  • Patent number: 6502300
Abstract: An aspect of the invention can be regarded as a method of balancing a rotary actuator for use in a rotatable head stack assembly (HSA) portion in a disk drive. The rotary actuator has a pivot axis, and the rotatable HSA portion has an installed HSA portion center-of-gravity. The method provides for deetermining a desired rotary actuator center-of-gravity location for locating the installed HSA portion center-of-gravity along the pivot axis for mitigating acceleration of the rotary actuator about the pivot axis due to external linear acceleration experienced by the disk drive during a track-follow operation. The method further provides for measuring weight distribution characteristics of the rotary actuator to determine an actual rotary actuator center-of-gravity. The method further provides for selectively modifying weight distribution characteristics of the rotary actuator to locate the actual rotary actuator center-of-gravity at the desired rotary actuator center-of-gravity location.

  • Patent number: 6494689
Abstract: A motor stator of a scroll compressor is formed of a plurality of force fit uncoated plates. As the outer periphery of the uncoated plates is slightly greater than the inner periphery of the housing, the plates are secured to the housing without the need of a coating. After force fitting the plates into the housing, a tool positioned above and below the plates presses the uncoated plates together to eliminate any space between the plates, forming a solid motor stator.

  • Patent number: 6464480
Abstract: An oil spout is drilled in the crankcase of a scroll compressor between the outer seal and the coupling. The oil spout intersects the oil return chamber to redirect a portion of the oil exiting the oil return passage to the lower surface of the orbiting scroll between the outer seal and the coupling. It is preferred that the oil spout be substantially perpendicular to and smaller in diameter than the oil return passage. The oil spout provides a continual flow of additional lubrication to the outer seal and the coupling, preventing excessive wear of the outer seal and improving overall seal reliability.

  • Patent number: 6453540
Abstract: A method of inserting a terminal stud adapter section of a terminal stud into the radial bore of a rotor, involving a tool, which includes an elongated tool body having a head at one end from which a pair of pins project. The head is preferably plated with copper. The head is received in the recess of a stud adapter section with the pins engaging in apertures in the adapter section. By inserting the adapter section in the radial bore of a rotor, the adapter section can be threaded to the bore copper. Upon removal of the tool from the recess of the adapter section, an outer section of the terminal stud is received within the radial bore and an inner end thereof makes electrical connection with the adapter section.

  • Patent number: 6450788
Abstract: Disclosed is a piston pump having a pump housing with a cylinder head comprised of a first plate and a second plate. The plates which rest against each other and are screwed to the pump housing, have a first conduit which carries low-pressure fuel and leads to a first check valve disposed between the two plates. The check valve communicates with a cylinder chamber of the radial piston pump. A second conduit carrying high-pressure fuel leads from this cylinder chamber to a second check valve, which is disposed between the first plate and the pump housing. Seals that are appropriate to the load, in fact low-pressure seals, are provided in the region of the cylinder head that is subjected to low pressure and high-pressure seals are provided in the region of the cylinder head that is subjected to high pressure.

  • Patent number: 6450773
Abstract: A piezoelectric vacuum pump that includes a diaphragm comprising an upper diaphragm member and a lower diaphragm member. The diaphragm members preferably comprise thin metal sheets that are plated with a noble metal, such as gold, silver, or platinum, and are mated together so as to form a hermetic seal along the length of the diaphragm. The piezoelectric vacuum pump further includes a plurality of piezoelectric bimorph elements that are mounted to the upper surface of the upper diaphragm member. When the piezoelectric bimorph elements are electrically activated, they cause a localized portion of the upper diaphragm member to flex, thereby creating a change in volume in a portion of the diaphragm proximate to that piezoelectric bimorph element.

  • Patent number: 6447264
Abstract: A compressor system having a first compartment for housing relatively quietly operating equipment, and a second compartment for housing relatively noisy operating equipment. The second compartment is substantially closed off from the surrounding atmosphere to reduce the amount of noise that can be heard outside the compressor system on account of the noisy equipment operating within the compressor system housing. The second compartment includes a small air inlet opening and a small air outlet opening to allow enough air to flow through the second compartment to cool the equipment housed therein. The small openings reduce the amount of air-born noise which is released to the outside environment.

  • Patent number: 6439857
Abstract: An axial piston compressor produces air supplied to an air system of a vehicle, typically a heavy duty truck through a plurality of pistons held within a stationary block, and the movement of the pistons is predicated through the control of a pivotal swash plate. The pistons are idle in a neutral position of the swash plate, wherein a pressure above the pistons in the cylinder block counterbalances a thrust generated by an actuator upon the plate positioned in a plane extending perpendicular to a drive shaft. The plate oscillates in response to a pressure drop above the pistons causing the actuator to expand toward the plate and exert a thrust exceeding the lowered pressure above the pistons and enabling the swash plate to provide the pistons with reciprocal motion.
