  • Patent number: 8620789
Abstract: A system, method and computer program product creates an index based on accounting data, or a portfolio of financial objects based on the index where the portfolio is weighted according to accounting data. Indexes may be built with metrics other than market capitalization weighting, price weighting or equal weighting. Financial and non-financial metrics may be used to build indexes to create passive investment systems. A combination of financial non-market capitalization metrics may be used with non-financial metrics to create passive investment systems. Once built, the index may be used as a basis to purchase securities for a portfolio. Specifically excluded are widely-used capitalization-weighted and price-weighted indexes, in which price of a security contributes in a substantial way to calculation of weight of that security in the index or the portfolio, and equal weighting weighted indexes. The indexes may be constructed to minimize volatility.

  • Patent number: 8615454
Abstract: Disclosed herein in a preferred embodiment is an automated financial instrument brokerage system wherein a front end layer interacts with customers to generate activity requests for an intermediate layer. The intermediate layer preferably processes the activity requests and places financial instrument orders on a financial market if appropriate. A backend layer preferably provides data to the intermediate layer for processing activity requests. Multiple heterogeneous front end customer applications may be supported by the same intermediate layer. Further, multiple backend layer applications may interact with the intermediate layer in a manner transparent to the front end layer. Further, scalability can be achieved be partitioning various tasks of the intermediate layer onto separate servers, and more preferably on separate redundant servers. Load balancers may then be used in the intermediate layer to provide distributed access to these servers.

  • Patent number: 8606613
Abstract: Under the present invention when a business process is desired to be outsourced from a client (e.g., a company or governmental unit) to a third party outsourcer, an outsourcing project is initially planned. Typically, the plan includes a plurality of overlapping phases that extend over several time periods. Thereafter, a cost for implementing the outsourcing project is estimated. Should the cost exceed a planned budget of the client, the excess/investment is addressed while an agreement between the client and the outsourcer for the outsourcing project is being reached. This can involve reducing scope, restructuring the overlapping phases to reduce or eliminate the excess cost, and/or integrating funding options to address the cost as part of the agreement.

  • Patent number: 8606584
Abstract: Internet/SCHA system of using an interactive device such as an e-mail pager to obtain information from a publicly available source, such as the Internet. The e-mail pager may send information in its native format to a service that acts as an intermediary. That service takes the information and uses it to assemble a request to the actual information source, such as a Web page being accessed. If a web page is being accessed, the request is in HTML, and may include personal logon information. The response from the web page is also in HTML, and this information is received by the service, and salient information is taken from the HTML file. The information is reformatted, e.g. according to a template, into the e-mail pager's native format, and sent to the pager. Another embodiment describes opening multiple pages, and assembling their content into a single web page.

  • Patent number: 8595037
Abstract: A property of an insurance policy may be determined, at least in part, upon characteristics of a vehicle autonomous drive mode selection system. The characteristics may pertain to any capability, configuration, and/or operating state of the autonomous drive mode selection system (and/or vehicle). For example, a property of the insurance policy may be based upon whether the autonomous drive mode selection system is enabled or disabled. In some embodiments, the property of the insurance policy may be based upon which of one or more autonomous driving modes is selected via an autonomous drive mode selection system. The property of the insurance policy may be dynamic, and may be updated in response to changes to the autonomous drive mode selection system.

  • Patent number: 8595118
Abstract: Methods and systems for selecting and weighting securities for an actively managed exchange-traded fund. An initial selection of stocks includes domestic or international stocks, which are selected based at least in part on market capitalization. Each stock is scored using a plurality of growth and value factors to generate one or more growth scores and one or more value scores. A selection score is determined for each stock, and the stocks are ranked according to selection scores. A predetermined amount of stocks are eliminated from the stock portfolio based on selection score ranking, and the remaining stocks are split into a plurality of sub-groups. A stock portfolio is generated by weighting the remaining stocks according to the sub-groups they are in, with each stock being equally weighted within its sub-group. An exchange-traded fund is offered to consumers based on the stock portfolio.

  • Patent number: 8595041
Abstract: Some embodiments of a task responsibility system may be implemented as an application to support people, machines, or both functioning in a manufacturing or production environment, warehouse environment, or other work environment. The focus is on a plant-local solution. In such circumstances, the task responsibility system may identify and direct one or more tasks to a computer-implemented folder independent of the worker(s), machine(s), or a combination thereof assigned to the folder. Thus, the system (or a user of the system) is permitted to dynamically assign a worker or machine to the computer-implemented folder subsequent to the tasks being directed thereto, in which case the worker or machine may be responsible for the tasks that are directed to the folder.

  • Patent number: 8589276
Abstract: A system, method and computer program product creates an index based on accounting based data, as well as a portfolio of financial objects based on the index where the portfolio is weighted according to accounting based data. A passive investment system may be based on indices created from various metrics. The indexes may be built with metrics other than market capitalization weighting, price weighting or equal weighting. Non-financial metrics may also be used to build indexes to create passive investment systems. Additionally, a combination of financial non-market capitalization metrics may be used along with non-financial metrics to create passive investment systems. Once the index is built, it may be used as a basis to purchase securities for a portfolio.

  • Patent number: 8577778
Abstract: Methods and systems for replicating derivatives strategies and for trading derivatives strategies in a demand-based trading market are described. In one embodiment, a set of contingent claims are created to replicate a derivatives strategy. One or more parameters of a contingent claim in the replication set may be determined as a function of one or more parameters of a derivatives strategy and an outcome of the event. An investment amount for a contingent claim in the replication set may be determined as a function of one or more parameters of the contingent claim and a total amount invested in a demand-based auction. In other embodiments, derivatives strategies and/or financial products are enabled to be traded in a demand-based auction and are offered to customers and/or traded in the auction.

  • Patent number: 8543442
Abstract: A technique for performing commercial venture analysis involves establishing an empirically-derived structure and evaluating companies using analytical techniques within that structure. The technique may involve defining jobs, or goals a customer is attempting to reach, with dozens or even hundreds of outcomes. Ideally, the structure and tools facilitate analysis that would not be possible otherwise. Moreover, the nature of the system enables real-time input for changing conditions and the ability to calculate returns for new markets in which products or services do not exist.

  • Patent number: 8538865
Abstract: A method is disclosed for determining the prior net benefit of obtaining data relating to an individual risk in an insurance portfolio, via a survey or similar procedure. A risk model is developed at the individual risk level for mathematically estimating the probability of expected loss given a set of information about the risk. The risk model is incorporated into a profitability model. A probability distribution relating to the type of survey information to be obtained is developed, which is used for determining the gross value of obtaining the information. The method produces as an output a quantitative estimation (e.g., dollar value) of the net benefit of obtaining survey data for the risk, calculated as the gross value of the survey less the survey's cost, where the benefit of the survey relates to a quantitative increase in predictive accuracy resulting from incorporating the survey data into the predictive model.

  • Patent number: 8527417
Abstract: A system and computer-based method for using a one-time password (OTP) to authenticate an identity of a cardholder in a financial transaction initiated by the cardholder with a merchant via a first communication medium. A one-time password is generated at an interchange computer system and transmitted to the cardholder via a second communication medium. The cardholder is prompted to enter access credential information, including the one-time password. When the entered access credential information is verified (e.g., the entered one time password is equal to the generated one-time password), a successful authentication is indicated to the merchant.
