    Abstract: An adhesive composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of film forming resin, filler and tackifying substances. The dispersion uses wood rosin and esterified rosin as tackifying substances and also includes diethylene glycol monobutyl ether. The compositions are specially formulated to avoid use of the more volatile organic solvents which are undesirable for flammability or health reasons. The compositions are particularly suitable for use as nonflammable floor laying adhesives by methods in which porous flooring material is laid onto the wet adhesive layer or non-porous flooring material is laid onto the "semi-dry" adhesive layer.

    Abstract: An improved method for preparing amino polyols is disclosed. The method is the Mannich condensation of phenol, formaldehyde and diethanolamine in a molar ratio of (1:1:1), and then alkoxylation with a mixture of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide in a weight ratio of about 5:95 to 20:80 to form an amino polyol of hydroxyl number 440 to 515.The method gives higher yields of aromatic amino polyols of lower viscosity than those of the comparative example.

    Abstract: A normally liquid, stable polymer/polyol composition which imparts improved combustion resistance to polyurethane foams prepared therefrom while retaining satisfactory foam tensile properties are formed by polymerizing in the presence of a free radical catalyst and in the essential absence of an alkyl mercaptan, (1) from about 25 to about 60 weight percent of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer or monomers, for example, a mixture of acrylonitrile and styrene in a weight ratio respectively of 25:75 to 0:100, dissolved or dispersed in (2) from about 40 to about 75 weight percent of a polyol comprising a base polyol having a hydroxyl number of less than about 150, wherein the polymer is characterized by a crosslinking coefficient of less than 55 and an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.30.

    Abstract: Heat curable compositions, particularly solvent-based adhesive compositions suitable for use e.g. in flocking processes, are described and claimed. Known heat curable compositions require a relatively high temperature for cure. A one part non-toxic storage stable composition is provided which is cured by heat and comprises a polyurethane prepolymer formed from the reaction between a first NCO terminated prepolymer, an oxime blocking agent and a trifunctional primary amino compound used in a substantially stoichiometric amount to the amount of isocyanate groups of the first prepolymer available for reaction. The quantity of blocking agent is so chosen that statistically only one functional group of the triamine is reacted with the NCO groups of the first prepolymer available for reaction leaving two amine groups available for reaction with isocyanate groups of the prepolymer when they are unblocked by heating.

    Abstract: Polyurethanes are made by reacting a polyisocyanate with a compound containing at least two isocyanate-reactive hydrogen atoms having a molecular weight of from 400 to 10,000 in the presence of a catalyst containing tertiary amino groups. The required catalyst corresponds to the formula ##STR1## in which R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 represent a specified group or radical. A blowing agent and/or stabilizer and/or chain extending agent and/or other additives commonly used in the production of polyurethanes may optionally be included in the reaction mixture. The catalyst employed in the process is particularly advantageous in that it does not have a noticeable amine odor.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a method of improving the color of tall oil rosin comprising the sequential steps of (a) solvent refining the tall oil rosin by (i) partitioning the tall oil rosin between an immiscible solvent system containing at least one non-polar solvent and one polar solvent, (ii) separating the polar solvent phase from the non-polar solvent phase, (iii) adding additional polar solvent to the resulting non-polar solvent phase, (iv) separating the polar solvent phase from the non-polar solvent phase and (v) removing the non-polar solvent; and (b) distilling the residue. The resultant tall oil rosin is about five color grades lighter than the starting tall oil rosin. Both the improved tall oil rosin and the esters produced therefrom are useful in the manufacture of a variety of products, such as paper and textile sizes, plasticizers for polyolefin films, paints, varnishes, hot melt adhesives and pressure sensitive adhesives.

    Abstract: Phosphinic acid (also called hypophosphorous acid), when used in very small quantities, is disclosed to act as a catalyst to accelerate the reaction of rosin with an unsaturated dibasic acid to form a modified rosin for subsequent esterification with a polyhydric alcohol. According to the process of the invention, a rosin is reacted with an unsaturated dibasic acid such as maleic anhydride or fumaric acid in the presence of phosphinic acid at a temperature of from about 180.degree. C. to about 220.degree. C. When the modified rosin is subsequently esterified, the rosin ester exhibits improved color, softening point, and viscosity in a specified solution.
