  • Patent number: 6997853
Abstract: A communication interface is coupled to an exercise machine and the public communication network. The communication interface receives first exercise information from an exercise machine wherein the first exercise information indicates exercise performance. Some examples of exercise information are video and audio files for competitive tracking with voice and video interaction. The communication interface then generates first communication information based on the first exercise information. In one embodiment, the communication information is in Internet Protocol packets. The communication interface then transmits the first communication information over the public communication network. The communication interface then receives second communication information from the public communication network. The communication interface then generates second exercise information based on the second communication information wherein the second exercise information indicates a response to the exercise performance.

  • Patent number: 6994659
Abstract: Described is an apparatus for performing power exercises with one or more weights, wherein a weight consists of a reservoir for filling with liquid and/or air. This reservoir, referred to below as weight reservoir, serves as weight resistance for a power exercise and is connected by means of a flexible liquid conduit to a liquid displacing device. This liquid displacing device can carry liquid into the weight reservoir and remove it from the weight reservoir, whereby the weight of the weight reservoir, and thus the resistance of the power exercise, becomes greater or smaller. The operation of this liquid displacing device can be carried out by the user while performing the exercise in order to adjust the weight to his or her wishes without having to interrupt the power exercise for this purpose. The invention can be applied to power exercises with free weights and power exercises wherein the weight reservoir is provided with a conducting device.

  • Patent number: 6976940
Abstract: A “Complete Body Fitness Machine” that provides for a muscle building workout as well as a cardiovascular workout for the total body consists generally of an adjustable seat and two arms on either side, which are adjustable in height and have an infinitely and independently variable resistance possible in either clockwise or counterclockwise rotation. The arms are designed to have several types of mechanisms attached, so as to be able to work with a variety of body parts including, but not limited to, hands, arms, legs, feet, torso, neck and shoulders. When the proper attachment is used, the resistance for each direction of rotation of the arm is set, and the exercise is conducted. Depending on the workout desired, the seat and arms could be adjusted to different positions as well as the seat can be free-moving.

  • Patent number: 6971972
Abstract: A methodology is disclosed for providing a physical therapy practitioner with practice-specific prescriptive exercise routine depictions as an effective way to enhance compliance of a home-based physical therapy regimen. The method comprises various steps, including assessing a given practitioner's commonly prescribed home-based exercise prescriptions, selecting certain of the exercises for comparison relative to a previously compiled digitized motion picture library containing excerpts showing various exercises. A decision is then made as to whether a representative exercise excerpt is endemic to the physical therapy practitioner. If the excerpt(s) are deemed satisfactory, DVD's are developed and provided to the practitioner. The practitioner may then properly prescribe a home-based physical therapy regimen during an office visit at which time a select set of the developed DVD materials are delivered to the patient.

  • Patent number: 6949052
Abstract: The present invention is directed to devices, systems, and methods for intelligent or ‘smart’ exercise equipment to indicate the location, the intent to use, and/or the amount and/or type of use of a piece of exercise equipment. More specifically, one embodiment of the invention may be used to locate or indicate the location of a portable piece of exercise equipment. Such an indicator may also indicate to other users, a particular user's intent to use the piece of equipment such that other users will not attempt to use the equipment or the current user may end their use of the equipment and pass it to the intended user. In a further embodiment, the indicator may not be activated if the piece of exercise equipment is already in use by a current user. In another embodiment of the invention, the amount of use of, e.g., repetitions done on, a piece of exercise equipment may be indicated to the user or may be logged for later viewing, downloading, or transmission.

  • Patent number: 6929589
Abstract: An improved device for athletic exercise by pulling at a resisting force. The device consists of a number of spring housing assemblies that are stacked and clamped in a column with at least one pulley wheel assembly to which a cord and pull handle is attached. A grooved metal shaft is disposed throughout the column longitudinal axis to drive all the constant-force spring assemblies which are stacked inside the device when the pulley wheel is caused to rotate. A person uses the device by first selecting which spring assemblies he wants to produce a particular resisting force level, by pushing separate selector levers, one for each spring. He then pulls at the pull handle to experience the chosen resisting force. The device design allows a user the choice of many resisting force levels, using only a small number of spring assemblies. The device is small, light in weight and conveniently shaped for easy attachment to any suitable restraining object.

  • Patent number: 6918862
Abstract: An exercising device for strengthening hands or limbs has first and second bladders containing fluid with first and second valves that couple the bladders to a fluid pressure gage. Squeezing the first bladder by the left hand causes easy flow through the first valve to the pressure gage in a first direction, whereas the second valve presents a high impedance to flow in the same direction into the right hand bladder, so that the measured gage impulse pressure is proportional to the flow rate of fluid through the second valve indicating left hand strength. Squeezing the second bladder by the right hand produces fluid flow in the opposite direction with the right hand strength being measured in like manner. Alternate bladder squeezing creates a pleasant rhythmic exercise routine and the peak gage pressure indicates progress. The valve configuration enables strength measurement of the weak and the strong with one device.
