  • Patent number: 10837554
Abstract: A piston ring is made from a copper-containing alloy. This material permits the top compression ring of a piston to be moved closer to the piston crown, reducing crevice volume and reducing the tendency for pre-ignition. Ignition timing advance can be realized by installing the rings and letting the ECU advance the timing as the sensors allow, increasing efficiency. Also, shorter pistons and longer connecting rods are possible. The shorter pistons reduces the reciprocated mass in the engine and the longer connecting rods reduce the frictional loss caused by radial forces pushing the piston against the liner. Both reducing volume and tendency for pre-ignition increase engine efficiency.

  • Patent number: 10837555
Abstract: A gasket is provided with a tacky polyurethane or polyurea gel body and a metallic mesh skeleton where the skeleton has been coated with a conversion coating. The conversion coating helps reduce corrosion in the gasket and corrosion on the parts that place the gasket under compression, especially where an environment conducive to galvanic corrosion is present. This gasket may then be used in assemblies which include aircraft parts, which parts may be subject to extreme environmental conditions.

  • Patent number: 10830357
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to advanced materials, particularly single crystal grain structures including the formation of single crystal grain structures. Single crystal grain structures offer improved mechanical properties when used with individual components. Improving mechanical properties is favorable for components that are used in applications with high temperature, pressure, and stress. In these applications, mechanical failure is extremely undesirable. Individual components, such as seals, can be designed with a single crystal grain structure in a preferred direction. By selecting a preferred direction, and orienting the single crystal grain structure accordingly, the single crystal grain structure can improve the component's mechanical properties. Single crystal grain structure seals and the method of forming the seals, therefore, offer various improvements to individual components, specifically when the components are designed for high temperature, pressure, and stress applications.

  • Patent number: 10830354
Abstract: A protection system for preventing foreign material from lodging in a channel between and/or damage to adjacent ceramic core features during a core processing operation is disclosed. The system includes a gasket sized and shaped to self-lock within the channel and prevent foreign material from lodging within the channel during the core processing operation. A method may include determining a geometrical characteristic of the channel and adjacent ceramic core feature; fabricating a gasket to fit and self-lock within the channel; positioning the gasket within the channel; and performing the core processing operation. The gasket prevents the foreign material from lodging in the channel, reducing subsequent damage to the ceramic core compared to the channel without the gasket.

  • Patent number: 10731759
Abstract: The present disclosure provides a sealing ring assembly having a sealing ring and a reinforcement, configured to seal a high-pressure region from a lower pressure region of a piston and cylinder device. The sealing ring may be segmented, and a metal layer, wire, or other reinforcement may be affixed to the ring. The reinforcement is placed into tension against the sealing ring, which is correspondingly placed into compression. The composite structure of a relatively brittle sealing ring and reinforcement provides for reduced tensile loads in the sealing ring, thus extending life and reducing the likelihood of failure. The brittle portion of the sealing ring assembly may include a polymer or ceramic such as graphite, which is relatively less strong in tension than compression.
