  • Patent number: 8357321
Abstract: A casting dope (11) prepared from CAP, additive and solvent is cast onto a casting belt (35), peeled and dried to be a primary film (14), and wound to a primary film roll (16). After the storage, the primary film (14) is unwound and fed into a tenter device (18). In the tenter device (18), while the stretch in the widthwise direction is performed, a relaxation of the primary film (14) in the longitudinal direction is made. If an extent percentage of the stretch is less than 70% to the predetermined value, the relation is started. The primary film (14) is fed out as a produced polymer film (22) from the tenter device (18), and the polymer film (22) is wound up to a product film roll (24). On the produced polymer film (22), the in-plane retardation increases and the thickness retardation decreases. Thus the optical properties become preferable.

  • Patent number: 8313687
Abstract: There is provided a method of making a balloon having a differential thickness. The method uses a raw tube composed of a thermoplastic polymer which is placed in an asymmetrical mold. The tube is preheated in the mold to a temperature sufficient to soften the material of the tube and inflated with a gas to generally uniformly stretch the material of the tube while allowing the tube to retract lengthwise, thus forming a balloon. The resulting completed balloon has a differential wall thickness wherein the upper region has a thickness of from about 15 to about 30 micrometers and the lower region has a thickness of from about 5 to about 15 micrometers.

  • Patent number: 8236118
Abstract: Certain example embodiments of this invention relate to the use of graphene as a transparent conductive coating (TCC). In certain example embodiments, graphene thin films grown on large areas hetero-epitaxially, e.g., on a catalyst thin film, from a hydrocarbon gas (such as, for example, C2H2, CH4, or the like). The graphene thin films of certain example embodiments may be doped or undoped. In certain example embodiments, graphene thin films, once formed, may be lifted off of their carrier substrates and transferred to receiving substrates, e.g., for inclusion in an intermediate or final product. Graphene grown, lifted, and transferred in this way may exhibit low sheet resistances (e.g., less than 150 ohms/square and lower when doped) and high transmission values (e.g., at least in the visible and infrared spectra).

  • Patent number: 8151851
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for forming a bag assembly by RF welding. A single source of RF energy is used to generate a high frequency electric field having a first strength between tube-welding electrodes of opposing die members and a second strength less than the first strength between perimeter-welding electrodes of the opposing die members. Respective portions of the bag assembly are subjected to this variable-strength field simultaneously so that the bag assembly is formed in one welding operation. Stand-offs are used in some embodiments to limit penetration of the electrodes into the weld areas.

Abstract: Solution casting of polymer film (76, 102) is provided. A dope (22, 115-117) containing a polymer of cellulose triacetate and solvent is cast on a casting support band (34, 121) which moves, to form a cast film (69, 122), and then the cast film is stripped from the casting support band and dried, to produce the polymer film. In the solution casting, the cast film is cooled shortly before stripping the cast film from the casting support band. Preferably, a cooling temperature to which the cast film is cooled is set lower than 6 deg. C. The cast film is cooled within a predetermined cooling region, disposed to start at a stripping point for the cast film, and to extend upstream therefrom with a length equal to or less than 25% of the length of the casting support band. • Patent number: 8092631
Abstract: An apparatus for welding a first plastic sheet to a second plastic sheet is provided. The apparatus includes an elongate die including a channel extending longitudinally along the die's welding face. In combination with a plate and a high frequency alternating current generator, the die and the plate are operable to compress the first and second plastic sheets in an overlapping arrangement and generate a high frequency alternating electromagnetic field between the die and the plate and weld the first and second plastic sheets to one another. The depth of the die channel prevents the formation of an electromagnetic field that is strong enough to weld the first and second plastic sheets in an area between the die channel and the plate. A die for use in such an apparatus and a method of use thereof are further provided.
