  • Patent number: 9932811
Abstract: The invention provides a control system and method for limiting vibrations in a tool string system. The system comprises a pump connected to a rotatable tool string driven by a drive system. The control system comprises feedback of both torque and rotational speed signals into a controller. An objective of said controller is to maintain the drive speed over torque ratio equal to the connected tool string impedance (Z). A secondary objective, for lower frequencies, is to approach and maintain a setpoint speed as drive rotation speed. The system includes a rotational speed sensor and a torque sensor, with the latter optionally replaced by a motor torque signal already available from a variable frequency drive (VFD) for an AC motor and the current safeguarding signal for a DC motor.

  • Patent number: 9926765
Abstract: A downhole tool or plug is used for sealing in tubing. A mandrel of the tool has a first shoulder disposed toward a downhole end of the mandrel. A sealing element for sealing in the tubing is disposed on the mandrel adjacent the first shoulder, a slip is disposed on the mandrel adjacent the sealing element, and a cone is disposed on the mandrel adjacent the slip. In setting the tool, the cone moves toward the first shoulder, wedges the slip against the tubing, and compresses the sealing element between the slip and the first shoulder. Force applied against a seated plug in the mandrel transfers through the mandrel to the cone and slip without passing through the sealing element.

  • Patent number: 9920612
Abstract: The invention provides a control system and method for limiting vibrations in a tool string system, comprising a relatively heavy rotatable device, such as a pump system or a bottom hole assembly, connected to a long rotatable tool string driven by a drive system. The control system comprises feedback of both torque and rotational speed signals to correct the set rotational speed. An objective is to maintain the drive speed over torque ratio equal to the connected tool string impedance. A secondary objective, for lower frequencies, is to approach and maintain a setpoint speed as drive rotation speed. The system may include a rotational speed sensor and a torque sensor, with the latter optionally replaced by a motor torque signal already available from a variable frequency drive (VFD) for an AC motor and the current safeguarding signal for a DC motor.

  • Patent number: 9915144
Abstract: A logging tool for use downhole includes sensor modules that monitor fluid flow in a wellbore. The sensor modules are disposed on flexible arms that project radially outward from the logging tool, so that the modules are located at discrete radial positions in the wellbore. The sensor modules include a flow sensor, an optical sensor, and a fluid conductivity sensor. The rate and type of fluid flowing in the wellbore can be estimated due to employing the different sensor types. A location sensor estimates the radial location of the modules so that a flow profile of the flowing fluid can be obtained.

  • Patent number: 9915126
Abstract: A dual barrier system withstands pressure differentials well above those of the check valves in a float shoe used to allow circulation of a bottom hole assembly on the way to a desired depth. The bottom hole assembly can have screens and an internal wash pipe that pushes a sleeve to hold open a lower flapper for running in. The wash pipe also holds open an upper flapper that has opposed orientation to facilitate circulation when running in. Once on location an annulus packer closes off the producing zones where the screens are located from a lower zone that can have higher pressures. A high pressure packer is set against the shoe track and the wash pipe is retracted through this packer. Retracting the wash pipe allows closure of both flappers. Flow is blocked in opposed directions by the flappers and packer in the shoe track.

  • Patent number: 9915121
Abstract: A retrievable packer has its sealing system unloaded before the slip system is relaxed by separation of slip cones from slips that flank the seal assembly. The mandrel is cut so that the portion above the cut can be raised to take a cone up and away from collet heads which previously were trapped by the cone. The collet heads are disposed between opposed sloping surfaces so that the retraction of the cone from under the heads allows the residual rubber pressure to force the heads toward the mandrel into the space created by relative movement of the mandrel that took the wedge cone uphole. The heads are at ends of fingers having a radially inward bias to further assist retraction of the heads toward the mandrel. With the heads retracted the sealing element stretches out before slip cones are moved relative to the slips.

  • Patent number: 9909367
Abstract: A downhole tool (10) comprising rotatable inner and outer sleeves (62, 63). The sleeves (62, 63) comprise coupling portions for transmitting a torque between the sleeves (62, 63). The tool is reconfigurable between a first configuration whereby the coupling portions are axially misaligned to prevent transmission of torque between the inner and outer sleeves (62, 63), and a second configuration whereby the coupling portions are axially aligned to permit a transmission of torque between the sleeves (62, 63). At least one of the coupling portions is configured to prevent the transmission of torque above a predetermined torque threshold.

  • Patent number: 9909372
Abstract: A stop collar for pipes or shafts is provided for restricting objects from sliding lengthwise along the length of a pipe or shaft. The stop collar is ring-shaped and includes a leading edge which is angled from perpendicular to the pipe's longitudinal axis. The angled leading edge provides the leading edge with a proximal engagement point and a distal engagement point. Longitudinal force on the distal engagement point, by an object such as a tool or sensor, causes the stop collar to cock relative to the pipe or shaft. This cocking of the stop collar effects a braking function to prevent the stop collar from sliding longitudinally along the pipe.

  • Patent number: 9896892
Abstract: A system and method for moving directional drill pipe with vacuum power. The system is used with a vacuum beam mounted on a boom. It has a vacuum pad that is pivotally attached at one end by a hinge to the vacuum beam. The other end of the vacuum pad is attached to the vacuum beam via a hydraulic cylinder. Operation of the hydraulic cylinder causes the vacuum pad to rotate about the hinge and change the angle of the vacuum pad relative to the vacuum beam. Lateral movement of the vacuum pad relative to the vacuum beam is provided by one or more pinned connections located adjacent to the hinge. Vacuum pressure from the vacuum pad is used to grasp and release drill pipe.

  • Patent number: 9869169
Abstract: A method for recovering hydrocarbons from an underground formation having a first exploited or partially exploited region and a second less exploited region in at least partial fluid communication with said first region. Electrical heating means is provided in the first region, and electrical energy supplied to the first region to raise or sustain its pressure to mitigate the loss of fluids and pressure from the second region due to hydraulic interaction with the first region. The electric heating affects the pressure by thermal expansion of the liquids and vapors present in or added to the first region and/or flashing of those liquids to vapors. The use of electric means is advantageous over the prior art by allowing for the redirection of injection fluids to more active regions of exploitation, and allows for more timely reclamation of the equipment and surface area above the first region.
