  • Patent number: 8315133
Abstract: An optical-disc player having a reader and a controller. The reader derives out-of-band information from surface marks of an optical disc, where the controller controls operations of the reader based on the derived information. The controlled operations may involve the reading and rendering of embedded data of the optical disc. For example, a person writes the words “Spanish” and “widescreen” on the surface of a DVD with a marker and inserts the DVD in a DVD player. The DVD player scans the surface of the DVD and sends the resulting image data to an optical character recognition (OCR) module. The OCR module outputs a text file containing the words “Spanish” and “widescreen” to a controller (e.g., Microsoft HDi runtime). In response, the controller sets the playback language to Spanish and the screen format to widescreen.

  • Patent number: 8289818
Abstract: A magneto-optical transducer including a magnetic layer on a transparent, non-magnetic substrate is used to characterize the performance of a write head based on optically detected magnetization in the magnetic layer. The write head sample is held in contact with or near the magnetic layer, which is illuminated through the substrate with linearly polarized light. Magnetization in the write head produces a magnetization in the magnetic layer, which alters the polarization state in reflected light. The reflected light is analyzed and the intensity detected using an optical detector, such as one or more photo-detectors or a camera. The performance of the write head can then be characterized using the detected intensity.

  • Patent number: 8270256
Abstract: A thermally-assisted recording (TAR) disk drive uses a “wide-area” heater with “shingled” recording. In shingled recording, the write head pole tip is wider than the read head in the cross-track direction and writes magnetic transitions by making a plurality of consecutive circular paths that partially overlap. The non-overlapped portions of adjacent paths form the data tracks, which are thus narrower than the width of the write pole tip. The data tracks are grouped into annular bands and when data is to be rewritten, all of the data tracks in an annular band are also rewritten. The wide-area heater may be a waveguide with an output end that generates a heated area on the disk recording layer which is wider than the cross-track width of the write pole tip. It has been determined that the use of a wide-area heater with shingled recording does not result in any significant adjacent track erasure (ATE).
