Patent number: 6193251Abstract: An improved automotive suspension system is provided which is capable of moving the center of a junction thereof in accordance with shock and swing applied to an automotive frame. The improved automotive suspension system exert both shock absorption and anti-swing functions against slight external shock and swing by the resultant forces between the components connected to the center of the junction, to thereby facilitate the running and turning of a vehicle in a stable manner. The automotive suspension system has a new mechanical structure which operates against a slight shock or swing, by using a plurality of hydraulic cylinders and a rigid suspension rod in a conventional MacPherson strut type suspension system.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 1999Date of Patent: February 27, 2001Inventor: Tae Hwan Jung

Patent number: 6193249Abstract: A steering mechanism is provided for tandem wheeled vehicles. The steering mechanism employs casters that are capable of swivelling. The casters are attached to a base member and a pair of resilient members is used to provide control over the degree of swivel of the casters. When turning, the caster rotates in the direction of turn and is restricted by the resilient members. The degree of rotation which the caster is allowed depends on the resilience of the resilient members and the force being applied to motivate the turn. A skateboard is also provided which incorporates the steering mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 1996Date of Patent: February 27, 2001Inventor: Salvatore Buscaglia

Patent number: 6186543Abstract: An air bag system for protecting a passenger seated on the front passenger seat of a vehicle. In an initial stage, the air bag is inflated mildly. In the subsequent stage, the bag is inflated also mildly. The directivity of produced gas can be reduced. The air bag can be inflated mildly while maintaining a large area. The air bag system includes an air bag case having an opening on its top side, an inflator disposed inside the air bag case, the aforementioned air bag folded in the air bag case, and a diffuser mounted between the inflator and the opening in the case. The air bag is placed in a side-by-side relation to the inflator and located behind the inflator inside the case. The diffuser is provided with numerous holes for supplying the gas. The diffuser acts to regulate flow of the gas from the inflator. At least when the gas is produced from the inflator, a space is created between the outer surface of the inflator and the diffuser.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 1998Date of Patent: February 13, 2001Assignee: Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd.Inventors: Takeshi Yamaji, Toru Ozaki

Patent number: 6182778Abstract: The motor compartment of a fork lift truck is modified so that the operator's feet extend into the space normally required by the motor compartment. A motor support structure is installed between the traction motor and the gear box which is connected to the steerable, powered wheel. The motor support structure occupies a smaller space than the traction motor itself, thus increasing the space available to the operator's compartment, at least in a limited vertical location adjacent to the support. With the traction motor out of the way, sufficient space for elevated pedals is provided, thus providing the operator ample space to operate the truck while seated. A battery compartment and hydraulic system of the truck are positioned adjacent to one another and ahead of the operator's compartment/motor compartment. In this way, the battery compartment and hydraulic system are positioned such that they are clear of the operator's compartment.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 1998Date of Patent: February 6, 2001Assignee: Crown Equipment CorporationInventors: Robert J. Patent number: 6179310Abstract: A vehicle roll stabilizing system uses front and rear stabilizer assemblies (23, 24) which each use a stabilizer bar (24) and a hydraulic ram (33, 35) to resist vehicle roll. Selector valves (43, 44) select pressure from a pump (36) or return hydraulic oil to a reservoir (37) according to 4 modes, two of which the selector valve is in an on and an off condition, respectively. A diverter valve (73) operates to control the pump pressure in proportion to lateral acceleration to provide an actuator effort which resists roll during vehicle cornering. This effort is provided up to a limit equivalent to a lateral acceleration of approximately 0.4 g after which roll is allowed to increase, either by keeping the pump pressure (and hence effort) constant or by increasing the pump pressure at a reduced rate.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1999Date of Patent: January 30, 2001Assignee: Rover Group LimitedInventors: David Andrew Clare, Phillip James Green, William Burdock, Mark Pask

Patent number: 6176512Abstract: An apparatus for helping to protect a vehicle occupant in a vehicle collision comprises an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device (12) having a mouth section (18) with a first opening (140) through which inflation fluid flows to inflate the occupant protection device. An inflator (16) provides the inflation fluid. A member (80) is located between the mouth section (18) and the inflator (16). The member (80) has a second opening (82) for directing the inflation fluid from the inflator (16) into the first opening (140). The second opening (82) has first and second portions (170 and 172). The second portion (172) of the second opening (82) overlies the first opening (140) in the mouth section (18). Inflation fluid from the inflator (16) thus enters the occupant protection device by flowing through the second portion (172) and through the first opening (140).Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 1999Date of Patent: January 23, 2001Assignee: TRW Vehicle Safety Systems Inc.Inventor: Alberto Rodriguez
