    Abstract: A needle-syringe assembly, operable in a normal mode and convertible to a retraction mode, comprises an elongated, generally cylindrical barrel, a plunger slidably mounted in the barrel, and a needle holder carrying a hollow needle on the distal end thereof. The barrel forms a hollow nozzle located at the distal end of the barrel. The plunger forms a coaxial cavity extending therethrough, and the plunger includes a helical slot exposing a proximal portion of the coaxial cavity. The needle holder is slidably mounted in the coaxial cavity of the plunger. During the normal mode, a distal portion of the needle holder is engaged within the nozzle by a taper lock. To switch from the normal mode to the retraction mode, the taper lock is disengaged by rotary movement of the plunger relative to the barrel.

The tube (12) has a wall which surrounds a plurality of longitudinally extending lumens. A suction lumen (22) is connected to a suction means located exteriorly in relation to the patient. There are one or more pores capable of delivering irrigation fluid and for syphoning the contents of the patient's intestine. An irrigation lumen (24) is connected to irrigation means (32) located exteriorly in relation to the patient. There are one or more openings extending from the suction lumen (22) to the irrigation lumen (24) for ducting irrigation fluid or gastrointestinal content and for avoiding plugging of the pores by particulate matter or by a stomach lining when the stomach is aspirated.

The system includes wire members that extend through a catheter wall that are used to pull a distal portion of the catheter tip causing controlled, predetermined bending at the tip. The steering system also contains control members which are located at a proximal portion of the catheter and are used to control the pull on the wire members. Steering enhancement members are also included in the steering system which facilitate the bending of the catheter wall.

    Abstract: An endoscopic surgical instrument 20 includes an irrigation port 21 and an evacuation port 22. Each port, 21 and 22, is connected through independent valves 23 and 24, respectively to a single access conduit 25. The connection between the valves 23 and 24 and conduit 25 is along connector tubes 23a and 24a. The access conduit 25 leads from the valves and their respective valve conduits to a probe connector 26. This probe connector 26 is designed to receive one end, the locating end 27, of a surgical probe 28 which would be used during microsurgical procedures. The surgical instrument 20 also includes a port 31 which allows the surgeon to insert microsurgical instrumentation (not shown) along the access conduit 25 and the bore of the hollow probe 28 to exit from the end 32 thereof. The port 31 should provide a fluid-tight seal when no microsurgical instrumentation is being used with the surgical instrument 20.

    Abstract: An easy operating, durable closure device for controlling the closure of a passageway in for example valves and the like used in medical applications. The device includes a cam surface arranged about the circumference of a resilient tubing member. Rotation of the cam controls the radial position of a compression member that compresses the tubing member to effect closure. Such a closure device, or a two-part rotary closure device in general, is constructed to receive an accessory component such as a syringe, the rotary connecting movement of which automatically opens the closure device. The device may be used as a torqugeable handle for a guidewire gripped in the passage. A large scale version of the device is joined to an introducer sheath, sized to pass an introducer catheter for e.g., a Green field filter, or to close upon a guidewire to prevent backflow of blood.

    Abstract: A blood sampling aspirator used to withdraw blood into vials for subsequent tests presents a hazard to personnel when withdrawing the hypodermic syringe because of the exposed needle. This invention encompasses an integral syringe design that allows for removal of the needle from the syringe even before the needle is withdrawn from the site of the needle puncture. The needle is contained within a ballistic type component which is withdrawn from the puncture site and from the syringe through the action of component elastic deflections and a force toggle mechanism without the use of coil spring devices. The needle is forcibly propelled into a tubular storage container toward the back of the syringe (toward the syringe operator and away from the patient). After the needle is propelled into the container it offers full protection from inadvertent needle punctures or scratches. The syringe, less the needle, can, if desired, be reused and another needle installed inside the syringe.

    Abstract: A needless injector having a liquid metering chamber with an outlet orifice, a piston slidable within the metering chamber, and a rod arranged to strike one end of the piston to force liquid through the outlet orifice. A cam follower is mounted at one end of the rod to ride on a cam that retracts the rod away from the piston. The injector is in two parts which are biassed away from each other. The front part of the injector carries the outlet orifice and the rear part carries the cam. Actuation occurs when the two parts of the injector are sufficiently urged towards each other by the user to actuate the cam to release the rod and thereby strike the piston and force liquid through the outlet orifice.
