  • Patent number: 7642005
Abstract: A battery pack includes a case having an inner space, a plurality of battery cells placed inside the case, and at least one spacer placed between the battery cells. A space is formed around a supporting portion of the spacer for the battery cells so as to allow heat generated by the battery cells to flow out of the case. The spacer supports the battery cells by line contact therewith. The spacer body is formed in the shape of an H beam or in the shape of a staircase.

  • Patent number: 7531260
Abstract: A solid oxide fuel cell component (12) comprises a plurality of solid oxide fuel cells (24) arranged in spaced apart relationship, and in electrical series, on a surface of the porous gas permeable support structure (16). Each solid oxide fuel cell (24) comprises a dense gas tight electrolyte member (28), a porous gas permeable first electrode (26) and a porous gas permeable second electrode (30). Each electrolyte (28) is arranged in contact with a corresponding one of the first electrodes (26), each second electrode (30) is arranged in contact with a corresponding one of the electrolytes (28). Each of the first electrodes (26) is arranged in contact with the surface of the support structure (16). The interconnectors (32), the peripheral seal layer (34) and the electrolytes (28) are arranged to encapsulate all of the first electrodes (26) except for the surfaces of the first electrodes (26) in contact with the surface of the support structure (16) to prevent leakage of reactant from the first electrodes (16).

  • Patent number: 7432017
Abstract: Electrochemical structures with a protective interlayer for prevention of deleterious reactions between an active metal electrode and polymer electrolytes, and methods for their fabrication. The structures may be incorporated in battery cells. The interlayer is capable of protecting an active metal anode and a polymer electrolyte from deleterious reaction with one another while providing a high level of ionic conductivity to enhance performance of a battery cell in which the structure is incorporated. The interlayer has a high ionic conductivity, at least 10?7 S/cm, generally at least 10?6 S/cm, and as high as 10?3 S/cm or higher. The interlayer may be composed, in whole or in part, of active metal nitrides, active metal phosphides or active metal halides. These materials may be applied preformed, or they may be formed in situ by conversion of applied precursors on contact with the active metal anode material.

  • Patent number: 7381487
Abstract: A method and apparatus for use with an oxidizer assembly of a fuel cell system in which the oxidizer assembly has an oxidizing unit for oxidizing anode exhaust gas containing electrolyte particulates and is adapted or conditioned so as to enable the electrolyte particulates to be removable from the assembly and to be removed from the assembly, and wherein the conditioning and removing occur with the oxidizing unit retained in the oxidizer assembly. The fuel cell system is also adapted so that such conditioning and removing occur with the oxidizing assembly retained in the fuel cell system.

  • Patent number: 7358005
Abstract: A fuel cell stack assembly includes at least a first fuel cell and a second fuel cell electrically coupled together such that at least one sealed passage extends between the first and second fuel cells. Each of the fuel cells includes at least one hollow manifold that includes a wall extending between a first end and a second end. Each wall defines a chamber therein, and includes at least one opening extending therethrough in flow communication with the chamber. The fuel cell stack assembly also includes at least one fuel cell isolation device coupled in flow communication with each fuel cell hollow manifold. The at least one fuel cell isolation device is variably positionable during fuel cell stack assembly operation for selectively stopping fluid flow through at least one of the fuel cells.

  • Patent number: 7358000
Abstract: A fuel cell stack is provided with an outlet side oxygen-containing gas communication hole. First and second oxygen-containing gas flow passage grooves are provided in the direction of the gravity while meandering in the horizontal direction on a surface of a first separator. The second oxygen-containing gas flow passage grooves communicate with the outlet side oxygen-containing gas communication hole via second oxygen-containing gas connecting flow passages. A porous water-absorbing tube, which is used to discharge water to the outside of the fuel cell stack in accordance with the capillary phenomenon and the difference in pressure of air, is provided for the outlet side oxygen-containing gas communication hole.
