  • Patent number: 9206928
Abstract: A sealing gland for sealing between an elongate member and a surface through which the member extends, the gland comprising a sealing body having an inner membrane for sealing about the elongate member and an outer peripheral region for sealing against the surface. The inner membrane has one or more cut guides on an underside of the membrane arranged to locate adjacent the surface in use. Each cut guide represents a known elongate member option and facilitates the formation of an aperture through the membrane for suitably receiving the associated elongate member option there through in use. A compression ring is also provided to couple the surface over the sealing body to compress the sealing body in use and form an effective seal.

Abstract: A metal gasket for establishing a gas and fluid-tight seal between two members and which is resistant to temperatures of greater than 430° C. and even up to 540° C. is provided. The metal gasket is made of a 200 series stainless steel which includes, by weight percentage: up to 1.0% Silicon, 3.5-5.5% Manganese, up to 0.060% Phosphorus, up to 0.030% Sulfur, 17.5-19.5% Chromium, 0.50-2.00% Molybdenum, 4.0-6.0% Nickel, 0.10-1.00% Niobium, 0.08-0.30% Nitrogen and the remainder of Iron. This particular alloy has been found to provide the gasket with very high mechanical strength, even at temperatures of up to 540° C. Additionally, due to the low nickel content of the 200 series stainless steel, the metal gasket may be made more cost-effectively than other known metal gaskets.

  • Patent number: 9163729
Abstract: A sealing system features a primary and secondary bullet seals where the secondary seal is preferably bidirectional and is activated to spread fins with a t-shaped ring that is driven with differential pressure to advance after temperature exposure softens a stop material on the extending portion of the t-shaped ring. Opposed t-shaped rings are disposed at ends of the backup ring that have fins at both ends. Advancement of the t-shaped ring spreads the fins and retains them in the spread condition for enhanced sealing. Optionally the primary seal can also be actuated with a similar t-shaped ring with a temperature sensitive delay feature.

  • Patent number: 9157280
Abstract: A backup ring for a face seal in a roller cone bit is configured to resist wear from drilling fluids present adjacent exposed faces of the backup ring. Portions are removed from an exposed end face in a variety of shapes while the hardness of the material is increased. The removal of material offsets an increase in force that would be transmitted through the backup ring on face seal assembly due to flexing. A spring can optionally be included in the removed material location. Another way is to increase the edge density of all or part of the exposed edges while leaving the interior portions unaffected by using electron beam radiation to increase the crosslink density or by other techniques that allow a unitary structure with a more durable edge region.
