  • Patent number: 4508509
Abstract: The device comprises a casing composed of a bottom tray having an upstanding pivot post and a hinged cover having an open window. Three concentric flat rings have partial designs embossed thereon to provide raised design portions, the inner ring being rotatable about the post, the intermediate ring rotatable about the inner ring and the outer ring rotatable about the intermediate ring. By individually rotating or angularly positioning the rings relative to each other, any of the partial designs can be radially aligned to form a composite design. After the composite design has been formed, a piece of paper is placed over at least the segments constituting the preselected design. Closing of the cover on the tray clamps the rings in a fixed relation with each other so that the user can then rub a marking implement, such as a colored pencil or crayon, over the portion of the paper appearing in the open window in order to transfer the preselected design onto the overlying paper.

  • Patent number: 4507089
Abstract: The invention relates to a mechanical support module for the construction of different models of nucleic acids or the like.A module of this type consists of at least one frame (110) carrying a plurality of (n) plates (255) intended for carrying balls representing atoms and sticks or the like representing bonds, arranged so that each plate (255) contains four bases. The arrangement of the bases on the plates and of the plates in space is such that the pathway (T) followed by the genetic information from one plate to the next corresponds to a Moebius strip having more than one twist, which is therefore called a polymoebius global strip. The invention applies in particular to education, research and industry.

  • Patent number: 4507087
Abstract: The present invention relates to a closed finger painting system that is adapted to be both clean and reusable. Provided is a rigid base member to which a number of closed, clear, flexible bags are attached. The bags are particularly adapted to be overlapped with respect to each other. Each bag contains a colorful, transparent fluid. The fluids can be manipulated within each bag by pressing the bags with one's fingers. When the fluids in more than one bag overlap, they create an optical impression of being mixed to create new colors. Therefore, an infinite variety of distinctive, abstract designs can be created.

  • Patent number: 4505683
Abstract: A device for rapidly demonstrating the darkening action of phototropic objects, particularly eyeglasses. The device has a housing or casing provided in its lower part (6) with a hollow space (7) which is placed over the objects to be demonstrated (8, 9) while such objects lie on any suitable horizontal supporting surface such as a table or desk. These objects are uniformly illuminated by a flash tube emitting light in the UV-A range and in the visible range. Upon each actuation of the circuit controlling the flash tube a plurality of flashes which succeed each other at a predetermined time interval is automatically given off.

  • Patent number: 4502686
Abstract: A amusement game includes a pair of symmetrical, folded alleys which meet at a common, centrally disposed scoring region. Each of the folded alleys includes a gutter disposed on each side thereof and a first rebounding barrier extending generally across the alley and oriented at a 45.degree. angle. A second rebounding barrier is oriented at a right angle to a first rebounding barrier and forms a chevron shaped pattern; one end of each of the barriers being disposed in close proximity. A common scoring region is disposed generally intermediate the second rebounding barriers of the pair of folded alleys. The scoring region includes a pair of parallel gutters as well as indicia disposed within scoring boundary lines indicating a score or point value for placing a game piece within the associated boundary.

  • Patent number: 4498668
Abstract: A device for scoring the opposing sides of a tennis match which is adapted to be mounted on the side of a tennis racket handle. A variation of this device may be employed to keep count of the games won by each side. The device comprises an elongated, flexible, transparent structure which is segmented into two compartments by a seam across its mid section. Enclosed within each compartment is a bead-like chip or marker which is slideably movable therein when the marker is pressed gently. Each chip is held in place by a spring-like action wedging it against the wall of its compartment and preventing it from being moved inadvertently during the game. The structure itself is sandwiched between two strips of film which are adhesively attached together. The outer film layer includes an elongated transparent panel through which each marker may be viewed within its compartment and upon which are imprinted indicia, each of which corresponds to a score in a tennis game.

  • Patent number: 4497491
Abstract: A plurality of geometrically arranged circular depressions are formed in a game board to nestingly receive one or a stack of game pieces. The game pieces, which may be in the shape of discs, are stackable in ascending order reflective of the valuation assigned to each and which valuation is indicated by a raised symbol on the upper surface of each game piece. The lower surface of each game piece includes an indentation configured to mate with a lower valuation symbol formed on the upper surface of another game piece to interlock the game pieces when stacked and regulate the stacking order. To play the game, each of the players is given a set of game pieces. Taking turns, the players attempt to align a specific number of uncovered ones of their game pieces of a common valuation upon the game board and any existing stacks; variations in object and mode of play are contemplated.

  • Patent number: 4496324
Abstract: This invention is a demonstration device to be used in the teaching of the concept of the Fluid Mosaic Membrane. The Biomembrane Demonstration Apparatus consists of a transparent vessel containing two or three immiscible fluids with sufficient difference in density to support layering. Phospholipid molecules are represented by a spherical head region and two tail-like structures; said molecules are of two types, differing in density such that a lipid bilayer is naturally formed along the interfaces between the immiscible fluids. Protein representing molecules are designed to float within either or both lipid layers. The device may be used as a showpiece or as a working demonstration model.

  • Patent number: 4493653
Abstract: An ultrasound phantom is provided which simulates human tissue containing tissue masses viable for biopsy. The phantom is used to demonstrate or teach the performance of a biopsy procedure assisted by real-time ultrasonic imaging. The phantom comprises a plurality of small balloons, filled with a viscous substance, and tied shut. The balloons are distributed through and surrounded by a gelatinous substance comprising tissue equivalent material. During a simulated biopsy procedure, a section of the phantom is imaged as a biopsy needle penetrates through the tissue equivalent material, pierces one of the balloons, and aspirates some of the viscous substance from the balloon.

  • Patent number: 4481001
Abstract: A skin model for use in demonstrating or practicing intradermal injection of fluids is disclosed. The model is a composite laminate of: (1) a subcutaneous tissue-simulating layer made of a foamed elastomer of low compression deflection and hardness; (2) a dermis-simulating layer of about 1 to 3 mm thick of that is substantially nonporous has a slightly greater hardness than the subcutaneous tissue-simulating layer and a penetration value in the range of 30 to 100 mm and is made of a silicone elastomer that contains reinforcing fibers, and, optionally, flesh tone pigment; and (3) in epidermis-simulating layer about 0.1 to 1 mm thick made of a high tear strength, high tensile strength elastomer. One or more of the layers may be contoured so that the surface of the model is shaped to simulate contour defects in natural skin.

  • Patent number: 4479654
Abstract: A game comprises a base member divided into a plurality of horizontally-extending vertically-aligned zones representing levels of a building structure open at their opposite ends, a plurality of playing pieces in the form of colored blocks adapted to be received in the levels, and a pair of conveyors or elevators at the opposite ends of the zones, each adapted to receive several of the colored blocks for shifting them from one level to another. The total number of colored blocks is less than the number adapted to be accommodated by all the levels, so that there are always some empty spaces in the levels for receiving colored blocks as they are shifted by the use of the conveyors, the object being to fill each level only with the blocks of a single color. Another embodiment is described wherein the playing pieces, instead of being colored blocks, are blocks bearing alphabetical characters, in which case the object is to shift the playing pieces among the levels so as to form words.
