Patent number: 6166284Abstract: The present invention is directed to a material-radioactive isotope combination, comprising a container made from a material and a radioactive isotope solution. The container is useful for the storage, shipment, or storage and shipment of the radioactive isotope. Preferably the material is characterized by having a nearly full compliment of double carbon bonds so that little, or no hydrogen is produced by the material in the presence of the radioactive isotope. Furthermore, the preferred material exhibits greater mechanical strength than that of glass, resistance to a temperature range of from about -40.degree. to about 160.degree. C., chemical inertness; and radiation resistance. An example of such materials includes PSF (polysulfone) and PETG (polyethylene terephalate G copolymer) and the radioactive isotope, of the material-radioactive isotope combination are selected from, the group consisting of Mo-99, I-131, I-125. W-188 and Cr-51.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1998Date of Patent: December 26, 2000Assignee: MDS Nordion Inc.Inventor: Steve Oelsner

Patent number: 6159435Abstract: A process for oxidation of ferrous ions in solution, and more particularly a process for improved base metal and/or uranium leaching from ores, concentrates or tailings using ferric ion as an oxidizing agent. A reaction vessel (10) holds a ferrous ion-containing solution, for example, a copper sulphide leach slurry or concentrate. An agitator (12) may be provided to promote leaching of the base metal into solution. Some of the ferrous ion-containing solution is drawn off from the reaction vessel (10) and pumped through an in-line mixer (14) via a feed pump (16). Oxygen is injected into the reactor (14) to facilitate oxidation of the ferrous sulphate to form ferric sulphate. The ferric ion-containing solution is then recirculated back to the reaction vessel (10) where the ferric ions are reused in the dissolution of copper sulphide into soluble copper sulphate.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1999Date of Patent: December 12, 2000Assignee: Atomaer Pty LtdInventor: Giao Nguyen

Patent number: 6087547Abstract: It has been discovered that an enzyme produced by Spartina alterniflora degrades halogenated organics. The present invention is therefore the use of the enzyme produced by genes of this plant to remediate soils contaminated with halogenated organics such as TCE, and to genetically alter other plants to produce this enzyme using the gene that produces plant dehaloperoxidase.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 1999Date of Patent: July 11, 2000Assignee: University of South CarolinaInventors: Laszlo Marton, Yung-Pin Chen, Mihaly Czako

Patent number: 6080906Abstract: A chemical munitions destruction system subjects the chemical agent and energetic materials to a series of treatment processes until a preselected level of destruction is achieved. The treatment processes include chemical neutralization and processing of both the chemical and energetic agents, biological treatment of the aqueous waste streams and catalytic oxidation of the air exhaust streams. In certain cases, the energetic agent and/or the propellant components of the munitions are converted to valuable chemicals by means of catalytic hydrotreating.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 1998Date of Patent: June 27, 2000Assignee: AlliedSignal, Inc.Inventors: Russell Ward Johnson, Francis Stephen Lupton, Brent F. Patent number: 6075176Abstract: A method of immobilizing mixed low-level waste is provided which uses low cost materials and has a relatively long hardening period. The method includes: forming a mixture of iron oxide powders having ratios, in mass %, of FeO:Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3 :Fe.sub.3 O.sub.4 equal to 25-40:40-10:35-50, or weighing a definite amount of magnetite powder. Metallurgical cinder can also be used as the source of iron oxides. A solution of the orthophosphoric acid, or a solution of the orthophosphoric acid and ferric oxide, is formed and a powder phase of low-level waste and the mixture of iron oxide powders or cinder (or magnetite powder) is also formed. The acid solution is mixed with the powder phase to form a slurry with the ratio of components (mass %) of waste:iron oxide powders or magnetite:acid solution=30-60:15-10:55-30. The slurry is blended to form a homogeneous mixture which is cured at room temperature to form the final product.Type: GrantFiled: August 7, 1998Date of Patent: June 13, 2000Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of EnergyInventors: Albert S. Patent number: 6053957Abstract: The present invention provides a waste treatment process and device thereof which can reduce the size and weight of organic waste by decomposing the waste to powder form and bacteria free substance that may be used as a kind of fertilizer for plants. The waste is first frozen by liquefied nitrogen in a cooling chamber to a temperature less than -200.degree. F., wherein during this freezing procedure, the gas generated from the waste must be removed from the cooling chamber. Then, the frozen nitrogen is immediately transferred to a heated chamber having a temperature of at least 160.degree. F. but not exceed 200.degree. F. During this heating procedure, the water content of the waste is sucked out of the heated chamber, so that the waste is decomposed to form the bacteria free powder.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 1998Date of Patent: April 25, 2000Assignee: ATT Environmental Technology Inc.Inventor: Thomas Chen

Patent number: 6045766Abstract: The invention relates to a process for reducing the residual hydrogen fluoride gases in a fluorinated plastic tank, in particular in a plastic tank for a motor vehicle, in which firstly the space within the tank is subjected to a fluorination step and then, in at least one gas flushing process, the reaction products of the fluorination step are removed from the plastic tank. In a process in which the undesired reaction product hydrogen fluoride is completely eliminated and which is suitable for efficient large-scale production, after the gas flushing process, a neutralization step is carried out to bind residual fluorination gases on the inner layers of the plastic tank.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1999Date of Patent: April 4, 2000Assignee: Mannesmann VDO AGInventor: Rainer Moser
