  • Patent number: 9055622
Abstract: Disclosed examples of optical systems having a plurality of light sources with each source having a different spectral outputs may be calibrated by measuring a spectral characteristic of the combined light with two measurements, e.g., one from a colorimeter and one from a sensor included in the system. Accordingly, one can determine a transform function in response to the two measures that models a feedback response of the optical system for each of a plurality of the inputs that would cause the optical system to generate radiant energy within a predetermined range of a spectrum. In order to calibrate the optical system, the transform function is programmed in the optical system to enable the optical system to transform an input to the optical system to a plurality of unique control signals each for controlling a respective light source of the plurality of light sources.

  • Patent number: 9046421
Abstract: Electronic devices may include light sensors. A light sensor may be an ambient light sensor that is mounted adjacent to an aperture in an opaque structure. An ambient light sensor may include active light sensor elements located adjacent to the aperture and inactive light sensor elements located adjacent to the opaque structure. Signal processing circuitry may be interposed between the light sensor elements and a summing circuit that sums light signals from the light sensor elements to form an ambient light signal. The signal processing circuitry may include a switch and an amplifier associated with each light sensor element. The switch associated with each element may be used to selectively activate or inactivate that element. The amplifier associated with each element may be used to amplify the light signal from that element by a gain factor that depends on the location of that element with respect to the aperture.

  • Patent number: 8988008
Abstract: A system and method for controlling the dimming of a lighting element, or other electrical load, that uses a timer synchronized to the AC waveform is disclosed. The timer is set up to repeatedly count at a rate equal to twice the frequency of the AC waveform. An output from the timer logic is asserted when the timer value exceeds a predetermined value, stored in a compare register. This output is connected to the gate of a triac, which controls the passage of current from the AC power source to the electrical load. A capture register is used to determine the temporal relationship between the restart of the timer and the AC waveform. This system and method reduces the real time requirements of an associated processing unit, and improves consistency, thereby reducing flicker.
