Patent number: 4679103Abstract: A digital servo control system for a data recording disk file receives as input a digital head position error signal (PES) and a digital signal corresponding to the head actuator input signal, and outputs a digital control signal. The control signal is integrated and amplified to provide the input signal to the actuator. The control signal is calculated from estimated values of absolute head position, head velocity and the equivalent actuator input signal required to compensate for constant or very low frequency bias forces. The estimated values are functions of respective predicted values, which in turn are functions of, among other things, constants representing the digital sampling time and physical parameters of the actuator. The updating of the estimated values from the respective predicted values is made with the use of an error term, which is the error between the measured absolute head position and the predicted absolute head position.Type: GrantFiled: April 29, 1986Date of Patent: July 7, 1987Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventor: Michael L. Patent number: 4677502Abstract: Tape flutter, caused by head-to-tape stick-slip action, is suppressed in tape transport apparatus of the turnaround type having a single, speed-regulated capstan for metering magnetic tape into and out of a magnetic transducer station. To that end, a low-inertia motor, coupled to a turnaround roller, includes a tachometer for monitoring the instantaneous speed of the roller, and thereby the speed of the capstan tape loop. A phase lock loop, coupled to the tachometer, produces a composite signal including a nominal component corresponding to a desired tape speed, and an error component corresponding to tape flutter in the capstan loop. A bandpass filter, coupling the output of the phase lock loop and the motor, causes the motor to adjust the speed of the turnaround roller in phase opposition to the error component, to thereby suppress flutter in the capstan tape loop.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 1986Date of Patent: June 30, 1987Assignee: Datatape, IncorporatedInventor: Lewis B. Patent number: 4675760Abstract: A reference track is recorded in a longitudinal direction on a recording medium. During recording of an information signal along parallel tracks on the medium a deviation of the reference track in a transverse direction from its nominal position with respect to the medium transport is detected by one or more sensor heads mounted in a fixed relationship with respect to the medium transport. A positionably mounted data head is moved in transverse direction in accordance with the sense and magnitude of the detected deviation, thereby maintaining the data head in a known geometric relationship with the reference track during the recording process. During playback the same reference track may be utilized to follow the thusly recorded parallel tracks.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 1986Date of Patent: June 23, 1987Assignee: Ampex CorporationInventors: George A. Patent number: 4675761Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed for positioning magnetic heads relative to the recording tracks of a recording medium such as a floppy disk having circular, concentric recording tracks formed thereon. The magnetic heads are mounted on a head carriage, and the head carriage is moved, in response to received command pulses, so that the heads are moved linearly, by step increments, along a radius of the floppy disk. The heads are thereby moved across the spaced tracks on the disk, with each incremental movement of the heads being a distance less than the distance between the tracks, and being, for example, one-half or one-fourth of the total distance between tracks. Acoustic noise due to head movement is minimized by moving the heads by increments less than the distance between the tracks, with such movement avoiding exciting the resonances of the head moving apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 1986Date of Patent: June 23, 1987Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: William H.
