Abstract: To aid a medical practitioner in positioning a surgical instrument or implant when performing surgery on or examining portions of a patient, patient data is developed which identifies the position and orientation of the portion to which surgical procedures or examinations are to be applied. The position and orientation of the instrument or implant is sensed and instrument data is developed from this sensing. The patient data is converted to objective signals to be displayed on a video display, and the instrument data is converted to instrument signals for presenting the position and orientation of the instrument or implant on the same display. Thus, by watching the display, the medical practitioner is aided in manipulating the insrument or implant relative to the portion.

Abstract: An automated, user-interactive procedure is used to obtain the right statements for computer software from the user in a way in which the statements elicited from the user are free from errors due to ambiguity, conflict, redundancy, inconsistency, and the like without compromise of user intent. The advanced integrated statements engineering system (AIRES) is an integrated environment, supporting and spanning the statements engineering life cycle. Each activity in the statements engineering life cycle is supported by a set of automated CASE tools, which taken together, comprise a suite of CASE tools in the AIRES environment. A primary feature of the assessment framework is a classification ectype (CE), which is a combination of operator controlled rules and tables to represent a category within a classification structure. CE-based statements assessment (CEBRA) provides automated support techniques to "recognize" and thus categorize English text.

The customer trusted agent provides electronic money purchase or sale information and an account credential to the merchant trusted agent, and the merchant trusted agent provides a receipt ticket to the customer trusted agent. The merchant trusted agent accesses an authorization network and initiates an authorization process using information from the electronic money purchase or sale information and the account credential.

Abstract: This invention discloses an electronic apparatus for processing language information of plural languages, on which an external memory device is detachably mounted, whereby specific character information stored in the memory device is displayed and desired character information therein can be selected and entered by a selector. A message is displayed at a predetermined timing of processing with an expression corresponding to the language information stored in the memory device. Control information stored in the memory device is utilized to display a function of language information processing activated, for example, at the start of power supply.

Abstract: In order to obtain an index which generally shows the work burden extent of various works carried out in an automobile assembling factory or the like, for each work content, the maximum muscle contraction ratio is measured after the work has been continued for 5 seconds, the work burden index (L) is calculated from the measured ratio value, and the equivalent work burden in a standard work is calculated from the calculated work burden index (L) for 5 seconds. The work burden index (TVAL) of actual work is calculated from the equivalent work burden and the actual work time. Suitably, a work routine plan is corrected such that the obtained TVAL is normalized with an apparatus comprising means for storing the equivalent work burden for each work content, means for displaying an image of the work content, and means for inputting work content parameter and so forth while watching the displayed image.

A system and method for carrying out self-administered surveys utilize a centralized survey data processor and a plurality of self-administered survey devices for storing survey data entered by respective respondents and wherein survey data is wirelessly transmitted from the plurality of self-administered survey devices to the centralized survey data processor.

Abstract: A system and method for assigning and scheduling resource requests to resource providers use a modified "best-first" search technique that combines optimization, artificial intelligence, and constraint-processing to arrive at near-optimal assignment and scheduling solutions. In response to changes in a dynamic resource environment, potential changes to an existing assignment set are evaluated in a search for a better solution. New calls are assigned and scheduled as they are received, and the assignment set is readjusted as the field service environment changes, resulting in global optimization. Each search operation is in response to either an incremental change to the assignment set such as adding a new resource request, removing a pending resource request, reassigning a pending resource request, or to a request for further evaluation. Thus, the search technique assumes that the existing assignment set is already optimized, and limits the task only to evaluating the effects of the incremental change.

Abstract: An electronic prescription creation system for use by professional prescribers at the point of care has a prescription division subsystem permitting creation of a single prescription to be automatically divided into two components for fulfilment of one portion quickly and locally at higher cost and of another portion by remote mail order taking more time but providing a cost saving for a major part of the prescription. The prescription creation system has an ability to access remote source databases for system presentation to the prescriber of relevant, authorized and current drug, drug formulary and patient history information, with dynamic creation of a transient virtual patient record, the information being presented to the prescriber before completion of the prescription, permitting enhancement of the quality of prescribing decisions.

Abstract: A customer contact management system is described. The system can be customized in order to provide custom contact types and sub-types for the types of contacts relating to individual customers, groups of customers, and business entities. User preferences may be defined to further customize the system to provide the most convenient and time efficient searching, entry, and response actions. Prior contacts can be searched and located by generating filter criteria through the order-independent selection of contact types, contact sub-types, customer identification, and customer contact dates. Records detailing the nature of the customer contact can be stored, whether the contact is user-initiated, system-initiated, or customer-initiated. Internal messages and scripted messages are provided to assist the user of the system in conducting customer service activities. The number and frequency of the internal and scripted messages can be altered according to the experience level of the user.

Abstract: The invention is a method and system which provides consultants, business process analysts, and application developers with a unified tool with which to conduct business process analysis, design, documentation and to generate business process definitions and workflow-enabled applications. The invention may be implemented using a software system which has two functional sets. One is a set of graphical tools that can be used by a developer or business analyst to map out business processes. The second is a set of tools that can be used to document and specify in detail the attributes of each workflow definition, including roles, cycle time, conditions, of satisfaction, cost and value, associated text, forms, application data as well as detail the attributes of links between workflows required to complete a business process map, and to generate a business process definition and a workflow-enabled application.

Abstract: A Point of Sale (POS) system includes a portable terminal for a customer and an adjustment POS terminal connected to the portable terminal in a retail store. The portable terminal includes an input unit for inputting article codes corresponding to goods selected by a customer and a local price look-up (PLU) file for storing main article codes. A retrieval unit retrieves the article information from the local PLU file in accordance with the article code input through the input unit, and a calculation unit performs calculation processes in accordance with the result of retrieval by the retrieval unit. A display unit then displays the article information and a result of calculation by the calculation unit. A storage unit stores the article information and a result of calculation by the calculation unit. A communication unit sends the article information which is temporarily stored in the storage unit to the adjustment POS terminal.

The display unit displays a first screen including icons corresponding to candidates. A voter operates the tablet unit to designate a candidate for whom he/she wants to vote. The election terminal apparatus discriminates the candidate designated by the voter, and causes the liquid crystal display unit to display an image for allowing the voter to input the candidate name or the like with handwriting. When the voter handwrites the candidate name or the like on the table unit, the election terminal apparatus performs character recognition with respect to the handwritten pattern. When a candidate specified by the recognized characters coincides with the candidate designated first, the election terminal apparatus increments the vote count of the candidate by one.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for associating scheduled events with other scheduled events and with electronic documents is provided. A user interacts with user interface controls on a computer display to specify a plurality of scheduled events. The user interface controls allow the user to specify that one or more electronic documents are related to each event, and that one or more other events are related to each event. Data representing the events and the associations between the events and electronic documents is stored on a storage device. User interface controls are provided which allow a user to see a list of the events and/or the documents that are related to a particular event. When a user changes the schedule of an event that has related events, a warning indication is generated to remind the user that the schedules of the related events may also have to be changed.

Abstract: A system and method provides for enabling on-line transactional services among sellers and buyers having no previous relationship with each other. The system includes a financial clearinghouse for receiving a request for goods or services from a buyer and making a real-time determination of a risk classification of the buyer utilizing an on-line repository of credit information. The financial clearinghouse determines a risk-based discount fee as a function of the buyer's risk classification in order to establish a payment amount to the seller from the clearinghouse. If the transaction is authorized by the financial clearinghouse, the financial clearinghouse transmits the payment amount to the seller and transmits an invoice to the buyer for the purchase price of the transaction. The system can also include a broker coupled to the financial clearinghouse for providing an on-line order acceptance and processing capability between the buyers and sellers.

Abstract: In a self-service system of selling travel-related services or products by means of an interactive travel service system functioning like a travel agent, to simplify the search process by the system and the decision process by the user, the user is first queried as to travel knowledge, such as whether the user is a first-time visitor or is otherwise familiar with the travel destination, and as to personal attribute such as family orientation, age and preference for airlines, lodgings, car rental companies, price range and lifestyle. In accordance with the travel knowledge and attributes inputted electronically by the user, one or more recommendations or a whole listing will be presented for selection by the user. To simplify the process, the user is asked to input the relevant dates and the inventory database is searched so that only available choices will be presented.
