an upper shaft and a lower shaft having spaced sprockets thereon which are vertically aligned and over which are engaged belts. Each pair of belts carries a dancer doll for vertical movement under the influence of a tensioned web passed around the dancer roll. The upper shaft is a control shaft and has connected thereto a pneumatic control motor which resists the rotation of the shaft and thus resists the upward movement of the dancer roll. After the dancer roll has moved to an uppermost permitted position, the pneumatic motor is actuated to rotate the upper shaft and thus return the dancer roll to its lowermost starting position. The tension on the web is controlled by controlling the air pressure to the air motor.

A hydrodynamic fluid film gap is provided between a partial cylindrical journal surface of the eccentric member (80) and a full cylindrical bearing surface of the housing (62), and the housing contains hydrodynamic fluid. Radial loading between the housing (62), shaft (78) and eccentric member (80) is more uniformly distributed to reduce structural deflections and thus facilitate maintenance of the proper film of hydrodynamic fluid during operation of the actuator (22). If desired, the fluid can be circulated through the housing (62) for cooling purposes.

    Abstract: A brake control system for an unwinder measures the line speed of the moving web and the rpm of the roll and produces electrical output signals proportional to each, which signals are operated upon to produce a main brake control signal to apply a braking force proportional to the roll diameter as it is constantly decreasing, and a further output signal which is proportional to the energy in the roll based on the calculation of the cube of the diameter of the roll so that required braking force modification will occur during acceleration and deceleration of the web in order to maintain essentially constant web tension. An additional feedback from a web tension measuring device is also provided which adjusts the braking force to produce an actual tension equal to the desired tension which has been included in the main braking force output signal proportional to the roll diameter.
