  • Patent number: 6698762
Abstract: A lubricant leakage stop is provided on the shaft of a rotary device in the form of an annular groove in the shaft. In one embodiment the annular groove is formed with an annular inner surface at the bottom of the groove and with an annular intermediate surface positioned between two portions of the annular inner surface. The intermediate surface has a larger diameter dimension than the two inner surface portions on the axially opposite sides of the intermediate surface. The intermediate surface also has a smaller diameter dimension than that of the two portions of the shaft outer surface on axially opposite sides of the groove. In a second embodiment, the annular groove is formed with an annular inner surface that tapers from the bottom of the groove outwardly to the outer surface of the shaft on one side of the groove.

  • Patent number: 6685191
Abstract: An improved mechanical seal for a pump includes a seal cartridge slidably received inside an end plate. The cartridge includes an outer cylindrical stator member which is slidably received in the end plate and an inner cylindrical rotor which is rotatable within the stator member. The stator member is prevented from rotation in the end plate. The stator member includes a shoulder which extends outwardly over the end plate and is captured between the end plate and the housing of the pump. A clinching collar is fixed to the rotor member and retains the rotor member of the cartridge to the pump shaft. The clinching collar may pass through the end plate while attached to the rotor member and pump shaft. Lubricating passageways in the end plate allow lubricants to circulate past the seal cartridge bearing surfaces.

  • Patent number: 6685197
Abstract: A valve cover gasket has a perforated central core of metal including protrusions extending from planar sides of the core. Silk screened on each side of the core is a silicone foam rubber layer adapted to replace traditional cork gasket structures used for same purpose. The silicone rubber layers include a foaming agent that causes the material to expand during an oven-curing period. The amount of expansion of the silicone rubber coating is up to three times the thickness of the coating originally applied. As disclosed, the oven cure is for approximately 10 minutes at 300 degrees Fahrenheit. The protrusions prevent the silicone rubber material from being fully compressed; the protrusions are designed not to flatten under normal gasket compression loads. The peaks of the protrusions act as compression loads stops to limit amount of permissible compression of the silicone rubber layers.

  • Patent number: 6682081
Abstract: A reduced area gasket has a sealing ring around the inside perimeter of the gasket. Remaining portions of the gasket are removed or compressed so that the bolt load is focused on the sealing area when the flange is tightened. In this way, the lower bolt loads mandated by plastic piping may be met, and the required sealing may be further obtained.

  • Patent number: 6648339
Abstract: A method and apparatus for installing seals in an interference fit with a comating sealing surface by initially stretching the seal installed in a groove to reduce its cross-sectional thickness perpendicular to a comating sealing surface. The stretched seal is mated with a comating surface and then relaxed, permitting the seal to return to an unstretched position and to passively assume a preloaded position against the comating sealing surface. The seal may be repeatedly disengaged and reengaged by selectably restretching the seal and then selectably releasing it upon completion of repositioning.

  • Patent number: 6607197
Abstract: A sealing device for sealing the gap between two relatively moving members is provided with a pivot point on its cross-sectional perimeter. As pressure against the seal increases, the seal rotates about the pivot point, resulting in an increased sealing surface area on the seal. Additionally, a recess is provided on the cross sectional perimeter, advantageously offering a more frictionless sealing relationship between the seal and the moving member. Further, a recess is provided on outer portion of the cross sectional perimeter on a surface of the seal that would contact an energizer ring, the recess eliminating a dynamic interface between the energizer ring and the seal.

  • Patent number: 6568688
Abstract: This invention relates to a hydraulic seal arrangement between two, more particularly co-rotating shafts of especially a gas turbine engine, where the radially outer shaft when viewed with reference to the shafts' axis of rotation has an annulus extending radially outward along its circumference into which the radially inner shaft when viewed with reference to the shafts' axis of rotation projects with a web that extends radially outward across its circumference, and which annulus can through an inlet area be filled siphon-fashion under centrifugal effect with a hydraulic medium at least in the area of the free end of the web when the shaft(s) is (are) rotating. In accordance with the present invention, means are provided for exhausting part of the hydraulic medium, said means branching off from an annulus area that is farthest away from the inlet area.

  • Patent number: 6561520
Abstract: A rotary seal is provided that operates hydrodynamically in response to relative rotation even when subjected to exposure to a high fluid pressure from either side, and provides low breakout and running torque. A dynamic sealing lip having a wavy geometry provides hydrodynamic lubrication in response to relative rotation when little or no differential pressure is acting across the seal. When differential pressure exists, controlled fluid pressure-induced distortion results in a distorted dynamic sealing lip configuration that is suitable for hydrodynamic lubrication, regardless of which direction the differential pressure acts from.
