  • Patent number: 7111393
Abstract: A metal honeycomb body that is particularly suited for use in an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine is prepped for receiving a sensor that reaches into the interior of the honeycomb body. First, voids such as recesses and/or elongated holes are formed in at least one sheet metal foil. Then some of the foils are at least partially structured, as for example corrugated. Then the foils are stacked, coiled, wound, or otherwise made into a honeycomb structure, with the at least one sheet metal foil disposed to form a receiver that extends into the interior. The honeycomb structure is then inserting into a sheathing tube that is formed with an opening that is aligned at least partly with the receiver. Then the various pieces are joined by way of a suitable joining technique. The novel method prevents the channels from being damaged during manufacture when receivers for sensors are subsequently produced and allows, for example, an especially effective conversion of exhaust gases.

  • Patent number: 7103974
Abstract: A process for mounting an outer bearing ring involves press fitting a stamp into the outer ring so that the inner peripheral surface of the outer ring assumes the shape of the stamp. Using the stamp, the outer ring is then press fitted into the recess of a machine part so that the contour of the external peripheral surface of the outer ring is plastically molded through axial stretching into the machine part. To mount an inner ring, a stamp with a bore is press fitted onto the inner ring so that the inner peripheral surface of the inner ring pressing against the stamp assumes the shape of the bore of the stamp. Using the stamp, the inner ring is then press fitted onto the machine part and the contour of the inner peripheral surface of the inner ring is plastically molded through axial flow forming into the machine part.

  • Patent number: 7104104
Abstract: A duct structure (50), includes lengths of square/rectangular duct (52) manufactured by pre-forming the duct in round cross-section (51) and then transforming the round cross-section into square and rectangular cross-sections utilizing expandable die structures (58). The duct (52) may be connected together end to end by flanged connectors (54) formed from strip stock (71), that is notched at locations that correspond to the corners of the formed flange connector. The cross-sectional profile of the flanged connector is then formed by roll forming and/or bending and/or other techniques. Thereafter, the strip stock is bent at its notched locations to define the corners (80) of the flange connector (54) and then the free ends of the strip stock are fixed together.

  • Patent number: 7103975
Abstract: An intermediate bearing for a driveline of a commercial vehicle has a housing (7) with a stirrup-shaped cross-section. The housing (7) has a fixing face (12) formed of two straight portions (8, 9) and a first arched portion (10). A bearing member (15) is arranged between the portions (8, 9, 10). The bearing member (15) is rubber and is connected to the fixing face (12) by vulcanization. A locking element (23) bridges the space between the two straight portions (8, 9). The locking member (23) is attached to the bearing member (15). The bearing member (15) encloses a supporting ring (16) which serves to receive a rolling contact bearing. The locking element (23) is adjustable for the purpose of setting a pre-tension of the bearing member (15) towards the longitudinal axis (18) of the bore (17) of the supporting ring (16). The locking element (23) can be connected to the housing (7) after the required pre-tension has been set.

  • Patent number: 7100281
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a heat sink including heating a metal base to melt solder in grooves formed in the base. The base has a first coefficient of thermal expansion. The solder has a second coefficient of thermal expansion lower than the first coefficient of thermal expansion. The metal base and the solder are cooled and the metal base experiences tensile stresses and the solder experiences compressive stresses to form a concavity in a thermal face of the base. The thermal face is then planed. Over time, the tensile stresses and the compressive stresses reduce such that the thermal face becomes convex.

  • Patent number: 7096561
Abstract: A separator plate useful in a wet-type multiplate clutch is provided on a friction surface thereof with elongated asperities extending with regularity in a predetermined direction. Peak portions of the elongated asperities, said peak portions being to project toward a counterpart member when the separator plate is assembled in the wet-type multiplate clutch, have been removed to form elongated plateaus. The separator plate can be manufactured by fixedly mounting a blank for the separator plate on a work support, forming elongated asperities with regularity in a predetermined direction on one of opposite surfaces of the blank by a grinding wheel, and then removing peak portions of the elongated asperities, said peak portions being to project toward a counterpart member when the separator plate is assembled in the wet-type multiplate clutch, to form elongated plateaus.

  • Patent number: 7093359
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a composite structure uses a layer of an insulating material (22) as a mold for forming a substrate of a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) material (24). The insulating material may be formed in the shape of a cylinder (10) with the CMC material wound on an outer surface (14) of the cylinder to form a gas turbine combustor liner (20). Alternatively, the insulating material may be formed in the shape of an airfoil section (32) with the CMC material formed on an inside surface (36) of the insulating material. The airfoil section may be formed of a plurality of halves (42, 44) to facilitate the lay-up of the CMC material onto an easily accessible surface, with the halves then joined together to form the complete composite airfoil. In another embodiment, a box structure (102) defining a hot gas flow passage (98) is manufactured by forming insulating material in the shape of opposed airfoil halves (104) joined at respective opposed ends by platform members (109).

  • Patent number: 7093340
Abstract: A method of making a stick resistant cook surface or cooking vessel having the stick resistance in which a hard substrate metal is treated by mechanical buffing/polishing and/or by electropolishing to a high luster surface finish of less than 20 microinches and then coated with a layer of a ceramic nitride, such as zirconium nitride. The electropolishing step is particularly suited for treating non-round shapes or deep drawn cooking vessels having high side walls, such as pots and pans, or square or rectangular shapes which are otherwise difficult to mechanically buff in the interior due to the side wall geometry and/or corners.

Abstract: A microfabricated actuator of the vertical comb-drive (AVC) type or staggered vertical comb-drive type for torsional or linear applications includes torsion springs which permit self-aligned deformation of the device (micromirror) structure of the actuator through the heating of the torsional springs to plasticity. The torsional springs can include perpendicular-beam springs or double folded beams which allow axial movement of the spring when heated. Heating of the springs can be by bulk heating of the actuator structure or by Joule heating to the torsional springs by passing an electrical current therethrough.

  • Patent number: 7090487
Abstract: A catalytic combustor is formed from a stack of flat and corrugated metal strips. The stack may or may not be wound into a spiral or formed into some other curved structure. Some of the strips are displaced, or offset, relative to other strips, such that some strips do not extend as far as the end faces of the stack. The latter feature increases the effective height of the corrugations, at the end faces, and makes it feasible to weld the strips together. In one embodiment, there are high-amplitude corrugated strips and low-amplitude corrugated strips. The low-amplitude corrugated strips increase the effective cell density, but are displaced from the end faces of the stack so as to permit convenient welding. The resulting combustors therefore have very high cell density, yet can be manufactured economically.
