  • Patent number: 5058281
Abstract: The grooved surface of an aberration-corrected holographic model grating is sensed by utilizing the sensing head of a scanning tunneling microscope. The sensing head is mechanically connected to a blazing type stylus for replicating the groove pattern of the holographic model on a ruled grating blank. A ruling engine causes the sensing head not only to scan the surface of the holographic grating model but also drive a blazing type ruling stylus or an equivalent type device in accordance with an error signal resulting from a departure of a sensing tip from the top of the holographic model groove as a function of tunneling current.

  • Patent number: 5058284
Abstract: By mounting a longitudinally extending blade with a mounting block for pivotal movement about an axis perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the blade, in combination with a distance measuring meter mounted to measuring engagement with the movable blade, a precision squareness measuring gauge assembly is achieved for providing highly accurate measurements of the angular relationship of one surface to a reference surface. In the preferred embodiment, the precision measuring gauge assembly also incorporates pivot limiting means for controlling the arcuate distance through which the blade is able to pivot. In this way, the entire arcuate travel distance of the blade is accurately measured and displayed on the meter, thereby providing a direct accurate measurement of any desired surfaces.

  • Patent number: 5058288
Abstract: The present invention pertains to a plumb bob device for determining the bed height of bulk material in a shaft furnace. The winding drum 1 for unwidning and rewinding a cable 5 or a chain with a plumb bob 6 suspended at its end is driven by a hydraulic motor 3. A displacement transducer 9 is driven by the shaft of the winding drum 1. The motor for driving the winding drum 1 is a so-called low-speed hydraulic motor 3. The displacement transducer 9 sends a signal associated with the actual measured depth to a pressure-proportional valve 10 directly, i.e., without an electrical control device. This valve presets a plumb bob holding pressure associated with the actual depth for the hydraulic motor 3.

  • Patent number: 5058286
Abstract: A measuring platform system is utilized to measure the extent of damaged or misaligned vehicle frames or bodies to expedite the repair thereof. The platform becomes the measuring datum plane from which all measurements as to the pre and post repair locus of a particular reference point on the vehicle are taken as to height above the datum plane and distance from a longitudinal centerline of the datum plane. Means are provided as a part of the platform system to raise the vehicle and move same to a position where the longitudinal vertical plane through the centerline of the vehicle intersects the centerline of the datum plane. A computer can be used as a part of the system.

  • Patent number: 5052119
Abstract: An angular micro-positioning system cable of readily accessing any angle within 360.degree. and thereafter precisely addressing an angular position within one ten-thousandth of a degree. The device is suitable for use in test equipment or any equipment requiring extremely precise angular positioning. The device includes a rotary motor which is mounted to a secondary frame which is pivotally mounted to a flexibly mounted main frame. The drive shaft of the rotary motor is biased in to engagement with the output wheel. A linear micro-positioner is mounted to the main frame and its drive shaft is coupled to the rotary motor frame to pivot same. The rotary motor is first rotated with the linear micro-positioner locked in place to provide coarse angle positioning. Thereafter, the drive shaft of the rotary motor is locked and the motor frame is pivoted by the linear micro-positioner which provides extremely fine angular adjustment.

  • Patent number: 5050308
Abstract: A tool guide temporarily attachable to vehicle body panels or other surfaces to provide a straight edge, and a contour sander for use in connection with a straight edge. The tool guide includes an elongated member having a longitudinal edge surface for guiding a work tool, and suction cups mounted on tongues extending laterally from the body of the tool guide. The tongues are angled in relation to the body, so that the tongues exert a cantilever force urging the tool guide against a surface when the tongues are secured against the suction cups. The contour sander includes a number of flat blades mounted side-by-side and each having a longitudinal edge for contacting a contoured work surface. A clamp holds the blades in parallel juxtaposition and selectively loosens the blades for conforming contact with the contour. Finger grips are formed at the ends of the blades, allowing the operator to raise or lower any particular blade and obtain a sharper or more accurate reproduction of contour if desired.
