Patent number: 5058892Abstract: A substantially improved table soccer/fussball game playing ball is fabricated by molding an oversized spherical blank entirely from a single thermoplastic material, preferably a urethane material having a hardness within the approximate range of from about 50 Shore D to about 60 Shore D. The oversized molded blank is then subjected to a precision surface machining process, preferably using a centerless grinding machine, to reduce its diameter to a desired finished magnitude and to provide the resulting finished playing ball with a very precisely spherical shape. Compared to conventionally fabricated table soccer playing balls, the machined, single thermoplastic material playing ball provides a variety of advantages including a truer playing roll, considerably more durability and resistance to surface wear, and the desirable ability to retain its "like-new" playing characteristics for a much longer period of time.Type: GrantFiled: January 15, 1991Date of Patent: October 22, 1991Inventor: Calvin E. Patent number: 5022656Abstract: A training device for improving one's putting stroke has a long, slender rigid bar attached to the shaft of a putter. The bar is rigidly attached to extend rearward in an orientation perpendicular to the face of the head of the putter. A resilient, flexible line is attached to the bar. The line has one end adapted to be anchored to a stationary point, to maintain proper alignment of the putter face during a practice putting stroke. In another embodiment, a base is fixedly attached to the shaft, and a telescoping tube is hingedly connected to the base to allow vertical movement, but prevent lateral movement or rotation of the shaft during the practice stroke. In another embodiment, a base includes a flat end flange for vertical pivotal attachment by a clevis hinge to a long rigid rod, which passes through a stationary eye. Also included is a movable L-shaped member for establishing a proper angle for holding the putter.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 1990Date of Patent: June 11, 1991Inventor: Ralph Tiller

Patent number: 4949971Abstract: An improved golf training aid is provided having a rotatable T-shaped pointer mounted to a block. The block has two sections that are fastened together by screws. The screws tighten or loosen the grip on the golf club shaft. The T-shaped pointer is mounted in another slit passageway, one leg acting as the axis of rotation. Screws also act to hold the pointer in place. When not in use, the pointer can be rotated up for easy storage.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1989Date of Patent: August 21, 1990Inventor: C. J. Thornton

Patent number: 4834387Abstract: The club provides a larger permissible area of impact for striking a golf ball accurately in both direction and distance by having a lightweight upper section and a heavy sole plate section giving a centre of gravity which is low down in relation to the height of the head of the club and which is positioned towards the toe end of the head remote from the entry point of the shaft which is towards the heel of the club. The position of the centre of gravity and the swing weight of the club are adjustable by means of additional weights which may be attached within the hollow upper part of the club.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 1987Date of Patent: May 30, 1989Inventors: Brian J. Patent number: 4824116Abstract: In production of a wood-type golf club head having a rigid shell, metal pieces are dispersed in the matrix of crude foamable synthetic resin filled in the interior of a crude rigid shell for long maintenance in position of the center of gravity of the product despite shocks at shooting balls. The golf club head is formed of a hollow shell having a sole side provided with a first opening. A lid is received within the first opening to form an enclosure. The lid includes a second opening in direct communication with the interior of the hollow shell. The synthetic resin is provided within the interior of the hollow shell through the second opening within the lid. The synthetic resin forms a foam core upon application of heat to the resin.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 1987Date of Patent: April 25, 1989Assignee: Yamaha CorporationInventors: Itsushi Nagamoto, Tatsuo Nakanishi, Ryohei Tajima

Patent number: 4813677Abstract: A golf ball having a plurality of different kinds of dimples formed on a spherical surface thereof is disclosed. In one embodiment, a plurality of four different kinds of dimples is formed on the spherical surface of the golf ball. The differences between the kinds of dimples can be a difference in diameter, in depth, or a combination of diameter and depth. The ratio of the product of the diameter and the depth of the largest dimple, to the product of the diameter and depth of the smallest dimple, is in the range of 1.5 to 2.0. Smooth portions are formed on the remainder of the spherical surface to such a size that a dimple having an area larger than an average area calculated from the respective areas of each kind of dimple constituting the plurality of different kinds cannot be formed. The total number of dimples ranges from 300 to 560, and there is a maximum of one great circle zone not traversing a part of any dimple.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 1986Date of Patent: March 21, 1989Assignee: Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd.Inventors: Kengo Oka, Kaname Yamada

Patent number: 4787636Abstract: A golf club head includes a body having a front face which is adapted to engage a golf ball, the front face being disposed at an acute angle relative to vertical when a player addresses the ball by viewing the golf club head when the golf club head is in a position to engage the golf ball. The front face has an upper edge portion which is chamfered to form a chamfer face which is disposed at an obtuse angle relative to the front face. The chamfer face has an upper edge which defines the upper boundary of the head body while the front face has a lower edge which defines the lower boundary of the head body. The chamfer face and the front face are disposed such that when a player addresses the ball, the player perceives the plane extending between the upper and lower edges as the ball-engaging plane such that the player thereby perceives the loft angle to be greater than the actual loft angle, the actual loft angle being the acute angle of the front face relative to vertical when a player addresses the ball.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 1986Date of Patent: November 29, 1988Assignee: Kabushiki Kaisha Honma Gorufu Kurabu Seisakusho (Honma Golf Club Mfg., Co., Ltd.)Inventor: Yukihiro Honma

Patent number: 4676508Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining the point of impact of a golf club head on a golf ball such as one having an outer coating of polyurethane resin containing aluminosilicate and titanium dioxide, such as for use in improving a golfer's swing. A golf club head is provided having an impact surface on which an indication of the impact of the head against the ball is retained subsequent to the impact. In the disclosed embodiment, the impact surface portion is formed of fiberglass fibers, carbon fibers, and a binder. The indication is erasable as by the golfer wiping his finger across the thusly marked impact surface. A golf club head composition and golf ball coating cooperatively providing the desired impact indication are disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1986Date of Patent: June 30, 1987Inventor: Mike M. Patent number: 4558863Abstract: A method of configuring a stepped, cylindrical golf club shaft to achieve an optimum shaft impact angle is diclosed. A predetermined portion in the middle of the shaft is selected as are the number of steps to be used, the wall thickness of each step and the outer diameter. For each configuration which has the selected number of steps the deflection at a predetermined point is calculated when a load is applied at another point. For those deflections which fall within a desired predetermined range of deflections, the slope of the bending angle of the shaft is calculated at the point of deflection. A configuration is then selected which has a desired slope and a golf club shaft is made with the middle portion configured to provide the desired bending angle. Specific configurations for maximum bending angle are provided for both wood-type and iron-type golf clubs.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1982Date of Patent: December 17, 1985Assignee: Acushnet CompanyInventors: Steven L.
