Abstract: A liquid crystal display device includes: a pair of substrates at least one of which is transparent; a liquid crystal layer disposed between the pair of substrates; an electrode group formed on at least one substrate of the pair of substrates, for applying an electric field to the liquid crystal layer; a plurality of active elements connected to the electrode group; and a liquid crystal alignment film disposed on at least one substrate of the pair of substrates, in which the liquid crystal alignment film, which is formed by a photo-alignment process, contains polyimide formed using tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and/or diamine each having a specific chemical structure.

Abstract: Regioselectively substituted cellulose esters having a plurality of aryl-acyl substituents and a plurality of alkyl-acyl substituents are disclosed along with methods for making the same. Such cellulose esters may be suitable for use in optical films, such as optical films having certain Nz values, ?A optical films, and/or +C optical films. Abstract: The present invention relates to a pressure-sensitive adhesive composition, and a polarizer and a liquid crystal display (LCD) device using the pressure-sensitive adhesive composition, and more particularly, to a pressure-sensitive adhesive composition including (A) an acrylic copolymer and (B) a liquid optically-anisotropic compound having a mesogen core in its structure. The liquid optically-anisotropic compound having a mesogen core in its structure according to the present invention has superior solubility and compatibility with pressure-sensitive adhesive resin, and thus the pressure-sensitive adhesive composition including the liquid optically-anisotropic compound can relax stress caused by shrinkage of the polarizer and effectively compensate negative birefringence. Therefore, the polarizer and the LCD device using the pressure-sensitive adhesive composition can prevent light leakage originating from stress concentration in spite of long-term use.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display device that includes an array substrate, an opposite substrate and a liquid crystal display layer is described. The array substrate includes a pixel electrode and a lower alignment layer. The pixel electrode has a plurality of slit portions extending in different directions. The lower alignment layer includes a reactive mesogen (RM) diamine is formed on the pixel electrode to induce an alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecules. An upper alignment layer is formed on a common electrode of the opposite substrate. The RM is cured at surfaces of the lower and upper alignment layers in response to ultraviolet (UV) light, so that liquid crystal molecules have a pretilt angle. Therefore, the aperture ratio and the response time may be improved, and afterimages may be decreased, so that display quality may be improved.

Abstract: A dichroic guest-host polarizer comprises an oriented polymerized liquid crystal host and aligned therewith a dichroic guest. The dichroic ratio of the polarizer is about 15 or more. The polarizer may have a small thickness, be manufactured using a wet deposition method, optionally in accordance with a desired pattern, and be provided on the inside of a liquid crystal cell. Polymerizable liquid crystals having a highly ordered mesophase which may be suitable used to obtain highly oriented polymer films such as polarizer films are disclosed.
