  • Patent number: 7131648
Abstract: A seal assembly adapted for use in creating a seal between an axially extending shaft and a support member. The seal assembly defines an axial passage through which the shaft extends, wherein a bearing assembly is mounted to the support member and includes a stationary outer race and an inner race which rotates along with the shaft. The seal assembly includes a rigid ring defining an axial passage through which the shaft extends and a resilient material carried by the ring. The resilient material defines an inner sealing section adapted to engage the shaft and an outer sealing section located radially outwardly of the inner sealing section and adapted to engage an outer sealing surface associated with the support member.

  • Patent number: 7073795
Abstract: A metallic gasket having a first seal line SL1 arranged in a manner to encircle the peripheral edge of an exhaust gas hole 3, a second seal line SL2 arranged along the outer peripheral edge of a base plate 2, and full beads 6, 7 formed each in a convex cross-section by bending the base plate 2 along both seal lines. Elastic sealing material 8 to 11, the height of which is substantially equal to the height of a convex portion of the beads, are fixed to the convex portion and a flat surface continuous to the convex portion. The elastic sealing material on the flat surface is so arranged as to cover up to the opening mouth position of the exhaust gas hole 3 or a peripheral edge position of the base plate 2 and, furthermore, elastic material parts 12, 13 are filled in a concave portion of the bead on the reverse side of the convex portion. This structure of the gasket leads to cost reduction and enables the gasket to maintain a stable sealing performance for a long period of time.

  • Patent number: 7070186
Abstract: A flanged boot having a rolling bearing interface suitable for connection to two mechanical components which are movable with respect to each other, in terms of both rotational and axial movements. The flanged boot has a first annular flange at one end and a second annular at the other end. A rolling bearing, such as for example a roller (needle) or ball bearing, is press-fit onto a suitably configured structure of a first mechanical component. One of the first and second annular flanges is interfaced sealingly with respect to the rolling bearing. The other of the first and second annular flanges is sealingly connected to a second mechanical component. • Patent number: 7014193
Abstract: A gasket with selectively positioned seal enhancement zones located in the web of the gasket is provided. The gasket is formed of a base sheet of gasket material cut to define an interior aperture bounded by an interior edge and webs. Slots are formed at selected locations within the seal enhancement zones and the slots are bounded by edges. An edge coating of polymeric material is applied to the slot edges and, in one embodiment, project beyond the facial planes of the base sheet to form raised rims. An edge coating also may be formed on the interior edge bounding the aperture of the gasket. When clamped between a pair of flange surfaces, the polymeric edge coatings on the slot edges engage and seal against the flange surfaces within the seal enhancement zones to provide an enhanced seal against leakage in these zones.

  • Patent number: 7011315
Abstract: The present invention is directed to an expandable pre-formed plug that is suitable for sealing and/or structurally reinforcing a structure having surfaces defining a space therebetween. The plug is comprised of at least an expandable inner core having an outer surface and a transportable outer skin that preferably substantially encapsulates the core. In a preferred embodiment, the shape of the unexpanded plug is designed to mate with the surfaces that define a space therebetween upon expansion. The adhesive skin is generally dry to the touch at room temperature, however, upon initiation of expansion, the inner core expands and the surrounding skin is displaced in a coordinated manner. After some period of expansion, the outer skin preferably durably adheres or bonds to the walls of the surfaces defining a space therebetween and the outer surface of the core. A method for using such a plug is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6979001
Abstract: A wheel bearing includes a sealing device 5 positioned between inner and outer members 1 and 2. This sealing device 5 includes an elastic member 14, which eventually forms an encoder grid and is provided on a first annular sealing plate 11. A second annular sealing plate 12 is provided with sealing lips 16a to 16c. An engagement 18 between a cylindrical wall 11a of the first annular sealing plate 11 and the inner member 1 is provided with an elastic member 20 made of a material dissimilar to that for the elastic material 14. This elastic member 20 may be a rubber coated layer, resin paint layer, a thin film of adhesive material or a ring-shaped rubber member. Thereby, any possible ingress of water across an engagement surface of the annular sealing plate is prevented, accompanied by increase of the lifetime of the bearing, with no problem associated with separation and displacement of the annular sealing plates. The magnetic flux density can also be easily secured.

  • Patent number: 6962345
Abstract: A gasket includes an intermediate layer having resilient sealing beads flanked by stopper beads. The three-layer gasket, particularly designed for heavy duty racing engines, provides a relatively robust cross-section in web-areas between cylinder bore apertures. A thin bottom layer includes wrap-around flanged portions extending about cylinder bore edges of the intermediate layer to partially overlap cylinder bore aperture areas of that layer. The flanged portions include a plurality of waves to increase forces to generate the seal. A thin top layer overlies the intermediate layer, as well as the overlapping portions of the bottom layer. In one described embodiment, the overlapping portions are limited to cylinder bore edges between cylinder bores. As a between-engine-overhaul indication of engine health, the top gasket layer is adapted via plastic deformation to form a permanent indentation in an aluminum cylinder head to signal excessive engine operation.

  • Patent number: 6962348
Abstract: A sealing apparatus includes a sealing arrangement and a groove in a base. The sealing arrangement may comprise an o-ring and a grounding gasket where both the o-ring and the grounding gasket partially protrude in a longitudinal direction from the groove. Thus, the grounding gasket, which is equipped with ends that can be pulled out of the groove, can be removed from the groove by a pulling force. This leaves the o-ring accessible for removal or maintenance at a much lower cost in terms of manufacturing and operational costs. The sealing arrangement may also include inner and outer o-rings which seal a fluid flow from the atmosphere.
