    Abstract: A piston system for a compression engine that detonates fuel during an appropriate part of the cycle includes a piston and a connecting rod that connects the piston to a crankshaft via a cam on crankshaft. The cam on the crankshaft provides an offset such that the orbit of the cam during each stroke cycle is different than the orbit of the crankshaft. The connecting rod is connected to the cam such that the orbit of the cam is larger than the orbit of the cam. In this way, for each stroke cycle, the crankshaft is always past the top of its orbit when the piston is at top dead center.

The engine also includes at least one port fuel injector, a flow guide plate, spark plugs, prechambers housing the spark plugs, and exhaust lines. The pistons are actuated by combustion reactions. The cylinders house the pistons. The combustion chambers form containment boundaries for the combustion reactions. The intake lines form an intake manifold and provide an air fuel mixture to the combustion chambers. The flow guide plate directs the air-fuel mixture to a specified location with the corresponding combustion chamber. The spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mixture to initiate the combustion reactions. Each prechamber houses a corresponding spark plug and concentrates the air-fuel mixture in close proximity to the corresponding spark plug. The exhaust lines form an exhaust manifold that provides a path for exhaust gas formed by the combustion reaction to exit the combustion chambers.

A time course of a temperature reading from the coolant temperature sensor is performed for a predetermined period of time from the time the vehicle system is activated. A gradient of the temperature reading curve is determined. The gradient of the temperature reading curve is evaluated using a threshold value comparison to determine whether the auxiliary heater was activated before the cold start.
