  • Patent number: 4198882
Abstract: Transmission gear change characteristic curves, relating speed and loading, are stored in a memory. The digitally stored data are processed in a data processing unit connected to a synchronization and logic unit which controls a gear change control stage, actually controlling the gear shifting. The data processing unit compares output speed of the transmission with the characteristic curves stored in the memory relating speed and loading, and optimum transmission gear range, while additionally considering load signals derived from the engine to which the transmission is connected. Preferably, the entire unit is synchronized by output pulses derived from the output speed of the transmission, with prohibited states and gear changes being provided for to prevent shifting if the actual speed exceeds or recedes below critical levels.

  • Patent number: 4196644
Abstract: A power transmission having three distinct ranges: (1) hydrostatic, (2) simple power-split hydromechanical, and (3) compound power-split hydromechanical. A single compound planetary assembly has two sun gears, two ring gears, and a single carrier with two sets of elongated planet gears. The two sun gears may be identical in size, and the two ring gears may be identical in size. A speed-varying module in driving relationship to the first sun gear is clutchable, in turn, to (1) the input shaft and (2) the second sun gear. The speed-varying means may comprise a pair of hydraulic units hydraulically interconnected so that one serves as a pump while the other serves as a motor and vice versa, one of the units having a variable stroke and being the one clutchable to either the input shaft or to the second sun gear. The other unit, which may have a fixed stroke, is connected in driving relation to the first sun gear.

  • Patent number: 4194416
Abstract: When the engine runs on all cylinders thereof, a diaphragm device for a hydraulic pressure regulating valve will operate in response to a pressure difference between the atmospheric pressure and intake vacuum within an intake manifold of the engine. A control system includes a solenoid valve which, when the engine runs on selected cylinders of all, will apply vacuum within a source of a predetermined vacuum to the diaphragm device. According to one preferred embodiment, the diaphragm device has a single chamber and the solenoid valve is adapted to selectively apply the induction vacuum and the predetermined vacuum to the single chamber. According to another preferred embodiment, the diaphragm device has a first chamber in communication with the intake manifold and a second chamber and the solenoid valve is adapted to selectively apply the atmospheric pressure and the predetermined vacuum to the second chamber.

  • Patent number: 4194417
Abstract: Fuel economy of a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine has been improved by allowing, when a vehicle is at a standstill, the engine to run on selected cylinders of all. The idling operation of the engine on the selected cylinders has been made smooth by the provision of a switch valve in a control circuit of the transmission. With the switch valve, as soon as an accelerator pedal is released when the vehicle is at a standstill, hydraulic fluid will be drained from the control circuit to render a gearing of the transmission in a neutral condition even if a manually selector valve in the control circuit is held in a drive range position. This prevents transmission of load to the engine through the hydrokinetic unit which otherwise would occur when the manually selector valve is in the drive range position.

  • Patent number: 4192199
Abstract: A hydrostatic transmission has an input connected to a prime mover and an output connected through a speed-change transmission to a load. A control element of this transmission is urged in a direction tending to increase the transmission ratio by a control cylinder pressurized from a hydraulic tachometer operated by the transmission input, and is urged in the opposite direction to decrease the ratio by a regulating cylinder connected via a feed line to the hydraulic network interconnecting the pump and motor of the transmission. During speed change the two cylinders are depressurized and the regulating cylinder is isolated from the network.

  • Patent number: 4187739
Abstract: A hydrostatic torque converter has a hydrostatic transmission and a stepped or gear transmission shiftable under load by selective actuation of respective clutches assigned to the gear trains. The variable-displacement pump is controlled hydrostatically to follow the switchover between clutches with the control pressure to the servocontrolling the displacement of the pump being regulated in response to the fluid pressures of the clutches through respective pressure modulation valves. As a consequence, the hydrostatic transmission compensates for the jump resulting from the shifting of the steps of the gear transmission and follows the stepping of the gear transmission outside the forced actuation of the transmission (positive switching overlap of the shifting clutches) in dependence upon the progress of load transfer from the released to the engaged clutch.

  • Patent number: 4183265
Abstract: A power operated wrench having a clutch means disposed to effect relative rotation between the drive means and the output spindle. The clutch means cooperates with the gear reduction system to allow the drive means to continue rotating thereby allowing repeated application of the maximum torque output of the drive means. The clutch means further effects a reduction of the system inertia which must be absorbed by a fastener after high speed run down and thereby prevents overtorque.

  • Patent number: 4182196
Abstract: A mechanical throttle control mechanism is provided for the remote control of an internal combustion engine. The mechanism comprises a speed selector arm movable between first and second limit positions, a friction lock operably associated with the speed selector arm and an arrangement of links connecting the speed selector arm to the throttle lever of the engine. The links of the mechanism are so positioned to cause a decreasing moment arm on the speed selector arm as the speed selector arm is moved from its first position toward its second position which respectively corresponds to the shut-off and full-throttle positions of the throttle lever. This arrangement reduces the need experienced heretofore for high friction disc pressure to hold the speed selector arm in a desired position between its limit positions, resulting in less disc wear and less frequent friction spring adjustment.

  • Patent number: 4179953
Abstract: A gear transmission control device for a multiple-speed hub for a bicycle, in which an actuating arm is mounted to one end of a controller for the gear transmission of the hub, which arm is pivoted to a fixed member of the hub through a pivot and a control arm is pivoted to the pivot in the relation of being shiftable with respect to the actuating arm. An energy-storage spring is provided between both the arms, so that the control arm is shifted with respect to the actuating arm to energize the spring when the controller is subjected to a resistance in excess of a prescribed value. When the resistance is released the stored energy in the spring allows the actuating arm to swing, thereby changing the bicycle speed to a desirable speed-change stage.
