  • Patent number: 7308286
Abstract: A wireless communication receiver (20) comprises an antenna structure (22) and a joint searcher and channel estimator (24). The antenna structure acquires dimensionally differentiated signals which are concurrently utilized by the joint searcher and channel estimator for determining both a time of arrival and channel coefficient. The wireless communication receiver can be either a mobile terminal or a network node (e.g., a radio access network node such as a base station node, also called Node-B). In “spatial” embodiments, the antenna structure comprises an array of plural antennas. The signals acquired by different antennas of the array are dimensionally differentiated with regard to a spatial dimension, and the time of arrival and a composite channel coefficient are essentially concurrently determined by the joint searcher and channel estimator.

  • Patent number: 7289816
Abstract: A method of setting up a Push-To-Talk-over-Cellular (PoC) call between a calling mobile station (MS) and a called MS in a cellular communications network. In GSM/GPRS networks, the method decreases the call setup time, from the time the push-to-talk button is pressed, by causing the called MS to change to READY state before call setup is initiated. This is done by sending a USSD message to the called MS when the calling user selects a PoC contact list on the calling MS. The USSD message causes the called MS to perform a routing area update and change to READY state. This eliminates the need to page the called MS during call setup. In WCDMA networks, the USSD message causes the called MS to reestablish a Radio Resource Control (RRC) connection. The called MS maintains this connection, thereby enabling faster type 2 paging to be utilized for call setup.

  • Patent number: 7236786
Abstract: Methods and systems for providing fast handoff in WLAN-like communications system construct a caching candidate set based upon a weighted handoff tendency coefficient. The weighted handoff tendency coefficient is based upon the handoff matrix and the weighting factor. The handoff matrix is an adaptive two-dimensional array that provides a list of nearby access points relative to a mobile station and the weighting factor is a value that prioritizes the nearby access points based upon a signal quality indication. A home access point, once it is triggered to initialize proactive caching, provides the caching candidate set with registration data of the mobile station before a transfer of a connection between the home access point and one of the access points on the caching candidate set.

  • Patent number: 7167733
Abstract: A portable telephone (10) includes comprises a main body (11), a detachable member (12), a data transmission cable (13), and a spring biased spool (20). The detachable member includes an earphone module (121), a microphone module (122), and a rolling member (14). The detachable member is attachable to a top surface of the main body when the earphone and microphone modules are not in use. The spring biased spool is mounted within the main body. Opposite ends of the data transmission cable respectively connect with the spring biased spool and the detachable member. The spring biased spool enables the data transmission cable to be extended or retracted. When the data transmission cable is retracted, it is housed within the main body, and the detachable member can be firmly attached on the main body. The rolling member allows the earphone and the microphone modules to conveniently separate from each other at the beginning of a call, and to be conveniently coupled together at the end of a call.

  • Patent number: 7158795
Abstract: One of the common channels of the GSM system is the paging channel (PCH) for alerting the mobile station of an incoming call. The PCH message is scattered among four bursts as a result of coding, interleaving, and mapping processes before transmission. It is a waste of power for a handset to turn on and analyze all four bursts if the PCH message is a dummy one. Ideally, a handset needs to be able to make a determination whether a PCH message is a dummy one in as short of a time as possible and, if it is, turn off the power. Embodiments of this invention include methods and apparatus for enabling a handset to make this determination by merely analyzing the first received burst. Since most of the PCH messages are dummy ones, the proposed methods will cause noticeable savings in the power consumption of the GSM handsets.

  • Patent number: 7092720
Abstract: A method for characterizing base station processing and memory capabilities in a wireless communications system enables resource allocation to take these capabilities into account and to make allocations that avoid base station overload. A method for allocating resources in a wireless communication system including a base station and a radio network controller (RNC) begins by receiving an allocation request for a new service at the RNC. A set of resources is selected by the RNC to allocate to the new service, taking into account the capabilities of the base station. The allocation request is executed by the RNC if a set of resources can be found that does not exceed the capabilities of the base station.

  • Patent number: 6996395
Abstract: A method and device for receiving a voice mail from a cellular phone service provider utilizing a satellite radio. When the cellular phone service provider determines that a called party's cellular phone is unable to receive a call because the called cellular phone is not within a live cell, the calling party is prompted to leave a voice mail message. The voice mail message is uplinked to a space satellite, which transponds the message to a one-way satellite radio receiver. The radio receiver sends the voice mail message to a coupled recorder. A repeater, coupled to the recorder, then transmits the voice mail message to the called cellular phone to a highly limited zone. The called party's cellular phone then receives the voice mail message as if it were one-way cellular phone call.
