  • Patent number: 5191083
Abstract: This invention is directed to the preparation of polymerizable monomers that are prepared from 1-(1-isocyanato-1-methylethyl)-3-(1-methylethenyl) benzene (m-TMI) and 1-(1-isocyanato-1-methylethyl)-4-(1-methylethenyl) benzene (p-TMI). The monomers prepared from m- and p-TMI can contain numerous chemical moieties, and when polymerized, produce polymers that have chemically bonded to the polymeric backbone the functional moiety. More specifically, these TMI derived monomers may contain chain breaking antioxidant moieties, peroxide decomposing antioxidant moieties, ultraviolet stabilizing moieties, triplet quenching moieties, and other chemical moieties that are useful in polymers.

  • Patent number: 5185024
Abstract: This invention discloses methods for manufacture and use of poly(ammonium acrylate) and polyacrylamide hydrogels in agricultural applications. Such hydrogels are applied to the soil or the plants by spraying. Spraying is advantageous over other methods of application, such as mixing with soil and broadcasting because of enhanced plant contact, evenness of distribution, and reduced labor. The gels are prepared for spraying by adding water to provide a readily deformable polymer which will pass through a spray apparatus. The hydrogels sprayed may include additives including micronutrients, maconutrients, pesticides, microbes, plant growth regulators, surfactants, and freezing point modifiers. Use of the hydrogels saves irrigation water and ameliorates salting of irrigated cropland. Sprayed hydrogels may also be used to protect crops from freezing and to protect foliage from desiccation.

  • Patent number: 5175369
Abstract: This invention relates to a process for separating methoxyisopropylamine and particularly to an improvement in the process for the recovery of methoxyisopropylamine from the reaction of methoxyisopropanol with ammonia under amination conditions. In this process water is produced as a byproduct and in the separation process an azeotrope is formed which comprises about 14% water and 86% methoxyisopropylamine at atmospheric pressure. The process for enhancing separation of the azeotrope comprises contacting the azeotrope of methoxyisopropylamine and water with diisopropylamine in sufficient amount to form the azeotrope of water and diisopropylamine and separating the azeotrope from the other materials in a distillation column. The overheads in this column is charged to a decanter where water is removed as a bottoms phase and the diisopropylamine as the upper phase and returned as reflux to the distillation volumn.

  • Patent number: 5157048
Abstract: An improved method for the decarbalkoxyation of alkylated .beta.-keto esters to obtain high yields of ketones. In accordance with the method, decarbalkoxylation of alkylated .beta.-keto esters is accomplished by heating the esters in the presence of dilute aqueous alkali and an effective amount of a phase-transfer agent. The method produces commercially practical yields of ketone in a manner which is facile, economical and environmentally safe. • Patent number: 5143714
Abstract: A test/control procedure and material is provided to facilitate standardization of immunostaining techniques and the assessment of their results. Pellets of an absorbent gel such as agar gel are caused to adsorb individual specific concentrations of an antigen of interest. The adsorbed antigens are confined to the individual pellets as by fixation or by enclosure in a diffusion-inhibiting barrier, and the pellets are installed in individual wells in a block of the gel in a manner to become integrated therein. The block may then be subjected to the same preparative routines as a tissue sample, sectioned and mounted like the sample, and then subjected to immunostaining by the same routine as the sample sections to provide a valid basis for assessment of the stained sample sections by comparison with the stained gel block sections. A gel block of suitable configuration is also disclosed.
