  • Patent number: 4373358
Abstract: A torque limiting mechanism provides for a spring loaded coupling of driver and driven friction discs for simultaneous and uniform rotation. A spring retainer system is incorporated which provides restraint against expansion of the spring beyond a predetermined limit. In a preferred embodiment the spring becomes inoperative to urge the discs together after friction linings on the discs have worn to a predetermined design limit. A condition of zero torque is thereby created, thus signalling need for replacement of friction linings.

  • Patent number: 4371123
Abstract: A plastic tape reel comprising a hub consisting of an outer cylindrical part adapted to permit a tape to be wound into a roll thereon and an inner cylindrical part defining a hollow pocket for engagement with the reel engaging shaft and two flanges attached one each to the opposite ends of the hub. The annular portion connecting the inner cylindrical part and the outer cylindrical part of the hub is bent in the axial direction throughout the entire circumferential extent so that the inner boundary thereof joins one axial end of the inner cylindrical part and the outer boundary thereof joins the outer cylindrical part at a location halfway along the entire axial length thereof. In the annular depression on the reverse side of the bent portion, a plurality of ribs are disposed in the radial directions and spaced by suitable circumferential intervals. The ribs serve as auxiliary paths for molten resin at the time the tape reel is injection molded.

  • Patent number: 4365768
Abstract: An apparatus useful for lifting a reel having cable wound thereabout for dispensing the cable includes oppositely positioned bearing housings operative to support spindle assemblies which are receivable into the reel to occasion rotation of the reel about its mandrel apertures or central axis. At least one of the bearing housings has a disk brake assembly operative therewith and associated controlling mechanisms for resisting rotation of one of the spindle assemblies. A braker arm attached to the spindle assembly operative with the disk brake assembly imparts a torque opposing the rotation of the reel for braking the reel. • Patent number: 4365767
Abstract: A tensioning and compression apparatus is disclosed for systems for laminating facing on insulation mats and for coiling the laminate. The system includes a powered roll around which the blanket is coiled and a tensioning and compression roll which engages the exterior surface with a force in a direction toward the powered roll which can be maintained at a constant level during any coiling operation or changed as a function of the diameter of the roll during the coiling operation. Force on the tension and compression roll is provided by a piston and cylinder actuator supplied with related positive pressures to both ends of the cylinder. The relationship between the two pressures determines the output force of the cylinder and the force applied by the tension and compression roll to the coil being formed. Separately adjustable control circuits are provided to supply the pressure to each end of the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4364503
Abstract: There is disclosed web feeding apparatus and method for feeding a web from a web roll to a utilization device. The paying out of the web from the web roll into a U-shaped buffer loop is assisted by a pair of cooperating feed rolls which engage the web along the buffer loop. When the loop decreases to a certain extent, a sensing member causes the feed rolls to rotate to pay additional web material out of the web roll until the loop has increased to a certain extent. The web material extends from the buffer loop over the web roll and is guided to the utilization device, for example, a printer. The feed rolls can be caused to rotate when a manually engageable lever is moved in one direction. Alternatively the feed rolls can be separated and caused to rotate when the member is moved in the opposite direction. The apparatus also includes a reel assembly having a reel for handling web rolls having a variety of different widths.

  • Patent number: 4360356
Abstract: Apparatus for removing curl from a continuous moving web. The apparatus includes cylindrical members for supporting and directing the continuous web during its travel and a pair of engagement members between which the web travels. The engagement members are pivotally movable so that either surface of the web can be engaged by one of the engagement members with any desired degree of pressure for removing the curl in the continuous web during travel thereof. If the curl is upwardly, the engagement members are pivoted to engage one surface of the continuous web. If the curl is downwardly, the engagement members are pivoted to engage the opposite surface of the web. The degree of pressure applied for decurl action can be adjusted by adjusting the angle of the engagement members with respect to the line of travel of the continuous web. The apparatus also includes brush members engageable with the web to control the tensional forces upon the web as the web engages one or both of the engagement members.

  • Patent number: 4359195
Abstract: An unwinding apparatus for rolls of materials pivotably mounts the rolls with a pivot drive at each end of the roll. The torque of each pivot drive is equalized relative to the machine frame in each direction of rotation by providing for each pivot drive, a resiliently mounted lever which is fixed to the pivot drive and a contact member which is linked to the lever. Four switches are arranged in pairs symmetrically with respect to the contact member and are actuated thereby in response to movement of the lever resulting from torquing by the pivot drives.

  • Patent number: 4356960
Abstract: From the centrifugal basket chamber to which the liquid-solids mixture is fed, the separated liquid discharges through an overflow outlet at the radially inner edge of an annular horizontal wall forming the upper end of said chamber, the discharging liquid then flowing upwardly along the inner surface of an annular vertical wall protruding upwardly from said horizontal wall and then flowing radially outward along the upper surface of a lip which overlies only the radially inner part of said horizontal wall in spaced relation thereto. The discharging liquid is thus prevented from contacting the upper surface of said horizontal wall and thereby imposing a drag on the rotating basket.
