    Abstract: A dipping sonar transducer housing includes a generally cylindrical housing (10) which is suspended at the end of a cable (12) connected to tile housing through a vibration isolation module (14) which includes springs (22) to damp out noise, particularly that from the supporting vehicle. The housing (10) contains an upper water-tight chamber (26) which contains circuit boards (28) and preamplifiers (30) which serve as amplification and multiplexing means for the hydrophones carried on extendible arms (96, 60, 88); a second water-tight chamber (35) immediately below the first chamber (26) contains an electric motor (36) which drives a hydraulic pump (38) which provides fluid under pressure to an accumulator (40). Movable vertically on the outside of the second chamber (35) is a piston (48) which drives a plurality of links (54, 56) which extend the receiver array.

    Abstract: This invention is directed to a device for generating a V agent vapor and aerosol. The device comprises a container having a first and second chamber separated by a destructable diaphragm. The chemical components necessary to form the V agent are divided between the two compartments. Freon or a similar fluorinated hydrocarbon is placed in one of the chambers which communicates with an ejection nozzle through a sealed opening. An explosive charge is detonated to remove the diaphragm between the compartments and to allow the chemical components to combine and form the V agent. The heat of the reaction in the presence of the freon causes the pressure to increase in the chamber. This pressure, together with the heat of reaction, breaks the seal between the chambers and the ejection nozzle and the V agent is ejected from the nozzle as a vapor and aerosol.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for explosively penetrating hardened containers such as steel drums without producing metal fragmentation is disclosed. The apparatus can be used singularly or in combination with water disrupters and other disablement tools. The apparatus is mounted in close proximity to the target and features a main sheet explosive that is initiated at least three equidistant points along the sheet's periphery. A buffer material is placed between the sheet explosive and the target. As a result, the metallic fragments generated from the detonation of the detonator are attenuated so that no fragments from the detonator are transferred to the target. As a result, an opening can be created in containers such as steel drums through which access to the IED is obtained to defuse it with projectiles or fluids.

    Abstract: An improved cartridge of a type having a casing and a bullet with a tip expellable from the casing for entering a target. The improvement includes the bullet having a pair of throughbores bored through different levels thereof for causing the bullet to expand violently and over a wide diameter and mushroom halfway in the target so as to cause severe damage, destruction, and hemorrhage to internal organs of the target for a quick kill, with the mushrooming being regular up to a first throughbore of said pair of throughbores and then splitting causing not only a wider mushroom but a sudden extra shock to the target due to more energy transfer caused by more tissue displacement of the target due to the wider mushroom, and with the bullet then splitting again at a second throughbore of said pair of throughbores so as to further widen the mushroom for even more shock and damage to the internal organs of the target causing a quicker kill by virtue of the bullet expanding and peeling back to nearly inside out.

    Abstract: Provided is an automated case cutting device that may be remotely controlled to rotate and cut an outer case of an object. It can be applied to the disassembly and disposal, testing, or inspection of munitions. In one application, the device cradles a generally cylindrical munition of a length much greater than its diameter on two rollers attached to a bed or plate comprising a support frame. One of the rollers is rotated by a transmission mechanism powered by an electrical motor, while the other roller may also be turned by the same transmission mechanism via a sprocket and chain set. The munition may be further held in place by one or a set of holding rollers attached to a frame hinged to the support frame, so that the holding roller(s) swing onto the top of the munition after the munition is placed on the cradling rollers. The holding roller(s) may also be turned via a second sprocket and chain set, driven off the same drive shaft as the first roller.

The fluid contained in the container (47) can thus escape and spread over the target even in such a case.

In one embodiment, the method comprises coating the bullet of a cartridge with at least one coating material whose surface appearance contrasts with the surface appearance of the underlying bullet material. Characters are then selectively etched in, and generally substantially through, the coating, such as molybdenum disulfide. The characters are easily and quickly recognized because of the contrast between the surface appearances of the coating and that of the underlying material. The characters typically, but not necessarily, indicate characteristics of the bullet, such as bullet weight and design features.

    Abstract: The inventive device includes a box-shaped steel shell and rigid polyurethane foam which partially occupies the shell's interior so as to leave a compartment to be used for situation of a suspected explosive object. Some inventive embodiments include a polyethylene liner for foam wear protection, and/or a high-strength layer for attenuating explosive fragmentation. Foam bodies are carefully packed inside the compartment for separating the suspected explosive device from the doored entrance and for stabilizing the suspected explosive object during transit. Upon detonation, the foam pulverizes and the shell inelastically deforms into an ovaloid or cylindroid shape. The shell's edges and corners are convexly contoured for thwarting localized strain concentrations in the shell.

    Abstract: The inventive environment sensor apparatus includes an electrostatic sensor carried by the projectile. The electrostatic sensor has first and second electrical conducting areas separated by a dielectric material to form two plates of a capacitor. The first electrical conducting area is conductively connected to a current-to-voltage converter and the second electrical conducting area is conductively connected to the outside projectile body surface. A time changing electric field surrounding the projectile causes a time changing current to flow within the electrostatic sensor, which is converted to a time changing voltage by the current-to-voltage converter. A threshold detector device is conductively connected to an output of the current-to-voltage converter and provides a voltage signal to the safe and arm mechanism when the time changing voltage signal from the current-to-voltage converter exceeds a predetermined level, to indicate that a change has occurred in the sensed muzzle exit environment.
