  • Patent number: 6640147
Abstract: Late audio buffer processing for intelligently muting audio output when audio buffers are not read fast enough from disk into digital signal processing (DSP) memory. Given a playback audio recorder, each channel of audio is associated with a forward and a reverse late threshold signals which are enabled when the processing of an audio buffer for that channel is delayed. When an audio buffer for that channel is delayed, the late threshold signal sets in motion the muting of that specific audio channel for a predetermined amount of time. If and when the system catches up, normal playback resumes. Otherwise, the channel stays muted.

  • Patent number: 6636604
Abstract: An method and a device for echo suppression in a handsfree apparatus, particularly for a telephone is disclosed. With the aid of a control unit, control signals are generated from the signal of the far-end subscriber, the output signal of the loudspeaker-room-microphone system and the output signal of an adaptive filter used as reference, the control signals having an amplitude and a time response dependent on the speech mode. Using the control signals, the amplifications VE, VS of controllable amplifiers disposed in the receiving and transmitting paths are adapted to the speech mode, thus reducing the residual echo. The stepless transition of the amplifications from a quiescent value to a value attenuated with the factor and having an exponential time characteristic in response to a change of speech mode, provides an impression of natural speech.

  • Patent number: 6636609
Abstract: A method and apparatus for automatically compensating a sound volume are disclosed. The method includes the steps of determining whether a channel conversion key and an audio input switching key are inputted, producing an energy of an audio signal when the channel conversion key is inputted, and comparing an energy value of the audio signal detected for a predetermined time period with an energy value obtained from a previous step thereof and compensating for as much volume as a difference obtained by the comparison. The method together with the apparatus considers a symmetrical characteristic of an audio signal, calculates a voice energy with regard to a half signal of the audio signal, converts the calculated signal to a simplified value, and automatically compensates for the volume accordingly, thereby removing redundant manual steps.

  • Patent number: 6633648
Abstract: The invention is a method of creating an enlarged listening sweet spot for multiloudspeaker audio reproduction. The method employs a plurality of audio drivers displaced generally in a horizontal dimension for a vertically oriented head of a listener, the drivers operating over a plurality of different passbands. Higher frequency drivers are located closer to one another and displaced more towards a center line of the listening space than lower frequency drivers, thereby causing a smaller change in acoustic ear signals for listeners seated away from the designed-for listening position, but without causing increased low frequency signal capacity requirements for phantom images generally outside the array. Specially adapted signal processing accounting for the layout of the various drivers and their associated crossover networks is employed to create desired audio images.

  • Patent number: 6631193
Abstract: A method of processing left and right audio signals is disclosed which reproduces the illusion of a center channel while achieving a perception by the listener of a wider speaker separation. This method is partly obtained by altering the spectral response of the left and right speaker signals to obtain left and right sets of odd and even Fourier Transforms having certain characteristics. These processed signals are re-combined with the unaltered left and right signals to produce an expanded separation image that appears to extend beyond the physical location of the actual left and right loudspeakers, and to simultaneously centralize center channel signals to a point located between the loudspeakers.

  • Patent number: 6628780
Abstract: A network-based CODEC (coder-decoder) includes an echo canceler. This CODEC recognizes the presence of a data call by detecting predefined signaling portions of a modem handshaking process. For each detected data call, the CODEC uses a stored channel model for performing echo cancellation during the data call. The CODEC trains off-line during selected segments of the modem call and then stores the new channel model for use in a future data call.

  • Patent number: 6628791
Abstract: An electrostatic loudspeaker requires a high voltage DC bias power supply to bias the stators and diaphragms of electrostatic speakers. A self biased power supply eliminates the need for an external power supply by deriving a high voltage bias from the stator AC signal voltages which have been rectified and run from a high voltage tap and/or through a voltage multiplier which has a voltage limiting means.

  • Patent number: 6628779
Abstract: A method and system for providing suppression of near-end speech energy for tone signal detectors. In accordance with the invention a system or device is connected between the tip and ring on a subscriber loop, the subscriber loop being connected to office equipment and that subscriber's station set. The system also includes a receive interface that is connected to either a tone signal detector or a frequency shift keying modulator. The system achieves speech cancellation by forming a Wheatstone bridge with a mirror circuit possessing a scaled image of the loop and office equipment impedance. In one embodiment of the invention the Wheatstone bridge is formed using the combined impedance of the loop and office equipment as the impedance that is to be matched by a set of balanced networks included within the system.
