The reinforcement ring may be one of i) coupled to the at least one sealing lip, and ii) embedded into the ring body. The reinforcement ring may include laminated carbon fibres and have a modulus of elasticity E2. The ring body may be composed of a plastic having a modulus of elasticity E1. The sealing ring may also have a ratio of the modulus of elasticity E2 to the modulus of elasticity E1 (E2/E1) that is approximately 150 to 300.

A plurality of hydro-pad recesses are formed radially inwardly from the peripheral edge of one of the seal faces at the pressure side of the seal assembly at peripherally spaced intervals and a plurality of feeder grooves are formed radially inwardly from the same peripheral edge of the seal face between at least some hydro-pad recesses. The radial extent of the feeder grooves is longer than the radial extent of the hydro-pad recesses. In one form a feeder groove is disposed between adjacent hydro-pad recesses. In another form a feeder groove is disposed between adjacent pairs of hydro-pad recesses.

A stiffness relief groove extends inwardly from the inner ring surface and circumferentially around the center axis and forms an annular spring zone of reduced material thickness to compensate for the varying of the path of the sealing face. One machine system application includes a final drive in a ground-engaging machine.

The invention comprises of a retainer, a seal, and a seal pre-load structural ring. A second embodiment comprises of a composite gasket blank, comprising of a retainer and a seal, and a seal pre-load structural ring. The seal outer diameter surface and the retainer inner diameter surface are joined by thermal fusion bonding. The invention may further comprise one or more gasket seating stress stabilizers and/or a centering ring.

    Abstract: The present disclosure provides a sealing ring assembly having a sealing ring and a reinforcement, configured to seal a high-pressure region from a lower pressure region of a piston and cylinder device. The sealing ring may be segmented, and a metal layer, wire, or other reinforcement may be affixed to the ring. The reinforcement is placed into tension against the sealing ring, which is correspondingly placed into compression. The composite structure of a relatively brittle sealing ring and reinforcement provides for reduced tensile loads in the sealing ring, thus extending life and reducing the likelihood of failure. The brittle portion of the sealing ring assembly may include a polymer or ceramic such as graphite, which is relatively less strong in tension than compression.
