Abstract: Dry process for the production of inorganic granular substances coated with plastics, characterized in that a radical-polymerizable vinylic monomer carried on the surface of an inorganic granular substance is brought in a gaseous phase into contact with gaseous sulfur dioxide to effect polymerization of the monomer. The resulting plastic-coated inorganic substances are useful in various fields of industry, for example, as fillers, construction materials, molding materials, electrode materials, delayed-action fertilizers, etc.
Abstract: A method for the production of a fiber-reinforced resin compound. The method comprises spraying onto a suitable substrate from three respectively different nozzles:1. an unsaturated polyester resin composition having a viscosity of about 3000 to 15000 Cps at 25.degree.C;2. a fiber-reinforcing material and3. a thickening agent of magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide, calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide or beryllium oxide suspended in a liquid polyester resin or a mixture of a liquid polyester resin and styrene, the weight of (1):(2):(3) being 100:20-55:3-30. The individual streams of (1), (2) and (3) intersect one another after exiting from said nozzles and prior to contacting said substrate to form one stream. The method can give a fiber reinforced resin compound having a strength equivalent to or more that of (sheet molding compound) and is simple in operation and can be carried out at a cost equivalent to or less than that bulk molding compound.
Abstract: A pre-coated metal sheet is prepared by coating a metal sheet with an acrylic resin comprising a dispersion of a granular rubbery material in an acrylic-based resin matrix which acrylic-based resin matrix contains monomer units having functional groups which cross-link upon heating.
Abstract: Particles of metallic sodium or potassium are placed on a wood substrate which has been pre-heated. When the wood substrate is introduced subsequently into a steam zone the sodium or potassium, as the case may be, reacts exothermally with the water vapor, melts and burns, charring the wood in localized regions. The particles of sodium or potassium are confined by grains of sand which are subsequently brushed away with any loose charcoal to produce a distressed surface to the wood.
Abstract: Surfaces of roads, bridges, floors, etc., are easily paved by using a mixture of at least one of granular, powdery and flaky asphalt material and a suitable paving aggregate and applying heat and press thereto at the working site.
Abstract: Acrylic fibers coated with one or more manganese oxides; the use thereof to remove trace materials from liquids such as water; a method of preparation thereof which comprises soaking the fiber in alkali metal permanganate; and another method of preparation which comprises soaking the fiber in sequence in an alkali metal base, in manganese salt solution, and in an alkali metal base.
Abstract: Durable, solvent resistant coatings are obtained by applying an aqueous composition containing the reaction product of a polyfunctional epoxide with a secondary amine or a dialkanolamine to a metal substrate and heating the resultant coated article to a temperature of 200.degree.C to 300.degree.C. in the absence of a curing agent. The aqueous composition contains substantially no unreacted epoxide radicals.
Abstract: Suitable glass-ceramic base compositions, including some siicates, aluminosilicates, lithium aluminosilicates, and boroaluminates, are modified by the addition of suitable quantities of transition metal oxides prior to melting and forming into thermallycrystallizable glass articles. Appropriate crystallization and post-crystallization heat treatments are thereafter employed to cause crystallization of the articles and the formation and growth of films thereon, which films are characterized by the presence of transition metal compounds of spinel structure therein. Such films demonstrate useful electrical, magnetic, catalytic and/or light-absorptive properties.
Abstract: In a process for preparing tissue for microscopic examination which process includes the steps of fixing a specimen of tissue, dehydrating the fixed specimen, clearing the dehydrated specimen, and impregnating the cleared specimen with paraffin, ultrasonic energy is applied to the specimen in each of the processing steps to reduce the total preparation time. Also, the time required to stain a specimen of tissue is reduced when ultrasonic energy is applied to the specimen while immersed in the stain.
Abstract: Acidic aqueous coating compositions containing an organic coating-forming material form coatings on metallic surfaces which are immersed therein. The thickness or weight of the coating formed by the coating composition is a function of the time the metallic surface is immersed in the composition. The resulting coatings have adhesion properties thereby providing an adherent base to which other coatings, for example, paint primers and/or final finish paints can be applied.

Abstract: Coating a ceramic substrate on a second major surface while avoiding damage to a coating comprising a matured enamel frit previously applied to the first major surface. After coating one major surface with an enamel frit composition and maturing its frit component thereon, the substrate is oriented with its matured enamel frit coating facing downward and coated on its second major surface with one or more frit compositions that must be heated to an elevated temperature at which the previously matured frit coating would be prone to damage on contacting a solid member. This invention avoids such damage by supporting said matured frit on a gas bed in spaced relation to any solid member capable of demaging the enamel frit component during the portion of the heating and cooling cycle needed to mature the frit coating on the second major surface when the temperature of the substrate is elevated to a minimum temperature approaching that at which the previously matured frit would be prone to such damage.
Abstract: Phosphorus- and nitrogen-containing polymers, solubilized by hydroxymethylphosphonium salts and formaldehyde, were allowed to react with phenol, alkyl substituted phenols, or halogen substituted phenols which contain one or more hydrogens ortho or para to the phenolic hydroxyl group to (a) prepare flame-resistant polymers and (b) prepare flame-, glow-, wrinkle-, and shrink-resistant woven and knit textiles which contain 25% or more cellulosic fibers.

Abstract: Method and apparatus are described for applying a wax or plastic coating to phosphor grains to be added to explosives for tagging purposes. The coating is obtained by spraying from a nozzle a homogenous mixture of molten coating material and phosphor grains and permitting the droplets thus formed to solidify during free fall through a cooling medium such as air. The coated phosphors thus obtained when incorporated into an explosive render the mixture less sensitive to friction and impact than the corresponding mixture employing uncoated phosphors.
