  • Patent number: 10415324
Abstract: A vortex-controlled variable flow resistance device ideal for use in a backpressure tool for advancing drill string in extended reach downhole operations. The characteristics of the pressure waves generated by the device are controlled by the growth and decay of vortices in the vortex chamber(s) of a flow path. The flow path is designed to produce alternating primary and secondary vortices—one clockwise and one counter-clockwise—where the primary vortex is stronger and produces higher backpressure than the secondary vortex. This in turn generates alternating weak and strong pressure pulses in the drill string. The weak pulses may be barely perceptible so that the effective frequency of the pulses is determined by the stronger primary vortices.

  • Patent number: 10416024
Abstract: A system and method for monitoring underground drilling in which vibration is monitored by creating a model of the drill string using finite element techniques or finite difference techniques and (i) predicting vibration by inputting real time values of operating parameters into the model, and then adjusting the model to agree with measured vibration data, (ii) predicting the weight on bit and drill string and mud motor speeds at which resonance will occur, as well as when stick-slip will occur, so that the operator can avoid operating regimes that will result in high vibration, (iii) determining vibration and torque levels along the length of the drill string based on the measured vibration and torque at one or more locations, (iv) determining the remaining life of critical components of the drill string based on the history of the vibration to which the components have been subjected, and (v) determining the optimum drilling parameters that will avoid excessive vibration of the drill string.

  • Patent number: 10400527
Abstract: In a method to degrade filtercake in a hydrocarbon reservoir using downhole in-situ heat generation, a filtercake breaker, configured to degrade filtercake at a temperature, is mixed with a drilling fluid. The drilling fluid mixed with the filtercake breaker is flowed through a hydrocarbon reservoir in which a wellbore is being drilled. A filtercake forms in a portion of the hydrocarbon reservoir responsive to flowing the drilling fluid. A temperature of the portion of the hydrocarbon reservoir is less than the temperature at which the filtercake breaker is configured to degrade filtercake. Multiple filtercake chemicals are flowed to the portion of the hydrocarbon reservoir. The multiple filtercake chemicals, when mixed, are configured to react in an exothermic reaction to release heat to increase the temperature of the portion of the hydrocarbon reservoir to at least the temperature at which the filtercake breaker is configured to degrade filtercake.

  • Patent number: 10400530
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to systems, assemblies, and methods for facilitating fluid flow during/after landing of logging tools in a bottom hole assembly. In operation, a memory logging tool is lowered through a longitudinal bore of a drill pipe string and landed in a bottom hole assembly disposed at the end of the drill pipe string. Drilling fluid is pumped behind the logging tool to assist with downward movement of the tool. As the logging tools land, partial fluid flow path is blocked by the logging tools. The fluid pressure can rise in response to the narrowing of the fluid flow path. Facilitating fluid flow through and/or around the logging tools can put the rising fluid pressure in a proper range for powering the logging tools to land and monitoring purposes.
