Abstract: Devices and related methods are disclosed herein that generally involve detecting and interpreting gestures made by a user to generate user input information for use by a digital data processing system. In one embodiment, a device includes first and second sensors that observe a workspace in which user gestures are performed. The device can be set to a keyboard input mode, a number pad input mode, or a mouse input mode based on the positioning of the user's hands. Subsequent gestures made by the user can be interpreted as keyboard inputs, mouse inputs, etc., using observed characteristics of the user's hands and various motion properties of the user's hands. These observed characteristics can also be used to implement a security protocol, for example by identifying authorized users by the anatomical properties of their hands or the behavioral properties exhibited by the user while gesturing.

  • Patent number: 10976814
Abstract: A method of tracking an eye of a user includes generating an infrared light, scanning the infrared light over the eye, and detecting reflections of the infrared light from the eye over an eye tracking period. A plurality of glints is identified from the reflections of the infrared light detected. A glint center position of each glint in a glint space is determined and transformed to a gaze position in a display space. At least once during the eye tracking period, an image of the eye is reconstructed from a portion of the reflections of the infrared light detected. A pupil is detected from the image, and a pupil center position is determined. A glint-pupil vector is determined from the pupil center position and the glint center position of at least one glint corresponding in space to the pupil. The glint space is recalibrated based on the glint-pupil vector.

  • Patent number: 10971074
Abstract: An electronic device may include a display such as a light-emitting diode display. The electronic device may be a head-mounted device that provides a virtual reality or augmented reality environment to a user. To reduce artifacts in the display, a display may be operable in both a normal scanning mode and a partial scanning mode. In the normal scanning mode, every row of the display may be enabled to emit light in each frame. In the partial scanning mode, only a subset of the rows of the display may be enabled to emit light in each frame. The display may have a higher refresh rate in the partial scanning mode than in the normal scanning mode. To ensure uniform transistor stress across the display, the scanning driver for the display may scan the disabled rows in the partial scanning mode even though the rows will not be used to emit light.

  • Patent number: 10936083
Abstract: A self-powered module for gesture recognition is presented that utilizes small, low-cost photodiodes for both energy harvesting and gesture sensing. Operating in the photovoltaic mode, photodiodes harvest energy from ambient light. In the meantime, the instantaneously harvested power from individual photodiodes is monitored and exploited as a clue for sensing finger gestures in proximity. Harvested power from all photodiodes is aggregated to drive the whole gesture-recognition module including a micro-controller running the recognition algorithm. A robust, lightweight algorithm is provided to recognize finger gestures in the presence of ambient light fluctuations. Two prototypes are fabricated to facilitate user's interaction with smart glasses and smart watches.
