  • Patent number: 6853886
Abstract: A method is provided capable of improving the precision of estimating a vehicle body sideslip angle and values associated with the vehicle body sideslip angle using a simple and inexpensive method. The sideslip angle differential value unit calculates a vehicle body sideslip angle differential value by substituting a front wheel cornering power, which varies depending on the lateral acceleration output from the lateral acceleration sensor, detected values of the sensors, fixed physical quantities of the vehicle and known values, and the vehicle body sideslip angle calculated during the previous processing into a formula obtained by eliminating the rear wheel cornering power from an equation of equilibrium for the moment of the vehicle around the vertical axis and the equation of equilibrium for the force in the lateral direction of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 6847866
Abstract: Methods, apparatus and program product are provided to obtain a shortened holding pattern exit path for an aircraft from its current position (CP) in or entering a holding pattern to an allowed exit point (EP) of the holding pattern. The flight management system (FMS) determines which segment of the holding pattern the aircraft is currently on, i.e., A, B, or C defines in terms of the holding pattern turn points (TP1, TP2, TP3, TP4) and the waypoint (SP) which is symmetrical to the desired EP. The FMS compares the aircraft CP with EP and SP location and directs turns at the appropriate waypoints to give the shortest allowed exit pathway. Both Type I and Type II holding pattern entries are accommodated.

  • Patent number: 6847880
Abstract: A vehicle speed control system for a vehicle with an engine and an automatic transmission is comprised of a coast switch for decreasing a set vehicle speed and a controller connected with the coast switch. The controller controls a vehicle speed at the set vehicle speed by controlling the engine and the automatic transmission, and maintains a gear ratio of the automatic transmission at the gear ratio set at the moment before decreasing the set vehicle speed when the coast switch is being operated to decrease the set vehicle speed. Therefore, even if the throttle opening is opened to accelerate the vehicle, the engine rotation speed is never radically increased under such a transmission condition. This prevents the engine from generating noises excessively.

  • Patent number: 6836716
Abstract: A restraint system having a restraint device for protecting at least one passenger and a method for controlling a restraint system. The system and method act so as to to transform using a wavelet transformation, a signal measured by an acceleration sensor into a frequency range and in order to determine from the transformed signal the optimal triggering time point for the restraint device. For this purpose, the wavelet-transformed signal, on the one hand, is used for determining features in order to determine a crash type, and, on the other hand, to determine the braking acceleration energy. If the braking acceleration energy lies above a preestablished threshold value and if the identified crash type requires a triggering of the restraint system, then the restraint system is triggered.

  • Patent number: 6832153
Abstract: A system for tracking a fleet of vehicles, such as trucks or aircraft, includes a set of vehicle processing systems associated with each vehicle. Each vehicle processing system receives a travel route matrix from a remote server, and generates periodic vehicle position information which is compared with a propagating wave associated with different segments, or corridors, of the matrix. When the vehicle position is determined to lie outside the propagating wave and a geo-corridor at a particular point in time, alerts are sent to the server notifying the server of same. Corrective action can then be taken, such as remotely disabling the vehicle, or alerting a fleet manager.

  • Patent number: 6823243
Abstract: A data display firmware improvement for a scan tool adds the capability to view in a single presentation data uploaded from a motor vehicle's onboard diagnostic (OBD) computer synchronized with data from external test apparatus. The data display algorithms permit viewing of OBD data, including certain real-time oscilloscope-like waveforms, and allow viewing test results from compatible instruments, such as exhaust gas analyzers, including capturing realtime OBD signals, holding them until delayed events such as gas analyzer test results become available, then displaying the events on a common display as though available simultaneously in real time. The present invention further permits acquisition of communication links with external test equipment for which exact protocols and port configurations may not be uniquely specified. The firmware upgrade is downloadable to existing products.

  • Patent number: 6799108
Abstract: A control system and method maintains a constant engine idle speed during a garage shift of an automatic transmission-equipped vehicle with a torque converter. An engine control module or other processor identifies when transmission input clutch fill occurs. The engine control module increases engine output based on the transmission input clutch fill and before a decrease in engine idle speed occurs. The engine control module latches a turbine speed and a speed ratio (turbine speed/engine speed). The engine control module declares transmission input clutch fill if the latched turbine speed minus a current turbine speed is greater than the first calibration constant or if the latched speed ratio minus a current speed ratio is greater than the second calibration constant. The engine control module increases the engine output after waiting a first time delay after the transmission clutch fill.
