  • Patent number: 9084201
Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate power headroom management in a wireless communication system. As described herein, a predefined relationship between locations along a system frequency band and corresponding power backoff parameters is utilized to minimize spurious emissions outside the system frequency band and/or excessive interference by, for example, associating locations near one or more edges of the permitted frequency band with substantially high power backoff parameters. As further described herein, the predefined relationship can be known a priori to the base station and the mobile terminal.

  • Patent number: 9078204
Abstract: A base station includes an obtaining unit and an instructing unit. The obtaining unit obtains, from another base station that communicates with a mobile device, a propagation delay amount between the other base station and the mobile device. When a propagation delay amount between the base station and the mobile device which is based on the propagation delay amount obtained by the obtaining unit is present within a predetermined range from a boundary of a detecting window that is used in detecting a preamble sequence transmitted from the mobile device, the instructing unit instructs the mobile device to stop the transmission of the preamble sequence corresponding to another detecting window that lies adjacent across the boundary.

  • Patent number: 9072060
Abstract: A network determines that a first radio node communicating on a radio resource with a second radio node is interfering with a third radio node communicating on the radio resource with the network. The network manages the interference by controlling transmit power of at least one of the first radio node and the third radio node. It may be by sending a command that indicates an amount by which the first or second radio node is to decrease its transmit power; and/or that indicates an amount by which the third radio node is to boost its transmit power. The network can measure a sounding signal it triggers from the first radio node, measure and compare to a threshold that guarantees a QoS for the third radio node, and compute appropriate backoff or boost values. The first and second radio nodes may be using device-to-device communications or a femto network.

  • Patent number: 9072076
Abstract: A method is provided in a base station for handling a request from a first user equipment for accessing a service in a radio communications network. The method comprises the steps of receiving a first time interval of an incoming signal comprises a first signal sent from the first user equipment and a second signal sent from the second user equipment, interpreting the first signal as being a possible service access request message preamble, and sending an acknowledgement, that the preamble is detected, to the first user equipment. The method comprises the further steps of delaying the first time interval of the incoming signal, identifying the second signal in the first time interval of the incoming signal during the delay, washing the identified second signal away from the first time interval of the incoming signal during the delay, and deciding whether the possible preamble is a real preamble or not, by analyzing the washed incoming signal.

  • Patent number: 9037175
Abstract: A local radio access information transmitter (LRAIT) may be used in a communications area serviced by multiple different radio access technologies (RATs) allocated to different radio resources in different locations in the communications area. Each RAT is associated with RAT radio transceiver(s) for serving UEs in the communications area. The LRAIT is in addition to the RAT transceivers and located near a hotspot service area in the communications area. The LRAIT determines local radio access information (LRAI) including different RATs available in the hotspot service area and frequenc(ies) of operation allocated to each RAT in the hotspot service area, sends a registration message to a wide area radio access information controller, and based on a response therefrom, determines what radio resources to use to transmit the LRAI signals. The LRAIT transmits the LRAI signals for receipt by UEs in the hotspot service area using those radio resources.

  • Patent number: 9014618
Abstract: A cellular telecommunications network base station repeater for a mobile terminal in a network having a power control function causes, during an active communication session, mobile terminal uplink transmit power to decrease in response to an increase in signal strength of the received uplink signal. The gain of the repeater is increased in response to an increase in the uplink signal received at the repeater above a threshold, and subsequently decreasing the gain until the measured power in the received uplink signal exceeds the threshold. Due to the power control function, increasing the gain causes the transmit power of the mobile terminal, and hence the uplink signal received at the repeater, to decrease. Decreasing the gain causes the transmit power, and hence the received uplink signal, to increase. The threshold not being exceeded is indicative of the communication no longer being active, and the repeater will eventually deactivate.

  • Patent number: 8958758
Abstract: According to one exemplary embodiment, a communication apparatus includes: a measurement module which measures reception power of each field; a determination module which determines whether the reception power is within a range; a calculator which calculates a gain using the reception power if the reception power is not within the range; an adjuster which adjusts a field according to one of an initial gain and the calculated gain; a selector which selects a field length according to the number of field adjustments by the adjuster; and a transmitter which transmits information regarding the field length. When the number of the adjustments is lower than a first threshold value, the selector selects a first value, and when the number of the adjustments is equal to or higher than the first threshold value, the selector selects a second value that is higher than the first value, as the field length.

  • Patent number: 8928526
Abstract: Techniques for monitoring transmission performance of a satellite communications systems are provided, including techniques for measuring the primary contributors to the end-to-end SNR, including the uplink SNR, the downlink SNR, and the C/I for each link in the network. These individual measurements are used to estimate satellite effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP), satellite antenna gain-to-noise-temperature (G/T), and loss due to an Earth Terminal pointing error. The EIRP, satellite antenna G/T and loss due to Earth terminal pointing error may then be used to determine operating parameters for the satellite communications network that enable the network to operate more efficiently.

  • Patent number: 8886148
Abstract: In a signal-based gain control scheme, one or more gain levels used for processing signals are selected based on characteristics of previously received signals. For example, different gain levels may be used to receive sets of signals whereupon certain characteristics of the received sets of signals are determined. One or more gain levels are then selected based on these characteristics whereby another signal is processed based on the selected gain level(s). In some aspects, the signal-based gain control scheme may be employed to facilitate two-way ranging operations between two devices. For example, leading edge detection may involve determining a characteristic of a received signal, determining a threshold based on the characteristic, and identifying a leading edge associated with the received signal based on the threshold. In some aspects, the signal-based gain control scheme may be employed in an ultra-low power pulse-based communication system (e.g., in ultra-wideband communication devices).

  • Patent number: 8818450
Abstract: An electronic device such as a portable electronic device may have an antenna and associated wireless communications circuitry. A sensor such as a proximity sensor may be used to detect when the electronic device is in close proximity to a user's head. • Patent number: 8805427
Abstract: A computing system in which devices communicate wirelessly as secondary users in a band assigned to primary users. The computers communicate using new signals developed to reduce disruption to primary users of the band. The new signals may be produced by sensing, or otherwise determining, signals used by primary users and developing signals using a modulation scheme or other signal parameters that provides little disruption to primary users. These techniques make available to users unused and/or underused portions of the radio spectrum, such as whitespaces between television channels. The new signals may be generated by software defined radios within the computing devices or by switching between modulation schemes supported by conventional wireless network interface card.
