Abstract: A resin for coating sand and a resin-coated sand produced therefrom wherein the resin is prepared by incorporating furan into a phenolic novolak resin. In the preferred practice, the resin is produced by reaction of furfuryl alcohol with a phenolic compound at an acid pH to give a furfuryl-phenolic intermediate in a first step, and then, in a second step, reacting the furfuryl-phenolic intermediate with a lower aliphatic aldehyde to produce the resin. The resin-coated sands of the present invention provide unexpectedly improved shakeout and collapsibility characteristics in the shell process.
Abstract: The invention concerns a composition for a friction material, e.g. for a clutch facing, of the type containing a fibrous reinforcement, a binder and various additives. The composition contains a thermoset binder, the binder making up 15 to 40% by volume of the material. The fibrous reinforcement is a mixture of inorganic and organic fibres which makes up about 70 to 33% by volume of the material. The inorganic fibre is selected from metal fibres, glass fibre, mineral wools, silica fibres and ceramic fibres. The organic fibre can be wood pulp, jute, sisal, cotton.
Abstract: Stable aqueous emulsions useful as coatings, primers for promoting vinyl plastisol adhesion to metal, and adhesives for bonding vinyl to metal with high environmental resistance, are described, which comprise: (a) aqueous polyurethane latexes substantially free of emulsifier and containing about 0.02 to 1% of a salt type group from the class consisting of ##STR1## (b) an aqueous casein cocondensed phenolic-formaldehyde resin emulsion; and (c) an ionic fluorocarbon surfactant; in proportions of about 25 to 99% (a), about 1 to 50% (b) and about 1 to 10,000 parts per million (c), by weight of the total composition. Such emulsions are useful per se as coatings and primers and single package adhesives. Two-package adhesives having superior properties are provided, in which the foregoing emulsions as part A are cured by a crosslinker, part B, in a ratio A:B in the range from about 100 to 2.5A:1B. The crosslinking agents may be glyoxal, melamineformaldehyde resins, or any formaldehyde donor.
Abstract: There is described a process for producing readily dispersible, nondusty dye preparations in granulated form, in which process difficultly water-soluble to water-insoluble dyes, pigments or optical brighteners, in a finely dispersed form, and water-insoluble carrier resins from the polyvinylacetal class are added, with vigorous shaking or stirring, to a two-phase system composed of water and a polar organic solvent having only limited solubility in the aqueous phase; the organic phase containing the dye and the carrier resin is dissipated by dilution with water; and the particles of the preparation are separated and freed from the aqueous, solvent-containing phase by rinsing and drying; the preparations which contain transferable dyes are especially useful for preparing a printing ink by dispersion in a liquid medium composed of water or of an organic solvent or of a mixture of water and an organic solvent; the printing inks thus obtained are themselves useful for printing paper which can be used in a transfe

Abstract: This invention relates to coating compositions which are "solid" prior to application, yet, which when applied to a substrate, flow and level in a manner similar to conventional coating compositions. The coating compositions of the invention comprise a gelled coating composition, capable of application and flow on a solid substrate comprising: (a) a water reducible polymer, (b) water, (c) an electrolyte, and (d) a colloidal gelling agent, gelable by interaction with the electrolyte, in an amount sufficient, when interacted with said electrolyte, to gel the composition to form a stable semisolid and to provide a composition reducible to a coating application viscosity upon the application of a relatively small shearing force at a relatively small shearing rate; which gelled coating composition, after being sheared to a coating application viscosity, does not recover substantial colloidal gelling agent contributed gel structure.

Abstract: Absorbent compositions comprising graft copolymers of starch are prepared by a simplified method of synthesis. By using a mixture of a nonionic acrylic monomer and an anionic sulfonic acid-substituted acrylic monomer, highly absorbent compositions are prepared without the need for an alkaline saponification step. These compositions are also characterized by their ability to absorb large amounts of aqueous fluids under highly acidic conditions.

Abstract: An etherified melamine-formaldehyde resin is disclosed that has prolonged shelf life, comparatively low free formaldehyde content, and is especially adapted as a binder for glass fiber mats. The melamine-formaldehyde resin is prepared in several distinct stages including condensation in a basic aqueous solution, etherification by cooling and acidification, neutralization with triethanolamine, and final stabilization. The free formaldehyde content of the resin so produced can be adjusted by reacting it with urea.
