Abstract: A portable brining apparatus in which salt beds can be fully utilized between charges while simultaneously producing saturated brine in bulk is claimed. The apparatus comprises at least two salt dissolving tanks, each tank being generally cylindrical in shape and having a conical bottom in which a perforated exit pipe extends upwardly along the centerline thereof. Surrounding the exit pipe is a gravel bed which rests on the conical bottom and serves as a filter. Each tank in the apparatus is initially charged with a bed of salt placed atop the gravel. Valving allows one to maximize salt uptake in flows of water going into and out of the two tanks. When fully charged, the tanks are utilized in a parallel flow mode: water is introduced through spray nozzles placed near the top of each tank and then flows downwardly, in succession, through its salt bed, gravel filter and finally perforated exit pipe. The flows discharged from both tanks are combined in the final effluent.

Next, a source of heat is applied to the candle until at least that portion of the wax which defines the top surface thereof is melted. Then at least one gelatinous component formed from a mineral oil gel is placed onto the top surface such that the component is at least partially inserted into the molten wax. The candle is allowed to cool thereby hardening the molten wax and securing the gelatinous component. The melting point of the gelatinous component is higher than the melting point of the wax such that the component will not melt when placed upon the molten wax.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a single step sterilization wrapping material suitable for use, as an example, in wrapping surgical instruments and supplies for sterilization, transportation and storage. The material includes separate inner and outer wraps which, unlike previous wraps, are joined to one another. Common wrapping techniques involve wrapping items to be sterilized with two separate sheets of wrap. The present invention provides separate wraps which can be specially engineered to deliver specific properties for each sheet and then joined to one another so as to permit wrapping and opening in a neat single step process which increases efficiency and saves time and money. In special situations the outer wrap can be engineered with increased strength, the inner wrap with increased barrier properties and the inner and outer wraps can be made visually distinct from one another so that improper wrapping or opening is not a problem.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method of reducing the concentration of recalcitrant organic contamination in a soil matrix. The method includes the steps of incubating the contaminated soil matrix with unacidified ozone sufficient to reduce the concentration of the recalcitant organic contamination in the soil matrix by about 10% to about 15%; and then applying unacidified ozone to the soil matrix sufficient to substantially reduce the concentration of the recalcitrant organic contamination in the soil matrix. During the incubation phase, the ozone demand of competitive, non-contaminant ozone consumers in the soil is satisfied. Additionally, during the incubation phase, ozone conditions the contaminated soil matrix to prepare the recalcitrant organic contamination for subsequent rapid and substantial destruction.
