Patent number: 4710538Abstract: A process for the gas phase production of a sticky, but fluidizable, polymer comprising (i) introducing at least one gaseous monomer, which is a precursor for the polymer, into a bed of particles located in a fluidized bed reactor at a velocity sufficient to cause the particles to separate and act as a fluid; (ii) introducing into the bed a catalyst adapted to cause the monomer to polymerize; (iii) contacting the catalyst with the monomer at a temperature below the sticking temperature of the polymer and at a temperature and pressure sufficient to polymerize the monomer in the presence of the catalyst whereby the polymer is produced; and (iv) passing the polymer from the fluidized bed reactor into at least one fluid bed reactor wherein a fluidizing gas is passed through a bed of particles at a velocity sufficient to cause the particles to separate and act as a fluid; the polymer is passed through the fluid bed reactor in an essentially plug flow mode; and the polymer is maintained in an agitated state.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1986Date of Patent: December 1, 1987Assignee: Union Carbide CorporationInventor: Robert J. Patent number: 4525558Abstract: A Ziegler type supported catalytic component for polymerization of an .alpha.-olefin is prepared by allowing an organo-magnesium compound expressed by a generic formula of R'MgX' (wherein R' represents a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms and X' either a halogen atom chosen out of chlorine, bromine and iodine or a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms) to react with carbon tetrahalide in the presence of an electron donor compound to obtain a solid product through a solid-liquid separation process; by heat treating the separated solid product with a carbon halide; by treating the heat treated solid product with phenols at 90.degree. to 180.degree. C.; and by treating this phenol treated product further with a halogenated titanium compound. Homo- or co-polymerization of an .alpha.-olefin is carried out in the presence of a catalyst composition consisting of the above catalytic component and an organo-aluminum compound. With this catalytic component, stereospecific polymerization of an .alpha.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 1984Date of Patent: June 25, 1985Assignee: Toyo Stauffer Chemical Co., Ltd.Inventors: Masaru Takitani, Shizuo Tomiyasu, Keikichi Baba

Patent number: 4525557Abstract: A process for the polymerization of ethylene using as the catalyst a novel solid catalytic complex comprising Mg, Si, and either Ti or V. An organoaluminum co-catalyst is also employed. The novel catalytic complex is prepared by a process which comprises:(a) reacting a silanol having the formula ##STR1## where R, R' and R" can be the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of aliphatic hydrocarbons having from 2 to 12 carbon atoms or phenyl or substituted phenyl where such substituents have from one to three alkyl groups, and alkyl group having from one to four carbon atoms and where R" can additionally be selected from --OH, with a magnesium dialkyl where each alkyl group can have from one to 12 carbon atoms to form a first reaction product;(b) reacting said first reaction product with trichlorosilane to form a second reaction product; and(c) reacting said second reaction product with a metal compound having the formula:MeX.sub.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1984Date of Patent: June 25, 1985Assignee: Gulf Oil CorporationInventors: William J. Patent number: 4505878Abstract: In a continuous friction-actuated process for the extrusion of copper, a passageway 3 is formed between an arcuate first member and a second member in the form of a wheel 1 having a circumferential groove 2 formed in its peripheral surface into which groove the first member projects. The wheel is rotated and metal is fed into the passageway at one end and extrudes from the passageway through at least one die orifice 6 located in or adjacent to an abutment member 5 extending across the passageway at the other end thereof. The abutment member is of substantially smaller cross-section than the passageway so as to leave a substantial gap between the abutment member and the groove.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1982Date of Patent: March 19, 1985Assignee: BICC Public Limited CompanyInventors: John B.
